Welcome to all our GSoC students!

We have compiled a list with some general guidelines on commonly asked questions in our GSoC page here: http://gsoc2015.scrapinghub.com/guidelines/

Please read them and feel free to ask us any further questions you may have.

We're looking forward to be working with you, let's make this Summer of Code great!

Thank you for posting these guidelines; the links to templates/expectations and last year's accepted proposal will surely come in handy!

Python has updated their application template for this year, here's the link: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/ApplicationTemplate2015

I updated the link in our guidelines page as well here: http://gsoc2015.scrapinghub.com/guidelines/.

They've extended some descriptions with more details, but otherwise it's exactly the same template as last year.
Make sure to check it because it lists all the requirements for student applications.

Hi Julia,

I am GSoC 2015 aspirant. I have basic knowledge of python. I am working on Scrapy project "Simplified Scrapy add-ons". I have past experience in web crawling and I am familiar with some crawling libraries and tools like Scrapy, BeautifulSoap.
After understanding the description "https://github.com/scrapy/scrapy/blob/master/sep/sep-021.rst" (given by a user on IRC) and getting an overview of "http://doc.scrapy.org/en/latest/topics/extensions.html", I found that i am good for this project.
I am about to prepare a proposal for it. What is the preferred medium and timings to discuss more on this project.
Also please point me to some suitable issues for beginner.

Looking forward to utilize my skills by contributing to the organization.

Hello,
I'm Naveen Kumar, an Information Science student from Bangalore, India.
I looked at the work being done as part of scrappy-portia and I was Intrigued. I also looked at the ideas page for GSoC 2016.
I'd like to be a part of the community/team behind it and contribute to the open-source software.
As for me, I've been using Python from the past 6 months, and I've built a Blog (following the footsteps of Miguel Grinberg) using Flask with additional features such as a Music Player.
As for any scrapping experience, I don't have any, other than those times I dug through the HTML source code of the website to get what I was looking for.
Again, I'd love to contribute to the open source software community and I'd like to be guided on how to go about it.
Thanks,
Naveen.

Hi Naveen, we're glad you want to help.  You should try Portia out and join the mailing list and say hi and start out there by asking questions.
