Like many of you, we sell refurbished Windows 7 computers, mostly to low-income individuals. We find that malware is a problem for some of our recipients: they get infected again and again. We have been giving verbal advice on how to avoid malware (and trying to configure computers so they are more resistant to it) but we feel this is insufficient. Thus we are putting together some documentation on avoiding malware. We intend to include this documentation with every installed computer. It's not clear that this will help (who reads manuals anymore?) but we are hoping that at least a few people benefit.

Are there resources that you use to educate people about malware and how to avoid it? If so, could you share them? Is there a repository of good information that people on the list use?

If people are interested, we can link to the documentation we are putting together once it is ready for release. It is somewhat specific to the Computer Recycling project here, but some of the information is more widely applicable.

For certain installs we are now recommending http://www.toolwiz.com/en/products/toolwiz-time-freeze/. We setup the custom environment ahead of time, for business and library / learning centers they lock them down. There is a password protection, we update them when necessary and you can leave an Excluded folder in downloads are required. It’s not a solution for all situations but the product is free, not open source and has been working in our current environments.

I look forward to check out your documentation, this is a large issue for our environments too and it’s really hard for most people to manage this themselves without training.

We have also found Time Freeze to be an excellent product for use in libraries or with young children or other users who may accidentally delete important files.

You can also advise your client to download Malware Bytes, a free anti-malware program for individual use.  Malware Bytes is excellent at removing adware that slows down system performance and catches Trojans and other destructive malware.  Malware Bytes can be run in safe mode so the malware can be deleted before the system is up and running.  The client must update the definitions to use the free product.  We advise them to run it monthly unless the computer is having problems, then run it more often.

Send them along, please. I do have a brief section about Malwarebytes in the documentation, but it is good to know what others are doing.  One issue is that although Malwarebytes is free for individuals it is not free for computer shops. How do you deal with that?

We have ordered the full version for our nonprofit computers in use in our office but supply Malware Bytes for the individuals buying our low-cost computers.

Paul, one of the trickier things about the free version of Malwarebytes is finding it.  We have used https://ninite.com/  to generate the installer which automatically gets the latest version and at the same time does not include any extraneous options.

Here is a draft of our documentation. Our intent is to include the
files locally on the computers we sell, and/or to include a link to
the website directly.

Comments and suggestions are welcome (although we don't promise to
implement them all).
