Spacetime has emerged from Einstein's 1905 (false) light postulate - it can have no other origin:

http://community.bowdoin.edu/news/2015/04/professor-baumgarte-describes-100-years-of-gravity/
"Special relativity is based on the observation that the speed of light is always the same, independently of who measures it, or how fast the source of the light is moving with respect to the observer. Einstein demonstrated that as an immediate consequence, space and time can no longer be independent, but should rather be considered a new joint entity called "spacetime."

Yet insane Einsteinians are trying to recover spacetime from other premises (different from Einstein's 1905 postulates):

http://fqxi.org/community/articles/display/213
"The question of whether one can recover spacetime itself from the ideas of quantum mechanics, thereby understanding how all our classical notions arise from quantum theory, is a fascinating one."

https://workshops.aei.mpg.de/emergentqg/
"Emergent Space-time in Quantum Gravity and Fundamental Cosmology [...] More precisely, the focus of the workshop will be the notion of space-time as an emergent entity in quantum gravity..."

Trying to recover spacetime from other premises, e.g. from "the ideas of quantum mechanics", is just as insane as trying to recover it from the ideas of linguistics or archaeology. Einstein's spacetime should be discarded altogether - it is an absurd consequence of Einstein's 1905 false constant-speed-of-light postulate:

https://edge.org/response-detail/25477
What scientific idea is ready for retirement? Steve Giddings: "Spacetime. Physics has always been regarded as playing out on an underlying stage of space and time. Special relativity joined these into spacetime... [...] The apparent need to retire classical spacetime as a fundamental concept is profound..."

Spacetime is an idiotic concept that is strangling physics, all Einsteinians know that, and since it is a consequence of Einstein's 1905 constant-speed-of-light postulate, the idiocy can only come from the falsehood of the postulate. So the idea of an "emergent spacetime", a spacetime derivable from premises different from the original ones, is just camouflage that has been preserving the false postulate and Einstein's relativity as a whole for a long time. One cannot criticize the emergent spacetime idea because it is not even wrong. One feels that it is impossible to derive spacetime from premises different from the original ones, but one is unable to prove that (likewise, one is unable to prove that a tiger cannot give birth to a giraffe). So Nima Arkani-Hamed, Sean Carroll and all other profiteers will continue to make career and money by promising that some day spacetime will be deduced from something else, not from Einstein's 1905 false constant-speed-of-light postulate:

http://www.raumzeitmaterie.de/veranstaltungen.php?evt=select&sqn=9750
Nima Arkani-Hamed: "The union of quantum mechanics and gravity strongly suggests that "space-time is doomed", and there are related indications of fundamental limitations to quantum mechanics in both the early and late universe. In this talk I will review these paradoxes and describe indications for a new picture where space-time and quantum mechanics will be seen to emerge hand-in-hand from more primitive principles..."

You keep mixing up the constancy of the speed of light IN A VACUUM
with the speed of light in media.

Quit it.

Spacetime is an idiotic concept primarily because, as Karl Popper pointed out in "Conjectures and Refutations", it is a block universe in which nothing happens. Nothing happens in it because a time dimension makes motion impossible. The idea that there is a time dimension in which we are moving in one direction or another is a conceptual disaster that has retarded progress in physics by at least a century. Spacetime physics is a religion created by cretins for cretins.

"At the same time I realized that such myths may be developed, and become testable; that historically speaking all — or very nearly all — scientific theories originate from myths, and that a myth may contain important anticipations of scientific theories. Examples are Empedocles' theory of evolution by trial and error, or Parmenides' myth of the unchanging block universe in which nothing ever happens and which, if we add another dimension, becomes Einstein's block universe (in which, too, nothing ever happens, since everything is, four-dimensionally speaking, determined and laid down from the beginning)." 21st century frontiers in Einstein schizophrenic world: Einstein's spacetime is doomed and has to be replaced by something else:

Nima Arkani-Hamed (33:02): "21st Century Frontiers: Spacetime is doomed and has to be replaced by something else."

https://www.edge.org/response-detail/26563
Nobel Laureate David Gross observed, "Everyone in string theory is convinced...that spacetime is doomed. But we don't know what it's replaced by."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U47kyV4TMnE
Nima Arkani-Hamed (06:09): "Almost all of us believe that space-time doesn't really exist, space-time is doomed and has to be replaced by some more primitive building blocks."

https://edge.org/response-detail/25477
What scientific idea is ready for retirement? Steve Giddings: "Spacetime. Physics has always been regarded as playing out on an underlying stage of space and time. Special relativity joined these into spacetime... [...] The apparent need to retire classical spacetime as a fundamental concept is profound..." x

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20727721.200-rethinking-einstein-the-end-of-spacetime.html
"Rethinking Einstein: The end of space-time [...] The stumbling block lies with their conflicting views of space and time. As seen by quantum theory, space and time are a static backdrop against which particles move. In Einstein's theories, by contrast, not only are space and time inextricably linked, but the resulting space-time is moulded by the bodies within it. [...] Something has to give in this tussle between general relativity and quantum mechanics, and the smart money says that it's relativity that will be the loser."

So the consequence, spacetime, is wrong and has to be discarded, but Einsteinians will keep on worshiping the underlying premise, Einstein's 1905 false constant-speed-of-light postulate:

http://community.bowdoin.edu/news/2015/04/professor-baumgarte-describes-100-years-of-gravity/
"Special relativity is based on the observation that the speed of light is always the same, independently of who measures it, or how fast the source of the light is moving with respect to the observer. Einstein demonstrated that as an immediate consequence, space and time can no longer be independent, but should rather be considered a new joint entity called "spacetime." x
