I hope this counts as an interesting example for opening up an institution of learning and fits on this list. Opening up the Media Lab.

Hi Everyone,

We are trying something new. Each year, hundreds of people apply to the Lab, but only a very small number can ever visit in person (and even fewer end up getting accepted). We want to create new ways to open up the Media Lab, so that people get a sense of who we are and what we do, and so we can meet new possible students or collaborators.

This project is driven by students, for students. But we would love your help getting the word out. Feel free to forward this message, point people to the registration page, or tweet about it. The event will go live here - http://unhangout.media.mit.edu/event/medialab

Here is the official announcement:

Join the first Media Lab Virtual Visit - Talk with current students and learn about our research

On March 28, join 10 Media Lab students to learn more about their work and the different research groups with which they are affiliated.

What happens on March 28th? After a short welcome, we will break out into small group conversations - where participants can ask questions and share ideas. Each conversation is hosted by a current MIT Media Lab student, who will talk about their research, the philosophy of the groups with which they are affiliated, and what goes on at the Lab in general.

The event will be hosted on the Unhangout platform, a new way of conducting large online conversations that was developed at the Media Lab. To prepare for the event, have a look at the How-To Unhangout instructions, https://unhangout.media.mit.edu/how-to-unhangout/ and make sure your computer fulfills the basic requirement.

Sign up for reminders about the event and get ready to Un-Hangout!

Thanks,

Srishti
