This is the Southern African Rare Bird News Report issued at 20h00 on Thursday, 17 August 2017. Information has been gleaned from various websites, email groups as well as from individual observers who have passed on their sightings. This report cannot be taken as being totally comprehensive as it is based only on information made available at the time of writing. All bird sightings reported here are reported in good faith based on information as provided by the observers. Any inaccuracies are totally unintentional and the writer cannot be held liable for these. For those who may have only joined the group recently and are interested in finding out what has been seen in the past, previous reports can be viewed at http://groups.google.co.za/group/sa-rarebirdnews

Starting in the Western Cape, a GOLIATH HERON was seen at a dam at Eselfontein in Ceres on Monday but had moved off again by Tuesday while the long-staying RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was still present earlier today at Kliphoek Salt Pans in Velddrif. Over on the eastern end of the province, both the GREAT SPOTTED CUCKOO and the WHITE-BROWED SCRUB ROBIN were also still on view earlier today at Reflections Eco-Reserve in Wilderness.

Moving up the coast into Kwazulu Natal, a single LESSER JACANA was picked up at Amatikulu Nature Reserve on Tuesday at the pan at the end of the 4x4 trail while 2 CUT-THROAT FINCHES were still present at Kumasinga hide in Mkuze Game Reserve on Tuesday as well.

In Gauteng, the SLATY EGRET was still present at Marievale Bird Sanctuary until at least late on Tuesday afternoon and was at the base of the first pylon and not the last pylon along the road as it had been previously. Another rather interesting record came late on Monday afternoon when a RED-CRESTED KORHAAN was reported visiting and calling in a garden in Brackenhurst, slightly south of where they normally occur. Nevertheless, what a cool garden bird to get in suburban Johannesburg!

In Mpumalanga, a single COLLARED PRATINCOLE was reported from Mkhombo Dam on Sunday at -25.134, 28.826 while the PURPLE-BANDED SUNBIRD was still present along the walkway at Skukuza Nursery in the Kruger National Park earlier today.

Up in Limpopo Province, yet another record of AFRICAN SKIMMER has come through, this time from in Tzaneen where 2 birds were seen together on Saturday at -23.820, 30.145.

And finally, in Botswana, the ROSS'S TURACO was seen again late yesterday afternoon in the Linyanti concession feeding in a sycamore fig tree, but was between 1 and 2 km west of where it had previously been reported from, so is obviously moving around a bit in the general area.

Thank you to all observers who have contributed their records. Please continue to send through any reports of odd birds as well as continued updates on the presence of rarities already previously reported, no matter how mundane you think they may be. Even if you think someone else has probably sent in a report, rather send the report yourself as well. The only way to improve this service and to make it as useful as possible to everyone is if it can be as comprehensive as possible.

Kind regards

Trevor
