Hi Everybody,

With Chromebooks now accounting for well over half of the PCs in education these days, every school day 30,000 new Chromebooks are activated in schools. There's lots of them floating around now. We just received 1800 Chromebooks from a school district. 

 The biggest obstacle​s were getting the school to deprovision them correctly. The wiping and updating took about 10 minutes each.  Wiping and updating Chromebooks that we're previously on a domain proved to be an interesting set of keystrokes.

 We also ended up canabolizing about 250 for parts only.

Still much easier than installing Linux.

    keep in mind, folks, there is a version of Linux that has been designed especially to run well on Chromebooks --

      It does take a while to do the install, but perhaps if you did one install, you could clone that

hard drive to other Chromebooks of the same vintage.

      Note - GalliumOS will not install on all Chromebooks.  There is a list of the Chromebooks it will install

Why would anyone do that?  I mean, if it is designed for Chrome, and Chrome is free, why put the square peg in the round hole?  I understand why Linux folks like to put Linus on a box designed for Windows, but not this one.  “Splain me” ???

Good question, Sean.  With a full Linux install, this Chromebook can run virtually any Linux program -- including TuxPaint (a very fun painting program for young kids). A high school student that I mentor converted his Chromebook to full Linux and finds it meets his needs a lot better. Also, a full Linux install allows Chromebooks to directly print to a much wider range of printers. Chromebooks, on their own, can only print to "cloud-printers" (wifi-enabled printers), as I understand.

I read Phil's article about GalliumOS, looked into it, and was excited to try it. Then I realized that the Chromebooks we have are more useful as Chromebooks than with Linux.  There are so many inexpensive and donated laptops which are eminently suited for Linux - why not leave the Chomebooks as Chromebooks? ChomeOS is an excellent environment for many people, since they can do 95% of what they want to do (browsing, email, music, videos) and the learning curve is much easier than for Linux.

It is wonderful to have GalliumOS available to us, but the people who seem to be most enthusiastic are technically advanced users. For example, a friend of mine who is a software developer converted a Chromebook to Linux because that way he could get very nice hardware for a cheap price.

I have tried going in the other direction - using the free CloudReady operating system to turn old laptops into virtual Chromebooks. The process is fast and suitable for many old laptops (e.g. more recent than Pentium IV).

We use Linux (Ubermix.org) on all our donated laptops and desktops.  We've distributed about 4000 free computers with Linux installed.

On the Chromebooks we decided to stay with ChromeOS for simplicity (our own), familiarity (the student recipients have already used Chromebooks in school), and because ChromeOS is already Linux.  I also really like ChromeOS because it is just works, no hassle.

We try to use the best tool for the situation.

The ability to load Linux onto Chromebooks could be a lifesaver for older Chromebooks.

After a model has been out for several years, Google no longer guarantees updates,  They may or may not continue to support them.
