Sidescroller

So, I've taken a look at getting started with a new game project.  The idea is for a hybrid of side-scrolling platformer and action RPG.  Does anyone here know of or have a basic example of a side-scrolling platformer engine I can use to study and build off of?

Ok that sounds like a good idea! sidescrollers are oldschool, but happy wheels is a great example of a good modern one
