Dear Class,
Because I am late writing this question, it will be due on THURSDAY,
March 13
this week. Read the directions below carefully! The next question will
be due MONDAY before Novruz.

1) READ: the article by Rosina Lippi-Green.
2) CONSIDER: At the beginning of her study, she asks, "Is [the way bad
characters speak in Disney movies] part of how children learn to
assign values on the basis of variation in language linked to race,
ethnicity and homeland?" (p. 478) Her study is set up to explore this
question. Make sure you understand it!
3) ANALYZE: What is her conclusion? Is her study and conclusion
convincing to you? Use information from the article to support your
opinion.
4) CONNECT: Think of a popular movie you saw recently that had "good"
and "bad" characters. What were the ethnic/appearance/language traits
of good and bad characters? What traits were associated with "good"
and with "bad?" Does this portrayal reinforce/reflect unequal values
of difference in the power structures of our/your society or not?

Enjoy this interesting article! Read your classmates' ideas!

hello everybody
firsltly i want to touch to the topic of movies.we know that there
are a lot of movies.from childhood to these days we are still
interested in them.In childhood all of us saw "micky mouse","snow
white","pinocchio","bambi" and etc.In all of them were happy
endings. But at the same time there were "good" and "bad"side.Always
"good"side won.But for me "Aladdin" "the lion king"and others were
interesting.I think for children the movies which are more historical
are useful. They can learn something from them. For eg:"pocahontas"and
"Aladdin"In "aladdin" we can see the special arabic culture, life
style,costumes,and specific accents.Especially magilcal east.I think
it is very interesting to learn about oriental culture, and
traditions, and from "pocahontas"they can learn about the hindy
tribes. Each movie is interesting but for children for their learning
something the movies which have connections with reality they are very
useful. And intersting fact there language variety. In aladdin except
some people others speak with arabic accent. Some actors which came
from other countries to USA they also speak with accent. But
appropriate to the role which they have to make / they have to imitate
the language accents. It is also very interesting for children.
Animated films are entertaining children but at the same time
they are learning -learning about the specific cultures, life styles
societies, traditions, and language variations.Although in disney movies
we can see a lots of accents but at the same time we meet the lower
class and upper class accents.IN these moveis female characters are
working only at home, males have concrete jobs. They are influinsing to
childrens psychology..I am agree with that basic of variation in
language linked to race, ethnicity and homeland..Look at the "lion
King",setting is africa..There is African accent(homeland).In snow
white princess speaks US or British English. There is no rough
accents.Africans speak with accents(it's race),The conclusion is that
language variation influence on children.I think only useful movies
can help to childrens impruvement.
Recently i saw Pocohontas" there are bad characters and
"good"characters too.She is a hindy.She wore apptopriate to their
tribes---half bare.Has a long black hair and speaks with an
accent. But the english speak without any accent. The people from the
tribe are good.but some people from england are bad....In out country
also there is some districts in which people speaks with an accent. It
is not influence to the other places.it is only specific to that
place..But formal language is without any accents..

OLA MY DEARS!
From Rosina’s writing I understand that for children movies,
films play visual meaning, sometimes children really do not understand
the meanings of the films and they differentiate bad/good characters
according to their voice tone, appearance, speech.
In one hand we can say that all films for children have message
that author want to bring to children’s notice. If we look at Aladdin
we can see how producer describe the life in Aqraba with all beauty
and dangerous life, their traditions, culture. Even we can see here
Arabic rules; as we know in Arabia they punished robbers by cutting
their hands and when princess Jasmine walk in bazaar she saw how
little boy want to take an apple but he can not because he is little
and Jasmine give him apple without paying the money; angry seller want
to cut her hand because he thinks that she is a robber then Aladdin
help to escape and etc. This event can help for children understand
that stealing is a bad thing.
But in other hand I think sometimes English people used films,
movies as policy because in the most films main character speak in
good English, a lot of time that character is protagonists and as
Rosina pointed 49,9% constitute good characters and a lot of time good
gain victory over evil which means English wins.
Children’s mind is as white paper and that films can draw in
their mind any pictures which producer want and for each country it is
very important propagandize its culture, language, people, tradition,
ruling system and etc. Also in children’s mind producer easily can
create image of the good and bad language, country, tradition,
culture, rule with help of films as in Aladdin children thought that
all Arabic people was barbaric, uneducated, enemy and etc.
Disney film is school where children learn the rules of real
life. These films have educational points as children learn that they
must be honest, care/love/cherish respect to their family and etc.
E.g. from Aladdin stealing is bad thing, from Pete Pan friendship,
care between sister and brother, from Pinocchio never to tell a lie,
from Sleeping Beauty and Mermaid does not believe to strange man and
etc.
I want to speak about my own experience after watching Disney
films. When I was a little after watching Peter Pan every night I was
waiting that one night Peter will come and take me to Nederland where
he live in but of course after some years I was fed up from waiting
and understand that all that was just unreal dream. I thought that
old, ugly people (also people who do not have all teeth in their
mouth), and lame men are bad people as Captain Kook. For me black
people and the person who swear were bad as Pirates. I think that
crocodile (the most predatory animal in the world) is good. Why?
Because he eat Kook’s hand, but now all that was just ridiculous. Of
course that time I was under influence of the film but by the lapse of
time I wake up from dream.
The day before tomorrow I watch the film “Tansporter2” and I try
to analyze the film according to Rosina’s writing. In the film
protagonist Frank was a chafer of the little Jack, all good characters
speak with good English, antagonist and all people in his team speak
with accent and they were from different countries Russian, Spain,
African. Frank’s behaviour with Jack and his family (Mrs. Billings and
Mr. Billings) was very gentle, but bad character was very cruel, even
with child he behaves badly. At the end Frank save little Jack’s and
his families life and film end with somebody’s call to Frank, caller
need his help it means hero again went to help someone.
I analyzed that bad characters in most films do not have a
family, children they was lonely but good characters a lot of time
have family or beloved. As in this film also in Spiderman we can see
that heroes give their family life as sacrifice for people’s
happiness. For me it means that hero must be always free, family take
from people’s that freedom there for a lot of time heroes as Spiderman
and Frank do not get married. That is just my opinion…

THANK YOU

Hi dear teacher and dear friends! I wonder what is happened to you?
The page seems so empty. Surely you are waitting for the deadline,
like me always. Anyway...
Children open their eyes to world with empty and clean
brains. These brains like the white papers are going to be filled.
These papers are ready to be filled with any kind of informations from
the outside. And one of the sources is media and television. Children
as innocents are more flexible than adults to accept any kind of
interpretation without question. A lot of issues about life and people
come to their comprehension through animated movies. Little children
are in general very curious, and frequently ask a lot of questions and
most of the cases they find answers from inside of animated movies.
The characters; their visions, behaviours, speech, effect children and
play important role in their later life. Rosina Lippi-Green wants to
concentrate on the language and accents emerging in the movie. As
English was an alien language for us, we always watched Disney films
in translation, especially in Russian. So now I can not claim that I
witnessed the different varieties of English in Disney movies. But
from the vision I can say that there were discriminations among
different races (black people are mostly are placed as servants),
ethnic groups, genders etc. White people are always clever, beautiful,
and romantic.
The essay is more about children's encounter with these very
national varieties, but the television, media plays a considerable
role as authority in educating also an adult population all around the
world. Today the majority of world population get acquainted with
various ethnic groups through television and their attitudes are much
dependent of how they are presented.
We as the country which was nearly detached from the rest of
world during soviet period began to encounter ethnic varieties,
nationalities through the television. After the independence we came
to learn a lot of things from movies and I wouldn't like undergo such
misinterpretations. People's accepting a foreigner as a stereotype,
always creates problems, people in their first encounter with
foreigners can treat roughly for the false consideration about them.
Today in our life it exists and people suffer from its outcomes.
Few years ago a TV serial called "Hadi" (the name of main
character) was shown in one of our channels. The movie set in two
countries; in Brazil and in Arabia. But the filming and characters
belonged to Brazil country. The characters were divided, half of them
were Arabian, the other half Brazilian. Brazil actors and actresses
wearing Arabian dresses and pretending some characteristics of Arabian
culture tried to picture the Arabic life. This long TV serial was an
example of misinterpretation of Arabian culture. I don't know that
culture so closely but I know the only thing that it was much
exaggerated. Brazilian and Arabian cultures, values, ethics,
attitudes, beliefs are very different even they are controversy to
each other. I can not say that which one is better, because I know
that there is not a bad culture or ethnicity but it was clear for me
that Brazilian production misinterpreted and created a false Arabian
stereotype. Arabians in the vision of movie are described as much
ignorant, stupid people. They don't know anything of the life, they
just spend their days engaging with senseless issues. Besides of them
there was a merciless, cruel vision of Arabian people. Hence in the
movie Brazilians are humanistic but Arabians are destitute and cruel,
Brazilians are merciful but Arabians are merciless and so... In the
surface the movie is romantic and entertaining but if we look at the
deepest it is a collection of misinterpretations about other culture.
I'm sure that in the any country who know less about Arabian culture
and people will take this characterization as a stereotype. Such
approach misleads people and takes them away of the reality, and real
people, it is just false imitation.

hi, everybody
In this chapter Rosina Lippi-Green tries to explore the use of variation in language in animated films. Why Disney's animators use different accent in different characters of film? And what can be at the result?
We know that most children of the world learn about other nations from television programs and cartoons or films. These animated films reflect their background knowledge about other nations. In the story, "Three Little Pigs" a wolf tries to fool the pigs with wearing like the Jewish people, he wants to make pigs open the door. In story wolf spoke with a Yiddish accent. In other story, in "Aladdin" all events take place in Arabic kingdom. The theme in both stories ends with goods triumph over the evils. All good guys - Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and her father speak in US English, but other cruel Arab characters speak with foreign accents. As shown in article all bad characters speak with foreign accent, but good personalities have a good US or British English. The reason using of the accents in films maybe to make them more interesting, amusing and funny. At first, Rosina makes clear bad and good sides of variation in language, and the result of this process. At last she decides that it must be left in present position. Because the children learn from these animated film to be comfortable with same and to be careful about other and language is main and ready indicator for this separation what is approachable and what is best left alone. They learn from these films other nation's culture, beliefs and many other things. Every these films give the messages to children. What is good, what is bad.
I agree with, children must learn be more protective and watchful. Everyday by watching the films like these, they can learn it. And from it they can learn not to believe every one. But results also can be negative. The negative feelings, like racism can appear in children mind. Maybe these feelings can disappear in the future when the children will grow up.
The last film which I watch was "GHETTO". The events take place in German and period is World War 2. In the film the bad character is young German battalion commander. Though he was cruel man, he loves art, especially operatic art. He can play in different musical instruments. He falls in love with Xayya's voice. Xayya is the positive character of the film. She is operatic singer. She tries to save other Jews from death and she sing for German battalion commander. For a while she could save their life by help Jew officer. But his cruelties to Jews not end. Young battalion commander is German, W.W.2 Germans was characterized with their ruthless, cruel, vicious behaviors. But Jews in this film have shown as oppressed, helpless nation.

Hi class
In my oppinion the stereotypes influence children imajination by the
cartoons that they watch in TV.If we look at Freuds works we see he
point out that the early ideas of the children give suuficient ground
to their activity after childhood and relates with the formalisation
process.Because of that I think it the badly or negotively influence
children in their early years when they discover the world around
them and it seems that it depend to their atmosphere around them
wheather they form right or false decision.
In another hand I think that it is political power of the nation that
want form this ind of worldview in children brain that they must
accept one character is negative and we could say that about one
nation it is powerful way to acquire children from their early years
and this child when he or she grows up they take this as an attitude
of themselves and imajine that it is their own ideas bi=ut they are
not aware about the promqram that prepared for them by the
controller of their attitude -it just means that they are (the
controllers)prepare powerful weapn or alive weapon for their enemies
they just use the ways to influence or gain results and in the war
all ways are good.
For ex;we could say that they have powerful influential weapon as
Disneyland and through it they create such cartoons as Aladdin and
there they form positive characters as native english speakers
(americans)but negative characters english speakers with the accent
of arabs.I think it is crime against not only one nation (arabs)but
also against of all Muslim world.they just want show to future
generation WHO ARE THEIR ENEMIES.Also in response to this I can
examplifie the diagram in which the negative stereotypes are highly
or fully appears in cartoons by the narration of the arab or muslim
second language speakers.
I want say sometink to prove my ideas about that topic for example;
We see in works by Ferdinand Sausare that he points to the idea of
forming our thinking by the stories, tales, and in this example we could
say also cartoons and films music. He ask one question about that why
one nation are slightly different from another?and the answer was the
culture which forms the nation andd their own mentality -he said that
it is our myth which form our world view in early ages and from that
we learn what is good and what s evil.

Lippi-Green set out to decide whether variation in the language of
characters or stereotyping one way or another is how children learn to
assign values linked to ethnicity, race or homeland. Her conclusion is
that ''the value-assigning''happens mainly via television,movies-
entertainment industry. What children learn fromthe entertainment
industry is to be comfortable with same and to be wary about other,
and language is a prime and ready diagnostic for this division between
what is approachable and what is best alone. Also, she says stereotyping
is not utterly avoidable because it is arepresentation of human
condition and a focus of interest to art.
I agree with the conclusion .Children believe most of what
they see or hear and this can lead them to assign values to people in
movies. As they grow, they get rid of naiveness and begin to think
deeply about life.
Adults can see the negetive effects of this on children and try to
stop it.As in the article''The American Arab-Disctimination Committee
complained about some lines about carabs in ''ALADDIN'' film''.

First I want to say that this text is so interesting for me.As
we know there are a lot of cartoons in the world. Of course
their topics are different from eachother but one main
common structure is that "to enjoy" .Now days Walt Disney's
animators are famous in the world. In every society all
cartoons are appropriated for each society. For example "
Three little pigs" it is popular one. Jews show this as
owner cartoon characters wear as jewish and speakk jews
accent in which Wolf appears as jews. And also yiddish
dialect appear . Other characters in Disney's Aladdin
mythical Arabic kingdom . In the cartoons good guys
Aladdin , Princess ,Jasmine . They talk or speak like Americans
accent but foreign accent is bad .Now variation in language
connected with to race , ethnicity and homeland .Most of the
children in the world learn some main things fom television
and cartoons.Children aren't learn variation in language.
They learn what they see and hear. But for me main idea is
that native speaker and mother language play more important
role during childhood. Children 's races and national origins
feelings appear and this feelings effect them from bad side .
Based on this idea many actors necessarily bring to the
role own native language .A s we know language and accent is
impotant .There are o lot of dialect in the world and also
they are different from eachother . Let me look at female
and male characters :Female -nurses ,nannies, mother , aunt or
housekeepers.Male-doctors ,kings, detectives ,servants.Now our
children have clear division betveen sexes. And also children
learn that English speakers and native speakers are best and
good characters in the cartoon.
"The Lion King" -set in Alfrica .Language wouldn't be
english. But main characters speak American and British accent.
Other side in europen country the language of the four princes
( from Cinderella ,Snow White ,Sleeping Beauty and LIttle Mermaid)
are English language .Last time watched "Pacahantos" . It is the
best cartoons I have ever seen of course this cartoon has bad
side for axample there is war view may be it effect children
from bad side but Pacahantos is symbol of freedeom and peace.

Today's world became as a village, and the reason of this is the
development of technology. Rosina Lippi-Green discusses the points as
cartoons and movies which today became very popular. The language,
behaviors of the heroes in these movies directly affect the knowledge
of children. For instance the author gives example from Aladdin and
the good characters are from America others who speak strangely and
speak differently are from Arabia. This description makes children
think wrongly and the direction of their knowledge becomes wrong.
Briefly we can say that author by means of this article shows us that
TV channels and programs is the device which makes to get acquainted
with other people, culture, power, values and other notions. On the
other hand the well known actors playing in these movies represents
language, culture and they intentionally or not contribute bad and
good things to children. ( as well as to elders).
Rosina gives two important notions, the first one native speaker, and
the other one is English as second language. The interesting thing is
that just small phrase said by these two kinds of actors can become
popular among children whether it is ethically true or not. Language
for author is the thing that makes movie become interesting and
popular, however the senseless sentences can make children walk on bad
road.
To these influence we can add internet which is also used as
television and chat rooms which are also important in language
process. Many new phrases can be learned from there.
Many movies can be given as an example of this influence as "Pirates
of the Caribbean", "Man to Man", "End of the Spear" "Gladiator" and so
so on.
All these movies affect us. I want to take "Gladiator" and there is
good character Maximus who is killed by son of the Caesar which is bad
character- Commondus. By means of good character we understand
strongness, believe, right. Bad character just makes us imagine ruse,
ambition. The interesting thing is that children watching this movie
or others try to be like characters. The son of Caesar loves his own
sister and in sometimes tries to act unethically to his sister so
children can be affected from this and they can want to experience in
their own lives. In this film I think that Maximus is villager and his
behaviour, speech is representing this fact. In other side we see
aristocratic behaviours, speech, clothes. These differences become
significant point of movie.

I read the article, and considered Lippi-Green’s central argument
about how Disney’s animated films by using the different accented
characters, influence particularly children to get false perception of
reality. By using facts and statistics—appreciative study—she tries to
show mainly that “how children learn to assign values on the basis of
variation in language” impressed by Disney’s animated films, “linked
to race, ethnicity and homeland.” Her conclusion is ““What children
learn from the entertainment industry is to be comfortable with same
and to be wary with other and that language is a prime and ready
diagnostic for the division of what is approachable and what is best
left alone” that is convincing to me. To illustrate, she gives the
vivid examples from twenty-four films she viewed, analyzed characters
who used different accents. Disney’s Aladdin, where while good
characters—Aladdin, Jasmine and her father—are speaking MUSE, other
bad characters use Arabian accent. Here, she claims that especially
white children who are the main audiences of the cartoons are being
taught to appreciate the “same” (good, white, innocent or major people
speaking MUSE), and to fear the “other” (bad, black, guilty or minor
characters speaking Arabian accent). This racial and stereotypical
discrimination, she points out, is quite destructive for children that
leads them to accept this false reality. She continues her examples in
which there are also wrong gender perceptions Disney films propagated.
The roles of female characters (generally minor characters—mother &
wife, noticeably less participated than males) in these films
(1938-1994) are restricted to domesticity, whereas male characters
have the superior positions. Furthermore, she touches the setting in
these films, in which characters from different countries used the
foreign accented English. The characters in “The Lion King”, voiced by
the African American actors using AAVE mainly, have no “clear
connection to things African”, except Rafiki, the wise baboon who has
secondary role in that film. Another example is the “Beauty and the
Beast” settled in France. In this film, only five of all characters
(not any female characters) use French accented English, and the
audience can’t find any French characters who have negative behavior
and motivation. Therefore, this process makes children to believe that
all French people are good, industrious, and legal. Tout ensemble,
those animated films “created for, and viewed primarily by, children”,
are the clear barrier between real world and children who are abused
and sacrificed for the benefits of some “unknown” people or
organizations most probably on the base of politics that leads
children and adults to be satisfied with their products.
P.S.: I am not so much interested in movies, cartoon, etc. I generally
watch the news, and some Turkish soap operas which, I believe, reflect
the true reality—why we are sent here, what must we do, and what will
be our possible future hereafter. I have my own principles, and take
only what is useful from media presentations, then adopt them to my
own outlook. Please, do not call my way of thought stereotypical 

Hello my friends and good evening my dear teacher.
Rosina's writing in my opinion is very interesting for everyone, for
children and adults. Because I remember that when I was a little and
looked Disney's cartoon my parents looked these cartoon more willingly
than me. So these cartoons gain a big reputation in the world. And
these cartoons keep their popularity still nowadays.
For my understanding Rosina wants to say that movies, cartoons, films
play main roles in children's life. For children it is the good idea
to choose badness, from goodness, to see the face of life. From seeing
of that movies, cartoons heroes they begin to liken themselves to that
heroes. So we know that all good characters are always hero and always
throw their life to the dangerous. In these way movies, cartoons
present favorable influence to the children.
Now here author give Aladdin as an example. So she emphasized that
Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and her father talk like Americans, but
others have fluency accents and foreign people's accent are bad. Why
she said like so. Because in "Aladdin" only Princess Jasmine her
father, and Aladdin himself is a good character. Others were bad, and
busy with robbing, beating or other bad actions. So may be that's why
she said that foreign people accents are bad. And the same time from
characters we get information about those countries cultures,
language, traditions, life and etc.
It is good to encouraged people from childhood because of to choose
right way. For. E.g. in my childhood I liked to watch cartoons,
movies. In some events that happened here I every time put me inside
of that cartoon. I remembered when I was six year I watch one cartoon.
I can not remember this cartoon's name exactly, but in supposition it
named "Bat Man". Here hero is always helped people. But never gave his
personality. So he loved one girl and did everything that she wants.
Since that time I always wish that a boy like bat man is always help
people in their desperate situations and protect his lover from all
difficulties and Thank God I find that man. And I wish it for every
girl.
The differences from my childhood and nowadays the world increase very
quickly and of course it influenced in movies, cartoons, films and
ext. The actors who play in those movies have 2 peculiarities. Either
they pronounce right accent or use that language as a L2. So from
characters role the children catch information, catch the right and
wrong way. And here we get information that language is high level
things that make movies interesting among the children.
We know that all movies that we look have good and bad characters. My
last watching film was "The Dance with wolfs" in Language university
with my friend Minure. But I couldn't watch that film at the end. So I
want to write about "Brave Heart". That film directed by Mel Gibson.
Gibson portrays a legendary Scot, William Wallace. He achieves the
Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England. Here the good
character William killed by Edward (who is the bad character that
killed the sinless Scottish peoples) a result of betraying by his two
Scottish nobles. I know that all children especially my brother who
had twelve year in his all watching this film show his hating against
Edward and how want to be brave like William. So we see that movies
most time help us to be strong, divorced the good people from bads,
and encouraged them to understand the life rules. In my opinion we
need that kind of significant movies for all our life.

Lippi-Green accounts for "the sociolinguistic aspects of the
systematic construction of dominance and subordinance in animated
films aimed at children." She gives many examples from those films
that directly influence children's mind, opinion about the other
cultures. This process happens, she claims, mainly through the
language variations and accents voiced by the actors in general. The
unpleasant physical appearance of Jewish peddler as a wolf, and his
Yiddish accent in "Three Little Pigs" propagates Anti-Semitism--false
religious perception; good characters--Aladdin, Jasmine, and her father
speaking MUSE, bad characters using dialects in "Aladdin"--racial
prejudice; the irrelevant accent and characters to Swahili in Africa
(except Rafiki with minor role) in "The Lion King"--fictitious
representation; less female characters (in number) subjected to house
works than males showing their superiority in many Disney films--gender
discrimination; "all AAVE-speaking characters appear in animal rather
than humanoid form" in "Beauty and the Beast"--segregation, and so on.
These stereotypes are limiting and deceptive, even if they are not
overtly negative, Lippi-Green points out. Moreover, it influences
children's perception of what is real and unreal, what's important and
unimportant, what's good and bad, what's beautiful and ugly, etc. In
other words, these films just let them see the fraction of the
culture, people, religion, place, tradition and the like. By
constructing this often intentionally, they oblige the next generation
to perpetuate a false reality, thus misunderstand and misinterpret the
real world. The Kurds regarded as the illiterate, disgusting, inferior
people by their characters in Turkey. And when many Turks, who have
prejudice over them particularly, hear their accents on TV, the false
perception occur in their mind immediately--as if there are not any
Kurds in good character. So long!

Hi.
I think this method is good to teach childrens. Because childrens like
to learn visual than by read. Thats why cartoons is very good for
childrens to learn something. For example: I began to leanr english
with cartoon of "Big Muzzy". But there are also nice animations for
the childrens to teach them. There many cartoons and many characters.
I like cartoon "Ice of Age" most. There is character Mamont I like. He
is moving as like as his complex. It is teaching childrens to be
different. Because, while looking cartoons learning different things
because, characters are different. I think this the easiest way to
teach language to childrens.

Hi everybody
It's very interesting and important theme. Because we talk about
teaching children. The base of their learning must be strong. And we
must took care their education when they are little. We must give
attention to the movies, cartoons, films which they want to watch.
Because they learned many thinks from TV. Rosina Lippi-Green describes
movies, cartoons, and films influence on children. She says that
language which use in this movies also has bad or good influence on
children learning foreign language. If children look movie in target
language and this target language speaking with accent this bad for
those child. Because they cant learn target language with natural
accent. "is this a part of how children learn to assign values on the
basis of variation in language linked to race, ethnicity, and
homeland? She says it is first observably true that somehow, children
learn not only how to use variation in their own language, but also
how to interpret social variation in the language of others. They do
this with or without exposure to television and film but in the
current day, few children grow up without this exposure. Lippi Green
provide many statistic and facts. One of the fact she present from the
Disney film.
She gives example from the film Aladdin. There good character Aladdin,
Princess Jasmine and her father talk like Americans, but like other
Arab characters have accent. If a white child watches Aladdin and sees
that all the people with an Arabian accent are bad then this may lead
the child in thinking that all Arabian people act like this. In this
way children think that if character have accent it is a bad
character, if people white skin are known as a god.
I think that its very enjoyable and easy to learn from Cartoons,
films. I take it from my own experience that I learn Russion from TV.
Parents must to chose films or cartoons for children which for suit
their age. Such films those there not bad, evil characters which may
influence their mind. Watching films they mast part good or bad. And
they can learn about culture, history, language of different
countries. That will help them to improve their knowledge, and social
life.

Rosina Lippi-Greens Article forces us to think about how the TV
programs affect people life-directly or indirectly. Her conclusion
examines the discrimination and stereotypes toward different race,
ethnicity, gender etc. She points out that, pronunciation is very
important for example, in her article she notes that she has multiple
times watched the films animated by Disney film. She made such
decision that, the wrong pronunciations of open the path to the
confusion in all over the world. As I understand from this article, we
came across misused of accents in different films, such wrong actions
cause confusion in our mind, and we hesitate in speaking. What I want
to mare out is that, children are taught to discriminate through the
portrayal of the different accented characters in Disney films.

I have watched many cartoons animated by Disney film-Cinderella and in
fact, I met difficulties to catch the some words they pronounced. The
child or creature characters in the cartoon talk in a language the
children understand. They use contractions, children's vocabulary,
and slang terms. The strange voices the use to give effect to the
cartoon makes difficulties for the people whose English is second
language.

Children learn much from different films and cartoons and these
cartoons directly or indirectly influence their behaviors. What they
see on TV begin to imitate it. Therefore, language and culture are
very important while using them in films or cartoons. As I realize,
she strives to draw our attention to what they learn from the cartoons
and how these cartoons affected her.

Today, language teachers, linguists, try to use the best method to
teach, but there is no exact finding to solve the obstacles in
learning pronunciation in general. They meet difficulties while trying
to use best accent. It is because of every language learners has their
own troubles that strongly relate to their first language backgrounds.

I have recently watched the film Brave heart. There are some things, I
liked about the movie. First, those who wanted to enjoy Scottish
scenery were satisfied. Moreover, I have acquainted with Scottish
clans, Scottish music, and so on. The movie was very heroic. I saw
legendary hero traits. I liked the part of King Edward because he
played so perfectly repulsive. The role he played influenced me and
even today, when I came across a man named Edward I immediately
imagine him like King of Edward. The language they use in film was
different that today's English Language. In the film I felt that, they
did not pronounce the letter "h", so here becomes 'ere'. Such accents
transforms to our language( for a man who learns English)
At last, I want to say that as Rosina noted in her article indeed the
cartoons and movies influence our life.

Everybody gains something for her/himself from different kind of
sources. One of the most important ways to learn something useful for
you is movie or cartoons. From childhood we watch cartoons & take
something from them. So Rosina Lippi-Green touches this valuable topic
to discus. As we know Disney's cartoons are the most popular ones in
the world. Different kind of cartoons, with different kind of artists.
For her (R.L.Green) the full English accent is important for people.
Because of this point of view she divides the artists into several
parts. The best ones those who have American accent. But those who
have fixed or foreign accent are belonged to bad characters. And
always the good triumph over the evil. For example, in Disney's
`Aladdin` Aladdin, princess Jasmine & her father are good ones.
Because their talking is close to American accent. But other
characters are belonged to bad ones because of their bad accent.
Nowadays film is the only ones which make people contact with the
world outside. It means that by these films people become aware of
difficulties of the world or they get information from different kind
of culture. By these ways they learn not only culture's custom, but
also their language. So for all these achievements directors do all
for their best. For instance, they make actress to pass some lessons
about accents. By this way people make acquaintance with these accents
& have influence from many nations. For example in `Three little pigs`
director makes such kind of circumstances that people had dreadful
thought about Jewish ones. Or maybe by mixing accents directors want
to make film interesting, comic. As we see it in `Beauty & Beast`.By
colorful accent it is made much more motivated. Or in other case by
using African American accent they know something about race & nation.
From this point of view we can come to one conclusion that accent
play the most important role for teaching children from films point
of view.
Nowadays I saw one film which made me to watch it from first glance.
It is about one girl who has pig nose. She was cursed from her birth.
Years passed & her mother wanted her to get married. But nobody came
close to her. All escape to save themselves from this girl. But at
once one boy loved her. While other pulled their legs, that boy made
everything to be with this girl. He loved not her appearance, but her
inside beauty. So nevertheless bad ones blocked this couple's way,
they were happy together. It means good overcome evil. The same slogan
which we encountered in Disney's animated films.

Hi everybody,
The writer tells about the different accents in cartoons
and the reasons that Disneys animators use these differences. Children
are like a container as we had seen a different kind in Arts of the
Contact Zone. In their life they are started to be filled by their
around and by Tv. These tv programs influence their lifestyle and they
are affected too much from these programs. There are too many cartoons
in the world. And they all have different views on different events.
These cartoons reflects the cultures and children learn different
cultures from these cartoon. For example the cartoon Alaaddin had
showed me the lifestyles of Arabian people when I was a child. The
writer tells about the cartoon Alaaddin. In that cartoon the good
characters are from America and the bad-tempered characters are shown
from Arabia. This characterization affects the children. Because when
that child becomes older the thought of the Arabians of being bad
characters will stay in his/her background. Writer shows that cartoons
show the cultures to the citizens of other cultures. A small part that
is told in those cartoons can become very popular between children as
the writer says. This can be seen in all films. And in my opinion this
can cause the breakdown in the language. Because of the accents used
in those cartoons by the characters who is liked too much by children.
Additionally all the programs and movies that is shown
on tv affects us too much.We all learn new structures of languages in
these programs. For example this year I started to watch the serial on
E2 named two and a half man and the other footballers views etc.And I
learned too many new structures that I had never seen in books and
other films.

Hi everybody..
In this article Rosaline Lippi-Green talks about the animated
film and the affect which they leave on children...She tries to
explain how children are impressed by those films and what
should do be done... She makes her argument clear by bringing
examples from Aladdin and three little pigs...for.eg:"in Little
three pig " the wolf's described as Jew and he talks with Yiddish
accent an so on. And the other example is from Aladdin in Which
3main characters are speaking with American accent, the rest
speak with Arabic accent. Here we see a big discrimination of
nations. "Goods" are placed in high rank others placed in Lower,
and the hate toward Jews.
We know childrens'brain are like blank paper what is told or
shown good-bad are recorded immediately. As we know almost
every children are eager to learn something new and most of them
watch movies, cartoons. All these cartoons and films held bad
and good characters. Those bad characters are given in bad
condition, they are described ugly, terrible looking, evil, they
have a certain manner which makes children convince that they are
bad. On the other hand they have a special
accent ,pronunciation.. And the children believe all people who
came from foreign countries who has an accent different from
them are bad. As we know in the movies that the character and his/
her culture are bound to each other. If you come from another
country you also represent your culture as well. Thorough you
everybody gets acquainted with you. In most movies we see
servants, the lower rank people are consist of black people.
while whites embodies literate,gentle,kind characters...they have a
strange accents, even sometimes it is unclear what they say.
also the setting of male and female character are really
discriminated. We see males powerful and they work as police
officer, doctor, advisor to kings all good positions are
occupied by them but females can be only nurses, nannies,
housekeepers, they don't work outside at home. All those effect
the children and make them accept really like that in real
life..Becouse the child accept whatever see or hear without
exposure.
The author conclusion is convincing to me because we really
must be aware of what is shown and what is wanted to be said in
the movie directed to children.
I am not so addict to watching movies.. All the movies I
watched are in my own language or Russian..But I want to
support one of my group mate opinion about one Brazil soap opera
"Hadi". There Really Arabs, their culture ,life whatever belong to
Arabs are described so terrible...for ex: if I myself did not
know their culture before I would hate them at once. But
Brazils show them elite, literate, superior to Arabs in every
condition.. They really managed to create false Arabian
stereotype. Some people who are unaware of real Arabic culture
and their life obviously accepted them as they are shown is
movie.
So this kind of false interpretations keeps people from reality...

hi.
Rosina Lippi-green showed us that we can say movies, animated
cartoons are just only for amusing. But when we look at the films,
cartoons enter our brain unconsciously. this poblem is important under
10 and 11. Under the aged children believe everything what they see on
the films. Generally, our environment affects us if we want it or not.
Giving example from the cartoons she showed little children that they
do not still understand what is good for them what is not. And also
the author touched stereotypes toward different race, ethnicity,
gender, religion, nationality and region that Disney presnts in its
films. for example, in Three Little Pigs woolf was dressed as a
Jewish wear and also was spoken as a Yiddish accent. During the Second
World War in animated film was shown russian spy characters.
Passing the time cartoons, movies, films become change due to
people's thought. From cartoons we can see bad and good characters
that arise in different ways. There are also some serials that affect
not only littles but also teenagers that they begin to apply in their
lives and also make unpleasant things in other's life. Disney
cartoon's may be carry as a propogandized machine. because nowadays
everything comes from America. And showing like the movies they want
to roll all over the world. In Arabian Nights giving that three major
characters- Aladdin, Jasmin, JiN as speaking in english well,
differentiates with others, being nicety children are attrcted. Like
other characters speak in arabic, are barbarians, and etc. To think
healthy we must read more and more. Nowadays everything does not go
straightly. Now we are democrats we can say what we want everything-
good or bad. Do not think of other's feelings. We ourselves must know
what is wrong or right not falling our envitonment's effect. Thinking
healthy coming from the family not from our environment. If our family
is interested in our thoughts and our parents give straight direction
how to behave, then we will never loose our way in our life not
affecting by films and serials into our brains.
Her conclusion is that she rejects Disney movies, cartoons. Writing
this article she indicated that we must be carefull in the
life.

Hi everyone!

In Azeri language it is said that child's brain is a white
sheet. What children learn, stays on the white sheet forever. As an
answer to the first question i' d say that, yes, children assign
values by watching animation films.Characters' behaviors in cartoons
they watch affect their thinking and shape it.Technology makes it
possible for children to explore the world, various cultures, people
etc.TV programmes, cartoons, videos play important role in childrens'
lives.Rosina provides good examples from different cartoons. The
character of peddlar wolf with jewish accent is an interesting
example. When child watches this character on cable not only s|he comes
to hate it but jewish people also.In Aladdin's case protoganists speak
perfect english while bad characters speak with heavy arabic
accent. Thus children begin to favour the accent of good characters
thinking it important , and hate the accents of bad characters. From
here emerges the issues of ethnic, race, religion, gender
discrimination.Another interesting example by Lippie is about
gender. She points out that most female characters are mothers, nurses
etc concerned only with household while males are doctors, teachers
and etc.Lippie truly says that ideal characters in Dysney films must
be white, young attractive.Protaganists must speak with perfect accent
while ugly and bad characters with "bad"accent. All these affects
childrens' psychology great deal. They want to be like the protaganist
characters, symply because they are presented as ones who serve good,
not evil.Film makers know childrens' psychology well, so they use
these tricky methods.
I have recently read in one newspaper that great majority of
teen-ager girls feels themselves unhappy. They want to be slim and
attractive as models in advertisments.Paper reports that models are
made attractive by computer technology and teen agers fail to know
it.The advertisers discriminate people according to their looksthe. The
other example i'll draw from the serial "Cloun" .There is much obvious
religious discrimination in this serial. The bad sides of certain
religions are given in very exaggerated ways.

Hi
Firstly I wanna to say that, I'm fond of cartoons and these question
will too easy to answer. It is also the easiets way to teach
childrens. Because, to teach visual is good than other methods. Most
of the childrens fond of cartoons. And there are many cartoon and many
characters. Every children has his character from the cartoons.
"Packemon", "King Lion" and other cartoons is very interesting for the
childrens. For Example: King Lion. Children looking the lion as a
Hero. But, mine favorite cartoon is "Vini&puh". Character Vini is
comic for me. But, if we can think it as a children Vini is a symbol
of friendship. Bad character I can show from the King Lion movie.
Uncle of the Lion. I also can show the bad character from the cartoon
"Batmann". This is the best way to teach childrens.

Hello everyone,

Giving in examples,Aladdin and good characters which is created by
Disney are easily affect to children and their behaviours. In that
point Rosina Lippi-Green draw attention to that event.
For example, the author gives example from Aladdin and
the good characters from America others who speak strangely and
speak differently are from Arabia. This continuity makes children
think wrong. That is, we can say that author imply TV and programmes
are the implements which give informations to other people, culture,
power, values and other notions.
On the other hand the well known actors playing in these
movies, cartoons and attractives represent language, cultures and
vaccinate theirs good or bad behaviours to children.

For example the cartoon Alaaddin shows and givng informations about
Arabian , their lifestyles and point of views to world. If children
find a wrong behaviour in this cartoon and find out there is no
penalty at the end of this behaviour, they start to come into their
lifes. But if (s)he find a reaction that not hoping, (s)he begin to
prejudice about arabian.
Because of that I do not want to give specific example about movies
or cartoon unlike the people who has written in this group.

Used language or accents play great role of characters and giving
message of him/her to children that they reflect in nwhich group they
belong. In that point Rosina find out that important fact. if one of
the character use their language smoothly, people imagine good things
about him/her.
Also point of views of characters are also reflect their goodness or
badnees. Stealing something or drinking days and nights reflect their
role in movies.

good evening my dears, and sorry for being late.
i think that cartoons, animations play an important role in children's
life. as adults learn some new things from films, children also, get
new informations from each cartoon. if we remember our childhood we'll
see that each of us had favourite cartoon and we learned many things
from them.they help us to see the life from animations' eyes, to
differentiate good from bad, i.e, this is a kind of school, a visual
one which is more effective, and delightful than other learning
methods. but here Lippi-Green shows other point about Disney cartoons,
that the way how to differentiate characters:if the character is good,
he speaks good English, if he's bad, so he'll speak with an accent.
now, let's look at films. we'll see the same thing-the bad character is
always distinguished with his appearance, mimics, clothes, voice and
accent as in cartoons.Minure mentioned very good that we have never
looked at films in English before, only translations,so we could not
differ the characters by their accent. but we could see that the
strangers were always bad characters. i cannot name any of the films
but i would say that approximately in all films we see the strange
bands, terrorists, mafia, etc, which means that strangers are always bad.
(except some exceptions). that's all,see you,bye.

Hi everybody!

For some people, especially for children the TV, movie, cartoon
is the window to see the world, to know about other nations, about
their cultures and languages. We see that in movie the characters are
distinguished. They are distinguished for their speech, language,
appearance. But the most important thing is the language. The language
helps us to distinguish the characters. All of them use the same
language but different accents. As Rosina Lippi Green shows in ALADDIN
the "good" characters Aladdin, Princes Jasmine and her father speak in
English without accent. But others, I mean "bad" characters speak in
foreign Arabic accent. Movies and cartoons have influence on children.
It can be good or bad influence.

When I was child I distinguished the characters not for their
accents, but their appearance, speech and tone of their voice. But now
when I watch the films in English I can discriminate the characters by
their accents. The "good" characters speak in English; they are nice
and handsome, gentle and sometimes white. But I think it is not a true
notion that all the "good" characters are the whites. It can make
racist thoughts on children. In some films that I have watched there
are only blacks who are loafers, robbers, offenders in the streets.
They are dirty, fat and speak in African American accent. And it makes
an unpleasant thought about the blacks on me. But I know that it is
not so.

Hi friends!
First I want write that this is also interesting and important
subject. While reading Lippi-Green by Rosina ,I revived all of the
cartoons, movies I had seen.we know that every country is known with
its education, history, culure etc.And education have to begin from
childhood, haw can you educated your child when he/she is kid? It's
clear that you can't order him to write, study or read
something, because at that time he/she do everything unconsciously, they
don't have such a ability to write to read, while they are baby.In this
way what to do?Haw to make them to learn language,to speak,to rote?We
have to communicate with them and choose interesting tv programs, in
the speech it would be easy to say these things. But it is very
difficult and serious.First of all, because while we are kid we learn
everything as parrots,we don't know the really meaning or we don't
care what we say ,that's why parents have to be seriously while
bringing up us.All of us watched cartoons when we were kids.We liked
to spend much more time near the tv and watch our lovely cartoons. That
time we didn't know we learn much things from them and begin to
behaive as them(characters of movie, cartoons).Sometimes we became
afraid the bad ones, then we hate them,I think it is bad sides of the
cartoons, because of without meaninig,"hate"we feel some bad things in
our inside. Then this hate grow up.Example in Aladdin there divided two
types of man- good ones ,bad ones .Good ones are white, innocent or
major people speaking muse, the bad ones black, blameworthy
characters, who speak Arabian accent.Accent what does it mean?-A way of
pronouncing the words of a language that shows which country orea a
person comes from.It makes unlike differentness. While watching these
cartoons we became afraid of the blacks. And it make people
raciest. These things were not staged unconsciousnessly, other way these
were consciousnessly. The producer's aim were clear to open bad page on
the little one's brains for the blacks. And blacks accents also were
bad side for the little learners,it makes them to mix good, literary
language with jargon,non-literary language.Example while we are kids
our parents watched us foreign cartoons, their aim was to make us to
learn the second language, for ex-my mother opened tv searched Russian
cartoons and I began to watch,to take some words from them,in this
time there are problems as Rosina explained us.These problems are
accents, accents make us not to learn the literary language
fluently.Dear mothers care what your children watch and take from
them.Explain them everything while watching.dont give them to search
tv programs themselves.:)))))))

Hello my friends and teacher!
Firstly, I want say this article was interesting for me. TV plays a
great role in our life and also in the life of children. Especially
cartoons and movies help children to learn and to realize some points
from life. But from the language side I don`t agree that children
watch cartoon. Of course every actor has his/her own accent and may be
this thing effects child` s speaking. I want to show an example: in
our relatives they have a child three years old. He likes to watch
cartoons. He gets up and run to the CDs and forced his mother to put a
movie for him. Of course mother doesn`t refuse him. But this child
can`t speak. Because his mother does not teach him how to speak.
Instead of it she puts cartoons or movies and this child watch. Also
these films are in Russia. But family is azeri. That is our problem. I
think that cartoons in other languages can be terrible for little
children. May be when child can speak this may be effective for him or
her. From the side of learning other cultures life or something else
it can be good. Also learning "bad" and "good" meanings from movies
are good. Because cartoons easily make children understand these.
Visual effect has many opportunities than others. And children always
learn many things from visual learning.
I also impressed from the film "Hade" like many of my friends. But I
do not like that film. May be from this film many of my friends learn
many things but I want to say that most of the things were just
imagination of Arabian culture. Everything was not like that. Because
no one I mean except native person can not act or set a film from the
life of other country. I just like noted that everything in the
cartoons or films do not express culture or life of other countries.
It will be good if you read books or journals to have some information
about culture of some country.

Hi people!

In this article Rosina gives a wide view of what most of would not see
or realize. She speaks about the animated films for children and its
influence on them. It is really very interesting how and what children
learn from those films. In the article we see different animated films
analyzed by means of language (especially), appearance, behavior and
etc. children while watching are influenced by all these aspects. They
learn about other nations, different people, good and evil from those
cartoons i.e. from what they see and understand. Besides of its
entertainment aim animated films for children have many life messages
to its audience. The author also gives many statistical data about the
speech, appearance, behavior and position (by means of good and evil)
of the characters according to the language - varying English in the
content of dialects, region and etc. In her conclusion, whether
children learn to assign values on the basis of variation in language
linked to race, ethnicity and homeland, she states that "...even the
highest standards in film making cannot be free of the social
construction of language. It is after all, part of the social
behavior..." it means that she herself agrees with the point that
children learn to assign values on the basis of variation in language
linked to race, ethnicity and homeland. And she comes to this
conclusion through her study of and analyses of many different
animated films. For ex: in Aladdin the audience understands Arabs as
being barbaric. Also in Aladdin though all the characters speak
English /logical language is Arabic/, dominant and good characters
speak with clear, standard English accent the others have heavy Arabic
accent. The majority of females' roles are described as wives and
mothers rather than socially active or working person. Though majority
of female characters are described as positive, the bad ones are never
shown as dynamic that changes, unlike male characters since bad male
characters change and become good. It influences children's view of
man and women. Most of animated cartoons imply on audience that if the
character does not have good, clear, Native or US English accent that
is more likely bad one. And if the character has bad/heavy accent this
character is certainly described as being from other nationality,
country, or it can be race. Cerafully watching children entail
different messages fom them such as it is not right to tell the lie,
respect and love for others, elders, family, and that bad people have
bad accent, they are not as white as good ones are, they have not so
good appearance, they are usually alone and many other meanings.
Now coming to my experience I'll say something about "The Lion King"
that I watched it many times. In cartoon Lion is described as a King,
benevolent in all aspects. He is the owner of all areas that Sunshine
falls on, so there is described one part where there is sunshine, the
place which is dark and fearful. From this film children can easily
see the power, and being good using this power. So the Lion and
everyone surrounding him are given as good characters while hyenas as
bad characters. The difference between them is described very clearly.
First from the point of their living places. Lion or all good
characters live in clean, wide areas with lots of food, green grass,
water (rivers) but the place where hyenas live is very dark, gloomy,
and full of elephant bones-cemetery of elephants. There are always
lack of food and water. The most interesting part is when Uncle Scar
comes to throne. Though he is the brother of Mufasa he is given as
negative character which has not so wise, good appearance and with the
scar on his face. When he comes to throne everything is destroyed,
everywhere there is a starvation and so on. Children watching it
assume the specific features of goods and bads.
Or I can talk about the movie "Crash" which is very interesting by
means of its description of culture, race, and authority. If the one
having no idea about race, being black, being treated like black after
watching it can have a clear understanding about all these points.
Because in the movie black people are given as negative, in some
aspects ugly, inferior with limit power. But all American white people
as having all authority, power, they are dominant and superior. This
treatment influences even the relation between black themselves. Most
of them cannot defend their rights only for their skin color even when
they are the right ones. Thus in this movie we can say good and bad,
inferior and superior characters are discriminated by means of race
issue.

This story is very interesting and modern.Of course Disneys cartoon
influence the life of children .By watching these cartoon they learn
more things :custom, tradition, behaviour and etc.But it is sometimes is
not so.Language is important while making film.Language can make the
film popular. In this essay it is explained by Rosina Lippi
Green.
We see that everytime good character win over the bad chracter. Each
film has its own bad and good chracter. The film which I watch "JANNA
DARK".The main character is JANNA.Her bravity makes her as a good
chacter. She was against the injustice, she loves her nation very
much. This things make her as a good chracter.

Hi, everyone.
This topic has really great role influencing on children especially
under the age of 2,10... Cartoons, movies make contact to the world
outside our homes and communities.Especially for children,it is the
only view they have of people of the other races and national origins.
By watching them, they inherit acts, behaviours or image of their
favourite characters and they began to act like that, in other word,
want to experience them in real life.
The main purpose is to teach children how to live by showing the
roles of female and male in society through movies. For ex:30% female
characters are shown as princesses, mothers, docters, nurses etc. Male
characters - as advisors, kings, hunters etc.
The interesting fact is that in Disney films all positive characters
speak Muse, British, American accent, but negative, unattractive
characters who represented low class people speak English with foreign
accent. I think this is a policy or may be she wanted to show that
children learn discrimination by hearing different kind of accent. But
this way she makes the films interesting, comic and enjoyable. In her
conclusion she said "What children learn from the entertainment
industry is to be comfortable with same and to be wary about other and
the language is a prime and ready diagnostic for this division between
what is approachable and what is best left alone".This is the anti-
muslim act pointed out that from the film Aladdin"good people-
Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and her father-talk like Americans, while
all other Arab characters have heavy accents. So from here we can
understand that children are taught to fear the other.By the way, same
means white people or people speaking Muse. Wary means cautious or
figure out if you safe. So, same people are always known as the good
guys and other people are known as the bad guys. If white child wathes
Aladdin and sees that all the people with an Arabian accent are bad
then this may lead the child thinking that all Arabian people act like
this.According to Lippi, the way the entertainment industry teaches
children indirectly telling children that people with accent carry out
bad actions, but white skined people carry out right actions and they
are innocent people.
I didn't see recently new movie. But my favourite cartoon is "Mulan".A
brave girl from one Chinese village shows herself as a boy for
protecting her native land and fights against enemy and wins the war.I
think this kind of cartoons reflect not only littles, also elders like
as me.

These subject is about language of good and bad characters that I
really haven`t paid any attention before, for as you can imagine we
are not familiar with accents in English and we have watched these
movies in translated versions, so I didn`t take notice of language and
accents. However, the race discrimination remains recognizable both in
movies and cartoons. I have had the similar thoughts before reading
this article; moreover I talked about this subject with my classmates.
The worst situation in it is that children watch these films and they
are not have their own opinions yet, as a result they begin to adapt
themselves to imaginary movie scenes; they become Peter Pans, Robin
Goods, Spidermans, terrorists, hackers, thieves or someone else who
they admired in movies and cartoons. Although they name these movies
as an entertainment, besides that these movies become our educators,
our virtual educators with its bad and good sides. In fact, media has
very greet influence on peoples` life-style and thoughts. For example
for many years Armenians have been spreading rumorus about
extermination of Armenians by Ottoman impire government. However,
Armenians themselves have been exterminating Turkish and
Azerbaijanians for many years and they haven`t stopped their violence
against us. By the help of Media they want to creat a movie about
their ridiculous statement, and they invited very famous actor, M.
Gibson to play hero. And can you imagine why? Because they know that
it would be more attractive if famous one take place in it. In adition
they can easily make people accept the false information as real. I
can give an example from the fact that for many years we have believed
that Hitler treated Jewess badly; he gave an order to exterminate
them. But in fact, he was a man who collected Jewess from different
parts of world and took them to Israel-the place that they dreamed day
and nights, as a result was created a Jewess country Israel, but
before that time they were spread all over the world. This is reality,
but the famous movie `Pianist` tries to convince us of the truth of
their tragedy. This movie is so convincing that you can disagree
having known the reality. And there are so many movies with similar
subject and these are all very successful nowadays.
Author gives us the useful informations about Disney movie and
cartoons and questioned the intention of making that movie or
cartoons. Is it really enjoyable or can be other goals in making
films? Do the films carry out educational purposes or are these only
weapons to destroy minds and lifes to adapt to the imaginary movie
scenes that have not any relation with reality? Results of the
analyses show us that accents and heavy languages of different nations
were given intendedly in the most of the movies and cartoons. Racisim
and discrimination playing the main role in peoples` lives and this
fact passed to Media, too by the people who support racism and
discrimination. It is obvious in characters language settings when
heroes speak with MUSE correct English, while ontogonists and bad
characters speak English language with accent and heavy spelling. Not
only languages of the characters, but also characters life styles and
their living conditions have influence on spectators` opinion forming
processes.
If there will be script writers who has sincere purposes with creating
movies or cartoons which will remain only as entertainment for
children and adults theye are welcome. But now we can`t name these
movies and cartoons educational for children. What can a child learn
from the "Over the Edge" cartoon while hero is a professional thieve.
Ofcourse, there are also, good characters in it, but it is not enough,
for child can adapt both right and wrong. In adition, children are
not responsible for their actions, and they are not in the age of
making right descisions, they can easily choose a wrong lifestyle for
themselves.
I watched many movies and cartoons recently and I can say that new
movies have more colloquial, bad language and swear words in it. I`m
thankful to Allah that I watched these films alone, not together with
my brothers, for it would be very shameful for me. And I wander
whether children watched OddLot Entertainment production film,
producer Lexy Alexandr "Green Street Hooligans" or not. This movie
consist of only swaying words (f....) and nothing else, beside that
crime, drunk adults, immoral behaviors are the main subject in
movie.
There are no any close family relations that could be a good example
for the children or adults. To tell the truth I never sit and watch
movies together with my family, for I know that almost every movie has
erotic scenes, bad language. For our customs and mostly for Islam
these scenes are not moral. I`m against these immoral movies and
cartoons which have gender problems, racism and discrimination scenes
in it. We should be very cautious about choosing cartoons and movies
when allow our children to watch them.

Hi, my friends!

I also liked cartoons in childhood. But now I am not interested in it.
In cartoons there are good and bad characters. When children look at
this cartoons, they try to do as the characters. They think that all
happened are true. They memorize this characters. That's why, most
parents don't allow their children to look at horror, fights cartoons/
films. The characters, their behaviors' influence childrens'
behaviors, thoughts. And also language, accent are important. Children
cann't understand the meaning, but they hear accent, speaking. If the
language is easy, they can understand it. This cartoons aren't only
entertainment, but also play important role-show cultures, traditions,
different races, behaviors.

Hi.I am sorry for being late.So let's start.
Child learn from the very start from his/her life- womb. And he/she
learn by imitating other. The way of learning is in 2 aspect. 1
environment and 2- television. But how do you think is it good way of
teaching children showing them movies, cartoons going on television
program? The answer might be different. But mostly, the bad effects
seems be vivid. Thus Rosina Lippi-Green give such a question in her
article "Teaching Children How to Discriminate What we learn from the
Big Bad Wolf" that " Is part of how children learn to assign values on
the basis of variation in language linked to race, ethnicity, and
homeland?" . She answered her question in her article and the entire
writing of Rosina conveys this question. First of all she speaks about
cartoons which have substantial role in psychology of child. The
psychology of child include to the theory of Freud's Id. As we know
Freud's psychoanalysis from the aspect of a person have 3 points: 1.id
2.ego .3 superego. Id is a person who do and act unconsciously. They
do and want to do what they want. They never think about whether it is
good or not. Id is mostly about child psyche. The 2nd is ego. This
person is also wants to act by his desire including good and bad. But
he/she thinks about his/her bad passion. She knows that the
environment, society will not accept. So only for that reason she/he
stops doing or carrying out of these desires. The 3rd is superego. It
is obvious from its name that this kind of person is like angel. They
know what is good and bad. And they never act bad thing in their life.
So we see how Freud concentrate on id theory and its reflection to the
child psyche. You may ask what have connection between Freud's Id and
Rosina's cartoon and movies. Pay attention to Aladdin. This is a
cartoon and his name connects with mythical Arabian kingdom.
"The good guys-Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and her father- talk
like Americans, while all the other Arab characters have heavy
accents. This pounds home the message that people with foreign accent
are bad"
From this statement we see that this type movie teaches children
to discriminate language variation linked to race, ethnicity and
homeland. The directors are significant to these cartoons to be
produce. Perhaps, this has connection between policy. Let us say,
Americans have cold war between Arabian. So the Arab characters who
talk with heavy accents have reflected to childish worldview that
Arabians are bad with speaking so they may thing they are bad. Now you
see it's easy to reflect child psychology.
Rosina mostly speaks about the accent. Simultaneously, she
spoke about movies, film. She wants to point out that the characters
who are not originally US English , have heavily accent in their
language. And perhaps they may then tutoring, but not all of them are
successful acquire language as native. They may learn L2, and only
target the English. And also via verse. The actressor actor might be
English .and his/her role is as a foreign. Of course , she/he tutored
with foreign language. But she/he may have troubles also in scene with
L2. And for Rosina the language is tool for actor/actress for acting.
In addition , she touch to the issue of gender and race. For
instance, in most movies, the women are waitress, nurses, nannies, or
housekeepers. Men are doctors, waiters, advisors to kings, thieves,
hunters, detectives and pilots and so on. So we see, the movies also
teach gender discrimination to children mind . They are taught from
these movies that women can not go out of house. But men are free.
They could do whatever they want.
As race discrimination, I can say that AAVE(African English)
speaking characters appear only animal rather than humanoid. MUSE( US
English) can appear both humanoid and animal. So we see AAVE have less
opportunity to speak. The worth is that that only may appear as
animals. In such way we see that how Americans treated them, and how
they saw AA (African Americans) for their worldview. At the same time,
in the movies, MUSE are attractive, romantic rather that AAVE.
Because, US are white, but AA are black.
The conclusion of Rosina Lippi-Green is that to show children
how TV movies ,spatially Disney animation, films reflect children's
thought and show them how they use cartoons, movies to teach children
how to discriminate.
Recently, I watched Russian film, which was called "Mussulman".
This was about one man who was Russian guy, went to army to
Afghanistan and then was captivated by afghan soldiers. He stays there
for a long time, and Afghans taught him to pray as Moslem. Then,
Afghans liberated him. He returned to his homeland and came to his
mother's house. Now, he was mussulman. And in his speech was afghan
accent and Arabian language. Nobody accepted him .because, he changed
his own language, religion. Even if, his mother and brother couldn't
understand him. His brother was treated with him as enemy. Everyday,
his brother hit him. They fight with each other.
He always, performed the ritual prayers of Islam. Every morning,
he climbed up to the hill and began to call Azan (A call for device in
Moslem countries). Then he was pursued by his enemy. The enemy was his
Capitan in the war of Afghanistan. The enemy was also Russian. At the
end they meet. The main character-Mussulman asked him what he wants
from him. The antagonist answered; why you become Moslem. Go back and
be again Christian. The Mussulman answered; no, I could not be
Christian. Because, I am Moslum. Then the antagonist killed him with
knife. So, this film, has not only language but also religious
discrimination linked with ethnicity and homeland. I think this film
have somehow moral significance. this film intersect with war and
religion. The director draw all situation happened during the war. The
most interesting thing for me was how director use Muslim religion in
a good characteristics nevertheless it is Russian film. And as we know
Russians are Christians. I suspect, The director of film might accept
Moslim. You know there are many things we don't know or imagine. After
all, the world is full of mystery.

Hi everyone. I know I sent very early Ok, sorry
May be my answer won’t be necessary. But I want to share my ideas with
you.
Really cartoon or animated films influence children. Children try to
discover the world. They want to learn everything.
In one film son doesn’t speak with his father. The reason is “why his
father is not a hero”.
And everyone knows some children throw himself from window. They
imagine that they will fly. When we hear such news we laugh. But this
is really a problem. Parents must be attentively choosing cartoons or
animated films.
In my childhood I did not like Germans and Frances. What was the
reason? Really I don’t know.
In animated films if bad characters speak in German language children
begin to hate their language. When they grow up they don’t want to
come across speaking in this language.
If you love somebody you want to be as he or she. You like all his or
her behavior. And if you hate someone this hate close your eyes and
you can’t see his or her good sides. I want to say if child hate bad
character he hates her language then people speaking in this language.
At last in child’s brain appears prejudice.
Yes. Rosina Lippi Green touches perfect idea. I agree with her. In
animated film Wolf speaks in Jews accent. And all we know that wolf
symbolizes bad people.
Last year I watched animated film Ice age2. You know there are two
little mice. If I have mistaken please correct. I remember that these
two little mice speak in French accent. They are not bad characters
but they are little and comic. I think everything is clear.
Every nation investigates ways to influence people. And some of them
has began. Because of that we must be attentively. We must protect our
language, customs and etc.

hi my dear teacher and class

firstly I want to say my excuse for being late
but teacher it was not my faut. I and whole class have not papers. If
it is possible to accept my answer.

my understanding on the first question is that the main language-
English is given from different accents. May be the auther wanted to
show the real way of pronouncing the English language. We can see it
while reading also. In the popular movies all bad characters are given
as foreign ones. Of course there will wrong pranaunce also. From this
chlidren can understand one he or she is the bad or different one
her conclution is that bu using ENGLISH cartoons wanted to show race
discrimination. Also historical events that took place in the world. we
can see it IN THE 3 LITTLE PIG. i THING TO PRESENT HISTORICAL AND
OTHER ACTIONS BY CARTOONS IS THE RIGHT WAY.iT SOME HOW GIVES
CHILDREN SOME INFORMATION BEFORE GOING SCHOOL

The last film that I watch last was DEVIL. IT is a azerbaijanian film
that was devoted our famous poet HUSEYN CAVID.
tHERE WE CAN SEE RUSSION EMPIARES`S PREASURE TO OUR LITERATURE AND

hello..firstly i wana say that i am really sorry for my late answer
but i really didnt mean to..but just the conditions...and i will be
very happy if Mrs Alisson would have accepted my late answer..
in the article writer talks about tv and tv programmes and their
affects on our lifes.the programes and stereotypes in there affects
our life unconsiously.for better or worse television and flms are the
main part of our life and they are the only way of getting attached
with the world out side, mainly for the children.specially for the
childrens the tv programmes and cartoons are the only way of having
ideas of other race people or national regins.
i have always known that those programs affects our life pretty much
but the question that came in to my mind is 'HOW' because i never
really understod how..how those things affects u when u watch any
movie or cartoon you only see simple characters, good or bad king or
queen female or male runing after one particular thing.so how do these
cartoons affects childrens mind and their thoughts?after reading this
article i absolutely found the answer of all my questions.
now i know that it is not the cartoon or the subject of the cartoon
that affects childrens mind.it is the characters in it.it is abobout
the apperiance or accent or behaviour of the characters that affects
childrens mind and changes their thoughts for example in cartoons
specially in alaaddin you see alaaddin and the prince talking with BE
but others in arabic accent and we see that all the good characters
speeks with pure english accent but the bad characters with other
accents.so it is sticked in to the mind of kids that anybody who
speaks bad english are bad!!cartoons also differentiate between the
sexes, they teach the different point of view or the responsibilities
of the male or the female..for instanse in the cartons we always see
women as a mother who sacrifice herself for her children or the nurse
who always help ppl.or we seea male character as a father or a king or
anything else.the characters can sometimes be bad as well but most of
the time by the end of the cartoon they understand their mistake and
become good..so by this way cartoons affects the mind of childs
unconsiouscly..
