Some friends and I are going to this, thought some of y'all might be interested too.

SAN ANTONIO – Astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a visiting professor at Oxford and Fellow of Mansfield College Oxford, will present Trinity University’s 2015 DeCoursey Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in Laurie Auditorium.

Burnell, a retired professional astronomer, takes interest in radio stars, which she discovered as a graduate student, and transient astronomical phenomena. She is one of the few senior-women in her field and is eager to see more women regard science as a suitable and exciting career for themselves.

Burnell has been named one of BBC’s 60 “New Elizabethans,” selected for actions that have had a significant impact during the reign of Elizabeth II. She is also regarded as one of the 100 most powerful women in Britain by BBC Women’s Hour. She has lectured in the United Kingdom, China, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and several other European countries.

In addition, Burnell has co-edited an anthology of poetry with an astronomical theme, “Dark Matter: Poems of Space.”

The lecture series is made possible by a gift from the late Gen. Elbert DeCoursey and Esther DeCoursey of San Antonio. The event is free and open to the public.
