Using hybrid hard drives on older laptops

I'm refurbishing some Windows XP laptops and I'd like to upgrade some of the drives on these computers.

   I recall hearing that SSD's will only work on certain generation computers.  Just curious, does anyone happen

to know if hybrid hard drives can go further back in time when refurbishing laptops?
