My team is having an offsite at the santa cruz boardwalk and I'd like to ride down. Does anybody know a gym or a pool or something where I could use the locker room and shower?

I can't point to something specific but I'm almost sure that there are showers at the surfing beaches. I don't think there are locker rooms if you need to leave your stuff.

Are you riding back? If not, shower in your chamois!

Probably not riding back. If I shower in my chammy, then it's sitting around wet in my pannier all day -> nasty.

Heads up on the beach showers, I've been to a beach a bit south of Santa Cruz a couple of times in the last two months that has turned theirs off due to the drought.  General search on the subject sort of confirms that state beaches turned them off last year, not sure if they've let up on the policy this year.

If you do use one do like the surfers, shower with your shorts, then change under a towel.

most of the showers that i think yvonne is talking about is to wash sand off of your clothes/swimming shorts.  and i think most of them are turned off because of the drought.

as far as what you are probably looking for, i would look for a camping site that has a fee shower like manresa beach.

or call the santa cruz 24 hour fitness and see if you can work something out.

Also I know for a fact that the campground at Henry Cowell Redwoods SP on 9 has coin operated showers. 25c will probably get you 4 mins or so...

Ibis has a shower. Ask Murphy for contact info. They might be cool with you using it.

I did a google search on municipal pools. I think the big one is this:
For $6, you can enter one time, swim (good for muscle recovery :) ), and shower.
(this is less hassle than dealing with 24 hour... even if you can get a free pass there, you will have to listen to a sell job etc... I went through that when I tried to get a free pass in NYC).

Also, I have just CC-ed Nils Tikkanen who works for Google and lives in Santa Cruz and will probably have good ideas for you.

there's a youth hostel ~downtown (assuming you're coming over 9 which dumps you on river st). not sure what their rate/policy for hourly usage is liek though.

Simpkins is probably a good bet, but it's quite a ways from the boardwalk.  Also, are you planning on storing your bike in someone's car while you're at the offsite?

Honestly, finding a full shower will be tough on that side of town.  You should just jump in the ocean for a quick (and shockingly refreshing) rinse off!

i have been at events @ the boardwalk where people have biked to it from sf or somewhere in the valley.

usually people just hang out in kit with their bike while they eat cheap carney food in their event space and don't really go on the rides.

peter is of course faster than the average man but even if he hustles it will probably take him until 1-2pm for the 80-90 mile bike ride.  2-3pm with shower which will be near the end of any day time corporate event @ the boardwalk.  so he probably isnt really planning on being to engaged in say riding the "giant" dipper which is a pretty tame roller coaster.

Also, Ted's idea is actually probably how I would go barring the Simpson's shower at the pool idea.  The action wipes are really great.  Even if you get cheaper huggies wipes, you can clean yourself decently enough to not feel totally gross and changes clothes and then not have to worry about kit that is wet with anything other than your sweat.

Now if I could just figure out the best place to shower when I go running at Berkeley without paying for general use of athletic facilities....

I have used the gym at UCSC.  This goes back a couple years, but for a very small fee they let you workout and use all the facilities (looks like its $7 these days).  Its at the top of the hill so once you're showered you pretty much roll down the hill sweat-free...that is unless you are on a cross bike and choose take what may be one of my favorite tracks ever down the hill.

You can't possibly mention that without specifying what track that might be!

sweetness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Np2V2Y3Ktg) is probably one of my favorite ways down from ucsc on any type of bike.

Bingo Peter Chang!
There's also mailboxes but that sends you a bit too far north.

the womens gym is what i used -- just trade some id for a lock and a towel. go for a run then return the lock and get your id back.

Taking a shower in the women's gym.... hmm..... I guess no real comment is necessary :).  (I'm guessing it's no longer segregated...)

I've snuck into the swim facility at the bottom of Centennial on my way back from Strawberry Canyon, but it's being used for summer camps, so that's a bit creepy if any of the kids were to go in, so it was a one-time experiment.

Pretty amazing to me there's not showers in the main buildings.

yes, it is co-ed.  there are pools on the 2nd floor but I've never been up there. If i remember correctly, I entered on the North side, west corner to go to the desk, dropped of an id -- i just used an old brown id, no one seemed to care. the mens locker room is on the ground floor, north east corner. this was 10 years ago so perhaps they tightened things up, but it seems like there were just students working the desk and they could care less.

oh, i think the proper name is 'Hearst Gymnasium for Women'. next to the tennis courts on bancroft on the berkeley campus. good location for running up strawberry canyon.
