I know that efforts to bring TechShop to Seattle seems to be futile so far, so I'm excited to let you know that there is a FabLab in Tacoma:

It seems it's fairly new.

Here's one of their latest promotion:
Hey everyone, check out the open houses that the FabLab is having:

I thought about it a great deal a few years ago, to the point of asking about a franchise, but nothing came of it.

The thing that seemed then, and I presume now, to make them different is a much larger class of machine - full size knee mills, engine lathes, things like that.   Something to that.

A real problem is location - if it's in, say, Renton, how many people from Ballard or Bothell or Kirkland will find it worthwhile to go there.
If it's in, say, Bothell, how many people from Kent/Renton etc will find it worthwhile.

So "who would be interested in a membership" will likely depend a little bit on "membership for a facility located where? "   U district will get a very different answer than Enumclaw.

Good luck.

Jeremy,

I might be missing the point, but it sounds like everything they would offer is already offered by one or more independent ventures, like our lovely venue Jigsaw Renaissance and their peers Metrix Create Space, Hazard Factory, Bikeworks, the thriving coworking scene, etc.  Or am I missing something Techshop offers that these places don't?

Hello Dorkbot.

Anybody have connections with UW or a company that might be interested in helping bring Techshop to Seattle?

Out of curiosity, has anybody been to one of their existing locations, or have any first hand experience with a Techshop they'd like to share?

Lastly, a quick show of hands (if you're so inclined, RTMO please) who would be willing to pre-purchase a 1 year membership at $1500 in order to get a Techshop built up here?

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for expressing interest in TechShop's expansion.  A TechShop franchise in Beaverton did open, but then closed a couple of years ago.  We learned through this failing that franchising does not work for the TechShop business model, and so now, all of our stores are company-owned.  This is working for us.  We are looking to re-open in the Portland area, and we're looking to open in Seattle for the first time.

To answer your question, Seattle is definitely on the horizon, and right now we're searching for the right opportunity to make it happen.  We are interested in making connections in Seattle.  With that being said, let me mention that we fund and launch our locations through relationships we build with companies, groups, investor groups, organizations, and educational institutions in the surrounding community who are interested in providing funding, guaranteeing bulk membership pledges for their employees/members/students, guaranteeing events/training contracts for their employees/members/students, and/or providing real estate options for our building location.  Do you have any personal connections to a company, group, investor group, organization, or educational institution that is interested in partnering with TechShop in one or more of these ways in order to bring TechShop to Seattle?  On a smaller scale, we may be looking for individual membership pledges and individual le
nders to support the opening of the shop.  Let me know how you would like to be involved.

Right now, we are focused on opening locations in Round Rock, TX (outside of Austin), Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, which are all cities where we have already formed a strong relationship with local companies/groups.  We look forward to looking into the next opportunity in Seattle that comes our way.

Thank you,

Sesame

Hi Jim,

I was very excited when I attended the meet and greet at the Shakees outside of Seattle a few years ago.  Then still kinda excited when it looked like there was a techshop opening in Beaverton, OR.

Now it looks like the PNW isn't even on the radar.  I heard your backers for the Seattle location fell through.  What's the latest on this?  Just looked over the techshop.ws<http://techshop.ws/> site, and either I'm missing it, or it's just not there.

Thanks!
Jeremy Calvert

It looks like they'll be officially opening on November 1st, but they don't mention a price yet. Makerhaus in Fremont should also be opening later this year.

Regarding a public CNC, the West Seattle Tool Library actually has a Desktop ShopBot. I teach a class on it about once a month: http://www.meetup.com/WSToolLibrary/events/86104682/

After taking a class, it's available for community use ($1/min of cutting time) whenever the tool library is open.
