Debi,

Leslie and Maggy and Joyce and Araceli were delightful.  They showed me the website that they constructed at one of your events.   At 10Bit they each designed a medallion on our software and then, hands on, they ran the laser to cut and etch the medallions from clear acrylic.   I’ve walked dozens of people through that exercise. I’ve gotta say, your 4 were the quickest learners, ever.  No hesitation, perfect pitch listeners, do it right the first time.  Laser cutting is 2D.  We also taught them a little bit of 3D.  Leslie bellied up to Onshape, a cloud based 3D CAD program, and designed a little box with holes in it.  Then we made the box on “Gramps".  Gramps is our workhorse, home-built, DIY, 3D-Printer. Incredibly it printed itself and then 3D Printed a son 3D Printer.  The son begat 3 grandchildren.  Hence “Gramps”, eh?
.

We can easily reprise the tour for you and the other members of your group who couldn’t make the April 8 event.  Suggest Saturday April 29?  I’m also available on practically any Tuesday evening starting at 6PM.

Thanks, Sacha. The girls actually had a tour today. I wasn't able to make it, but thank you to everyone who pitched in! Unfortunately, I got stuck with a tech meltdown at the Judson STEMFest. I had so hoped to be a part of the tour.

Hi Debi,

As I mentioned earlier, I don't really have the time to organize the kind of experience your team is hoping for.

However, I have found some folk who have the time and resources to help you with getting your girls a great experience at the 10Bit makerspace.

Don, James, Kevin, and Sue - please meet Debi Pfitzenmaier of youthcodejam.

Sacha,

First, congratulations to you and Mary.

Second, yes, I would be happy to host a group of girls on a Saturday.

Third, what hands-on activity would be appropriate?  We have three suggestions: (see attached 4 photos)
1. Kevin and Sue came up with an edge lighted acrylic project.  Laser cutting, soldering a simple circuit.
2. I have a photocube project.  Work with Photoshop, laser cut the inner cube, solve puzzle, cut out the flat pattern with a hydraulic press.
3. James has a toy car.  Assemble, decorate.

Depends on age, interest, time available.
Have the folks contact me.  We’ll work something out.

Hi Don,

I was recently approached by some folks looking to bring a group of girls who code to the space for a tour some Saturday (I think they are looking at June 6). After talking with them further, they explained that they were actually looking for some kind of hands on experience for the group (I think they have about two hours), not just a simple tour.

Normally I'd be delighted to help arrange something like this, but I have a newborn at home and I don't have the time or energy to create something this detailed. Do you know someone who might be interested in taking this on? Maybe someone already has a curriculum prepared, or something in mind?

Let me know, I can pass along contact info.
