I have been trying to update a W7 64 bit system for over a week and it simply
will not update no matter what I do. I just started yesterday on another one
and it won't  either. Anyone know the magic words to say to get a system to
update other than "Ubuntu"? Cry

It takes a lot to get me frustrated to the point of quitting but this W7 updating lingering
unresolved issue has worn me out. I enjoy helping people but not when I am losing my
sanity and my temper over these infernal updating issues.

I was hoping that post 7/29/16 things would get better but they have not. To quit MRR
or not to quit MRR, that is the question. Frown

Hi Jim,

I have had the same frustrations, and I have solved the problem to my satisfaction. Follow the steps below, and you should be fine;

First of all, download the WSUS offline program for win7 from Microsoft. This includes all the updates. Follow the instructions to use.

Next, if you are doing multiple computers that are the same model, install win7 and activate on one computer.

Install the folder WSUS installer folder on the machine and run the update installer. You may have to restart a few times as there is an install and configure sequence.

Go ahead and install your other programs from www.ninite.com and then you can clone many hard drives with the updates installed on all of them.

A pain to do, but with success. The first drive is always the longest, but cloning a hard drive only takes about 5 minutes.

Good luck.

Thank you Patrick.

I have run the WSUS offline update program and it all seems to run but when I am done
how do you know that the system actually updated? I'm not a software genius / guru
as some are here so I simply go back into windows update and the systems still show
that they have never been updated like you see when you first attempt to update one.

Any thoughts on that kind sir? Smile

Here are two ways I have installed Windows 10 over Win7.  To do either of these you have to have the appropriate Windows 10 install media, which I can get since I am a MSDN subscriber.  At E2D, Inc., we are supplying only Windows 7 at this point, but I have created a Windows 10 Pro x64 image for several of our offerings using these two methods.

1.  Boot the PC from the Windows 10 install media and do an upgrade install.  This preserves everything, including the licensing.  Doing it this way probably ensures you can't roll back to Win7, but it works to preserve all of the relevant (transferable) Windows settings.

2.  Replace the HDD in the Win7 box with a new one, install Windows 10 from the installation media, and use the Win7 license key to authenticate.  This works for Win7 Pro to Win10 Pro.  You can then very easily get back to Win7.

Find a friend who has access to the install media.  I believe that MSDN has already posted the August 2 updates.

Hope this helps.

The WSUS installer folder is about 8 gig in size. You have to be a little patient with it initially. Once it gets past the first few, you will notice that will install updates numbered  up to about 240 more or less, and these are all installed in one foul swoop, and may take a little time.

Has anybody else had success manually installing KB3161608 and then running updates normally? That seems to have done the trick for us, but maybe it is just magical thinking.

We have an issue with a Dell Optiplex 960 where we continue to get a couple of exclamation marks in device manager on a Windows 7 Pro MRR 64bit load.  We’ve done thousands – close to 10,000 actually – 960 units over the years.  Only after the Windows 7 R2 update, it now no longer works.

We can’t find a way to get rid of these 2 driver issues – but ONLY for select units.  It doesn’t happen for all of the 960s.

If anyone has a driver issue for 960 that was troublesome to overcome, hit me back directly.  We have 2 techs that have been scratching their heads for 3 days on this.

We've had the same frustrations. One of the things that we found is that sometimes a simple shutdown (not restart) brings up updates and lets you continue with further updates.

Sean have you tried the FLOSS Snappy Driver Installer? https://sdi-tool.org/ I normally stay far away from driver install tools, but Snappy is one of the few that seems legit. The other thing to make sure is that you've got the Chipset drivers from Dell. You can also look at the devices in Windows and get the vendor ID and device ID for the missing driver Device Manager > Properties of whatever device > switch to the device tab > change the drop down from "device description" to "hardware IDs" > jot down the VEN_XXXX&DEV_XXXX. Google it and you'll get a better ID of what the device is. VEN_XXXX is the vendor ID. VEN_8086 for example is Intel. DEV_XXXX is the device from that particular vendor. The Subsys can be useful for determining exactly what the device is, but often I find it simpler just to search the vendor and device ID. Hope this helps.

Honestly – I think we happened to get a bunch that have some hardware issues – and that’s the end of it.

We bought 50, got 25 working just fine – the rest though – just couldn’t get them to load Windows 7 or Windows 10 without issues.  On the Windows 10 load, we had to disable the NIC – adding an external NIC so it wouldn’t go into a continuous loop.  But yet in Windows 7 – the NIC worked fine – as that is how we downloaded all the drivers.  But even in Windows 7, there were unresolved PCI error codes that we couldn’t resolve.

Anyhow – movin’ on …

It takes a lot to get me frustrated to the point of quitting but this W7 updating lingering

unresolved issue has worn me out. I enjoy helping people but not when I am losing my

Here is another article about Windows Update problems, I have not had opportunity to test this technique, but it looks promising, and the article is being updated as newer methods are discovered.

It involves pre-downloading a number of Windows Updates, and then installing them with the internet connection disabled, then reconnecting and trying the normal windows update again.

Also, Microsoft has announced that they will be doing cumulative updates for Windows 7 and 8.1, similar to how they do one big update each month for Windows 10 instead of a host of little ones. That will probably help for future updates through the supported life of Windows 7.
