Hi,

I am an instructor at a small private school. A few of my
students are researching ancient architecture. Two have decided to do
the sphinx. Recently, I have heard of a debate raging over the age of
the sphinx and the possibility of it being a pre-egyptian structure. Can
anyone suggest some good resources for information?
Thank You
Jason Bledsoe

If you call KMT Communications, publisher of the excellent KMT magazine
you can have them send you the back issues in which Schoch, the proponent
of an earlier date, and Lehner, the "establishment opposition" argue the
case.

KMT Communications is at 1531 Golden Gate Ave, San Francisco, ISTR, but one
of the editors, Greg Reeder, is a regular visitor to this group so he should
be able to help you.

Dear Jake,
You want to start with KMT vol.5 no. 3, Fall 1994 where you will find
much info on the Sphinx debate. KMT Homepage is at
http://www.sirius.com/~reeder/kmt.html
Thankyou James Petts for the kind words. Look for an announcement this
week for KMT's in-depth review "ONLINE" of David Rohl's "Test of Time".

Below are two previous posts to sci.archaeology which provided a fairly
detailed bibliography of the material availble on the Sphinx debate.

Judith Paulson wrote the following list:

[Begin Judith Paulson post]

BOOKS

BAUVAL, Robert and Gilbert, Adrian. "The Orion Mystery." New York: Crown,
1994. [$24 hardcover LENGTH: 325 pp. (236 text and guest appearance by
Rudolph Gatenbrink, 7 appendices, notes, bibliography, index, 16 b&w
photographs, numerous drawings]

Hancock, Graham. "Fingerprints of the Gods." New York: Crown, 1995.

SCHWALLER De LUBICZ, RA. "Le Temple de l'Homme, 3 volumes." (The Temple of
Man) English version translated by Robert and Deborah Lawlor. Autumn
Books. ["This is the cardinal work to which all the others lead or refer.
Though not intended for specialists, the sheer complexity and magnitude of
the work makes it accessible only to those willing to devote the necessary
time and effort to it." He agrees with Lockyear that the Ptolomaic temple
is built on the remains of older temples.]

WEST, John Anthony. "Serpent in the Sky: The High Wisdom of Ancient
Egypt." NY: Harper and Row, 1979 [paperback book based on the theories of
Schwaller De Lubicz, $18]

I replied giving Judith some additional references:

Several references bearing on the Sphinx controversy which are missing
from your list are:

Schoch, R. M. and J. A. West, 1991. Redating the Great Sphinx of Giza,

As well as the KMT articles, I'd recommend the article by Gauri et al.
(1995). It's a summary and discussion by geologists who have been working
on the Giza Plateau for years.

How can a structure located in an Egypt that has supported the same
inhabitants since the paleolithic be pre-Egyptian?
