Hello group. There are a couple of High School students eager to learn the game programming. They are interested in entering a challenge: ARK: Survival Evolved Modding Contest. The game engine to be used is the Unreal Engine 4. Anyone able to give them some direction? They would be able to come to the space on Wednesdays at about 7:00 pm. the students are Jonathan and Richard from Burbank high school. Please post if you can help.

I've just started looking into this (I play Ark, and I've got the DevKit) -- but most of it's really not "programming" from what I understand.  Most mods are just editing properties on existing items, or using existing items as a template.

It depends where you draw the line on what constitutes "programming."
These are high school level kids - most likely with very limited
"programming" experience who are less proficient in recognizing patterns
and parsing information. They will most likely need guidance in breaking
down tasks and understanding what can and cannot be changed && what is
reasonable.

Also, there's changing "AI Behavior Trees, structures, and all kinds of
gameplay classes & game logic" (http://www.playark.com/workshop/).

Sounds like a nice entry to CS / CT concepts & skills.
