would it be feasible (this is meant to imply easy to implement) to have the 

build bot add a comment ("starting build of commit ABCDEF") to a pull request when it starts the build?

that way we can allow updates to requests up until the build has actually started

Yes.  That's pretty simple to do.

I can also detect changes and rebuild, I think.   Mucking with rest apis is sometimes a crap shot, but I think I know the appropriate evocation now.
