The first new alert of 2018 - Happy New Year everyone!

PECTORAL SANDPIPER - a single bird has been found and photographed this morning at Houtriver Dam about 30km west of Polokwane (Limpopo) at -23.786, 29.231 - reported by Jody De Bruyn.

CASPIAN PLOVER - at least a couple of birds found today at Kliphoek Salt Pans in Velddrif (entry through Kuifkopvisvanger farm - www.kuifkop.co.za). The RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was also still present there today - reported by Jonathan Pepper.

PECTORAL SANDPIPER - a single bird was found and photographed this evening at Rooisand Nature Reserve next to Arabella (Western Cape) about 30m to the left of the hide - reported by Pieter Verster.

EURASIAN OYSTERCATCHER – a single bird was found at Mission Rocks in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (KZN) this afternoon at -28.271, 32.490 – reported by Werner van der Walt.

Just a quick note for any of the local Cape birders still planning on heading through to Rooisand Nature Reserve in the next few days (as out of town twitchers would probably not be all that interested in these)…

 

With all the additional eyes there today, several good provincial birds were also seen at the reserve including a GREAT WHITE EGRET near the car park this morning and a WESTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL (a different, more yellow, individual to the one at Betty’s Bay) and a SAND MARTIN out near the hide late this afternoon.

AFRICAN CRAKE - news has just filtered through of a bird seen and photographed this afternoon at George Sewage Works (Western Cape), a great record for the province - reported by Wessel Uys.
