Yet another terrible incident in SF.  Kudos to the sheriff's deputy who apparently resuscitated the cyclist.  One witness indicated they saw the car run a red light.

Though the bicyclist was wearing a helmet, Police Officer Grace Gatpandan said the man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with severe head trauma and was in life-threatening condition.

...yeah, newsflash guys, helmets don't help when you're being run over by a car. Jesus.

Nightmare scenario:

"Orozco said he witnessed the vehicle blow through a red light and strike the bicyclist as the bicyclist waited for the light to turn green."

I ride this area every day. It was noon - there were certainly plenty of witnesses.

It will be interesting to see how this is handled by the DA. I really hope it's not just another "oopsies, accident, what're yah gonna do". But sadly, history tells us that is more than likely.

So if this is negligence on the part of the driver. Will we see any charges? Stay tuned.

So do I

"Orozco said he witnessed the vehicle blow through a red light and strike the bicyclist as the bicyclist waited for the light to turn green.”

I am confused by this statement; Was the cyclist trying to turn left (from 14th to Folsom) and the car went straight (on 14th)? I only ever go straight on 14th but the corner is always dodgy as many cars are turning right and there are cars entering the roadway from the parking lot on the right (Smart and Final?).

The sfgate says the car was going northbound on Folsom and the cyclist was eastbound on 14th, one of the witnesses said he was turning left onto Folsom from 14th.

I'm wondering if the cyclist was jumping the light a little - EB 14th has a red + walk sign for about 15s while WB 14th makes turns (Folsom is where 14th goes 2-way again). Not that that behavior in any way excuses the driver. Just trying to figure out how the rider might be in the intersection from 14th without there being a lot of cars also in the intersection.

Northbound on Folsom at 14th is one of the few places in SF where I've seen regular blatant red light running.  I don't know why.  I see a few stop sign runners at best buy, but not red lights, except for that intersection.

eh, it might be one of the few places that "has a bike lane" where people blatantly run red lights.

people are constantly running red lights all over hayes valley which doesnt really have any bike lanes (class 2 like folsom).  last night was yet another perfect example.  was standing outside of rich table talking to friends when someone ran a red light at very high speed and there was a pretty bad car on car accident (two probably totaled cars, etc, etc).  back when i lived over there i would pretty regularly hear bad accidents from people running lights late at night.

was spending a lot of time thinking about how to slow down cars in sf last night.

I was chatting with Noah B at a fundraiser recently and I stressed the need for this as a priority (slowing down traffic).  My point is peak traffic speed is a relatively minor factor in total trip time.  The correlation may even be negative since higher speed = more traffic turbulence.  This really is the #1 factor in approaching Vision Zero, not infrastructure or anything else, although the mayor already proved at Polk he doesn't support it (there's no "balance" in "zero").

Unfortunately I've been seeing it a lot in the east bay and have been taking green lights with much more caution. There are no guarantees.
I just don't get people who do this shit.

Hopefully there will be a strong effort to talk to witnesses and figure out exactly what happened. I hate saying it, but it wouldn't surprise me if nothing comes of it.
Really sad.

Better than slowing down cars would be to actually have some standards when issuing drivers licenses.

People generally have stopped slowing for the stop signs on Frederick between Stanyan and Masonic, over by me. It's a little frightening, but the SFPD could care less.

I'm not sure if it's Waze routing harried commuters through these two lane streets, lack of enforcement overall, both, or something else altogether.
