Looking at an average of 16-17mph, back from travelling and not riding
for a few weeks. Come early for pastries and coffee.

I think I'm going to forgo espresso and scones at Ritual. I will join
the group on the way up Cortland at 6:40 or so.

Well, that was exciting. Nothing like flying through the air at 7 in the morning! As always, it's the landing that matters. Ow.

Trung, I'm so sorry for running you over. I hope your ribcage is ok. It sounded like it might be better off than my frame:

Oh, this sounds ugly; hope everyone is ok.

What craziness happened?

I'm sorry for crashing in front of you! I've got some bruises and a
sore shoulder, but otherwise feeling surprisingly well. All in all,
I'm doing much better than your frame. I didn't realize that the
damage to your frame was so bad until someone told me that it was
actually cracked. :(

Mostly me being stupid -- coming down San Bruno, I ran over a (series
of) potholes (while dodging other potholes, naturally), but made the
mistake of not release my brakes. So I went over my handlebars,
naturally. (Despite that, I felt good enough to continue the rest of
the way.) Peter had the misfortune of being behind me.... How exactly
I managed to do that to his frame I'm not sure. :(

Oh, that's the "valley of doom", I think. (The little channel of
slightly lower payment in a pretty broken up section of the descent
there.) If that's where you were, yeah, there's a lot of stuff going
on right there and it's pretty ugly, though if you can just manage to
hold the line down the center of that crazy part, it's not too bad.

Glad to hear that you shook it off.

If I saw it right, I think you hit a particular square of missing pavement that Friendly Road Workers decided to remove. It looked about 10 inches square or so, and deep enough to swallow a small dog.

I've seen dangerous bits of road marked with spray paint before - roots jutting out of bike paths etc - and perhaps that stretch could use a little highlighting. Especially with the darkness in the morning, it can be tough to stay safe through there.

I've got a good bike rental reserved for the weekend, so I'll be tackling the fondo, bloody shoulder and all. Be sure to ice your various impacted bits today, but be ready for it to hurt tomorrow...

Related: anyone know if it might be possible to get a replacement frame for my 2009 Felt F75? I'd grown quite fond of the red and would love to find a straight-up replacement part.

I'd take it to a local Felt dealer and see if they can squeeze out any warranty replacement deals.

and also, holy crap.  i heard there was a cracked headtube today, didn't think it was THAT bad.  also assumed it was carbon.  i mean we all saw the pic of Xtons busted ass Al CX rig, but c'mon, he's not exactly human.

I've gotten a crash replacement for my Felt frame from Sports Basement when I forgot my bike on my car roof rack and drove it into my garage.  Split my frame in half.  Frame was $2000 retail but $650 at crash replacement price.  I also got it covered with my renter's insurance (minus deductible).  Pete Lester at the Bryant store has contacts with the Felt dealer.

In the olden days (nineteen nineties) frames came with lifetime
warranties for that type of failure. In 2006 I warrantied a 1994
mid-level Kona with a cracked dropout, through a dealer, no questions
asked. I bet Felt will help you out.

The break appears to have happened right at the weld.  I asked a friend if a break at the weld is normal, and here's his response:

I believe a proper weld should end up stronger than the base metal because it usually ends up thicker than the base metal in that area anyway. However, the break probably happened right neeeeeear the weld and that metal has been weakened by the heating by welding. To take care of this, you will normally heat treat this area by tempering. Without tempering, the heated metal is usually more brittle.

Either way, a break at a weld is usually a defect.

Maybe someone else who has more expertise about welding and can jump in...

Would it be worth adding a 'hazards' page to SF2G web site under 'routes'? Seems like known hazards are taking a lot of victims in the last few weeks.

Only if one of the hazards can be angry guy with dog on the high voltage sprint ;-)

And +1 to Gar's friend. It would be very difficult for Felt to claim that's not a manufacturing defect.
