what PageFactory.initElements(driver,this) does ???

It's written everywhere that it initializes the WebElements. what exactly this means ? 

Is this to replace driver.findelement(By.id("xyz")); by @FindBy(id="xyz") private WebElement ele; as a result of we get the methods of WebElement interface ?

Both places we need to initialize the WebDriver instance right. Can someone clarify the doubt ?
