Why we always instantiate driver with Web Driver class

Why we always instantiate driver with WebDriver classand not with the concrete implementation of respective browsers like 

Why

WebDriver driver  = new FirefoxDriver()

and not like this 

FirefoxDriver driver = new FirefoxDriver();
