We have finally sold one of our clients on using ResourceSpace as their asset manager. Now I have been asked what it will cost to host the system. I was hoping someone could give me an idea on what they think a good amount of memory is for the server that RS is on.

I'm not looking for a minimum, but more like the amount of memory that RS will work really well with.

Any opinions?

Thanks!
Colin

One key is that you need enough memory to fit size of the entire database and indexes comfortably in RAM. Without that you'll definitely have unnecessary performance issues.

I don't think that's right Tom. Although it's ideal to have the whole DB in RAM it's not strictly necessary. Some databases are huge.

Anyway, memory is cheap so I would add as much as you can.

The question wasn't about necessity.

Jeff - Tom said you 'need' to fit the database in memory - that's not the case - and you won't suffer performance issues if you can't.

Colin, you're question is one that often gets asked, but it's more complex than you're leading it out to be.

It's really not enough to just consider RAM. Processing power, average number of concurrent users, number of resources, types of resources...these all play a part in the overall performance of RS. Each install is going to be different.

If you happen to be looking at some hosting solutions where RAM is cheap (or you are the hosting solution and you can get RAM cheap), getting more will remove RAM as a potential performance bottleneck, which is always nice IMO.

Thank you all for your input. I understand the complexity of the question. Of course I was hoping for a simple answer though!  :)  We have RS on a VPS, so we are limited in some ways, but we can scale RAM up to a good amount. I think I'll start with 1GB and see how that works for our situation.

Thanks again,
Colin
