We're thinking of spending some time re-designing our download page.
The gist of it is that feedback from Typesafe professionnal services
brought back the overwhelming assessment that users of the Scala IDE
do not use Eclipse at all, and they never have. So, update-sites,
bundles, etc ... are extremely confusing to them.

The following document outlines my thinking about the plan of attack:

Don't hesitate to chime in, comment here, or help out !

Have a look at what Dart does with Dart Editor. They rebrand and simplify Eclipse significantly.

I realize we don't have Google's resources, but it would be great to simplify the experience.
We already have the bundled version, right? Maybe that should be the default download.

Yeah, making a bundle the default is definitely a priority.

As far as download pages go, this has been suggested as a static alternative:

I have to admit, I too get confused about all the different update sites and
combinations of plug-ins that we offer... there are just too many dimensions to
choose from: Scala version, Scala IDE version, Eclipse version, Bundle or
Update Site. Neither Spring Tools nor Dart does have these many variations.

It just occurred to me that online shops have a similar problem. For example,
take a look at Zalando here: http://www.zalando.ch/sports-herren/

There are lots of variables, like the brand, color, size, activity. Maybe we
could adapt something similar. A landing page for newcomers, similar to the
STS, which just lets you download the bundle for your operating system, and
then an advanced page which gives you all the options and lets you filter them.

Cheers

Mirko
