surface area of rock material

Is any one aware of literature in which the surface areas of irregular
shaped materials (pit walls waste rock) is more or less accurately
calculated and shows a workable and realistic field method which isn't
based on assumptions (eg. Morin & Hutt).
I know that BET can be applied on materials with small grainsizes,
however I looking for something on a larger scale.
