Dear roConnect Users,

I want to formally apologize for not responding much to support
questions and group posts over the last couple of weeks. I have been
participating in a mobile app competition and it has taken all of my
time. In order to give some perspective on the roConnect project I'm
giving the following background. roConnect was started as a class
project during my graduate work at BYU for Information Systems. It
actually encompassed three classes, each class supported a different
component (The server, the Roku channel, and the Android app). Now 9
months later the project has become more than I ever thought possible
and has been able to help some setup video/audio streaming from their
computer to their Roku player. I admit that this product is more for
the technically minded as it is challenging to setup, much to my avail
at making setup and use simple and easy. All of roConnect's
development and support is handled by me, and no one else. It is a
side project that I try to monetize in order to further development
and try to create something everyone can use with ease. I appreciate
those who have been patient with me and worked through the setup
process. I also appreciate everyone's patience as I attempt to fix
bugs in the latest versions (2.0). I would continue to ask for your
support and patience as I find time to work on the project. I've
priced the channel at $0.99 because it isn't a product that is super
polished, but I have put in a considerable amount of time to make it
something elegant and functional. I'm sorry to all those who have
bought the channel and have been unsuccessful in getting roConnect to
work. In no way am I out to rip people off or steal money, that is
not who I am and not what this project is about. I'm looking to fix
the indexing issues currently experienced by users in version 2.0. I
will also be reviewing other issues to stabilize this release and free
it from whatever bugs it has. Please feel free to reply to this post
with specific and detailed bugs and I will do my best to address
them. I will look to push out updates as quickly as possible.
Version 2.0 comes with a update service that will inform you when new
updates are available. Thanks again for everyone's feedback and
support.

Saul,

Can you look at the Android App issue that it can't play any videos?
I started a thread Oct 9. Thanks. BTW, keep up the good work.

I only have 1 issue so far, and it's with indexing. I may have missed
the instructions out there or I didn't read something right. Every
time I index a tv series the Index only shows the title of the
series.

For instance. My directory structure is like this: F:\tv\corner gas
\season 1\Corner Gas s01e04 Oh Baby.m4v and etc up to 6 different
seasons. EVERY single episode is called "Corner Gas" in the Roku
Channel and they're not even broken out into seasons, so you never
actually know which episode you're playing. Maybe you could set up a
directory structure system or just code the channel to work similar to
the way XBMC displays and pulls the information. They base everything
off of TheTVDB.com and as long as your files are named properly it
pulls in all information, separates it by show, then by season, and
then by actual episode.

Or, maybe I'm just not naming my files properly for IMDB to pick them
up. Maybe someone could enlighten me as to how I need to rename my
files in order for them to show up correctly?

Also, please add transcoding and streaming of .avi files. Thanks :)

I appreciate your work on this project ... it has enabled me to cut
the cord from my cable provider :)

The bug I'm seeing is that the indexing process doesn't remove videos
that I've removed from the folder. They stay there when I view the
channel on the Roku.

PS: I'm using Chrome.

The only issue (not bug as much) is the inaccuracy of the IMDB
indexing ... it is a rare occasion when it finds the correct name for
the video. The match is often completely random, and occasionally
humorous :) I can understand the inaccuracy and the difficulty of the
regex that must be in that code, but I just wish if I manually edited
the information for the video, it wouldn't be overwritten the next
time I index. Can you add a flag that it is manually edited so I don't
want to overwrite it?

Thank you so much for your work! I love the tool.

Hi Saul,

I have noticed a couple problems with the new roconnect version. I
noticed that when I add a new movie that it reindexes all movies and
also doesn't erase old movies. It also breaks any playlists that were
created. I have to delete them and recreate them. The roku app works
good. The android application is broke and I found out why. The
android app wants the "http://192.168.1.X/" in the playlist xml but
the new server app doesn't do that. It creates relative links in the
xml starting with "roku/" instead which makes the android app give a
bad ip in xml error. only way I can think to fix this is to check the
user agent string and feed the roku tv device a different xml then the
android app.

Hope this helps with your troubleshooting.

Saul:

Thanks for the explanation. I really like roConnect, I think it's a
great app. I really encourage you to keep working on it.

It has growing pains, but I hope you will resolve them.

Please consider using some sort of version control and bugzilla or
something similar so that we can help you track bugs. Right now I
have 3 separate beheviors I'm seeing with roConnect and I can't track
them. AFAICT they are browser dependent, which would point to some
sort of ajax problem.... But I don't know enough to help. :-(

Have you thought about making it open source so others can help you?

Hi Saul'
One the issues with the Indexing was solved or at least a workaround
was created by one of the members. The resource Limits can be
manually changed in the PHP.ini file. I am not sure it was the
correct way to a solution, but has worked for me. Something to look
at to put in next update.

I like that this very much it simplified my home media network a lot. Is there a way that the channel can recognize images for the actual video and not just for a playlist. I have tried naming a jpeg the same as the video file example cowboys and aliens.mp4 and cowboys and aliens.jpg and put them in the same directory but it doesn't associate the two. Can you make that possible or if it already is explain how to do it?

Thanks for the great class project. I have not had one problem with this that wasn't caused by a lapse of thought.

when you want to insert the pictures click on edit search for the movie in the database, when you find it just click on it then save and the pic should be in there.

Are you referring the IMDb integration?

I just bought a Roku 2xs and am stuck trying to install RoConnect.  I have downloaded the software, but cannot open http://localhost/roku.  What should I do next.  Unfortunately, I am not a techie, I'm just a grandfather trying to get this Roku to work.

Ron,

Is WAMPSERVER running and online?

There should be a green W icon down on your windows status bar.

When you place your cursor over it, a status popup should say “WAMPSERVER – server Online”
