Hi,

there have been many queries about the symbolic expressions project,
which I didn't have time to respond to in the past weeks. Here are logs
from an IRC conversation

<burcin> the symbolic expressions project is a continuation of last years GSoC project by Titus Nicolae
<burcin> you can find his code here: https://bitbucket.org/titusnicolae/pynac-tn
<burcin> the goal is to write wrappers for MPIR, MPFR, etc. in pynac
<burcin> it is C++ programming, the infrastructure is all there.. but
there is still a lot of work to be done
<burcin> pynac involves a lot of Python C-API magic
<burcin> getting into it takes a lot of time
<burcin> this would mean a big commitment also in the warm up period, because I'd expect you to be able to start the real project during the GSoC coding period
<burcin> a good first step would be to get titus' code running in Sage
<burcin> feel free to use an older version of Sage, IIRC, titus used 5.2

Does this makes sense to anybody? I'd be happy to answer questions. I'll try to be quick but I'll have limited internet access over the weekend.

Cheers,
Burcin

Why use an old version??

just to  become familiar with the sage environment

Setting up a pynac development environment (with vanilla pynac code) is
the very first step before anyone starts playing with experimental pynac
versions. Instructions are here:

http://hg.pynac.org/pynac/wiki/get_involved

Reading the Sage developer guide, especially this section might help
understand how pieces of the Pynac-Sage are linked together:

As you know very well, Pynac and Sage versions are tied very closely
together. Even if the bug fixes that went into pynac in the mean time
are very simple, I don't expect anybody to try to merge
Titus' (extensive) changes with these recent fixes in Pynac, just to
experiment with Titus' code.

Cheers,
Burcin
