to refurbishers

Just thought this info from Harold Mitts, our Microsoft Registered Refurbisher Program representative might be useful to you. it says in the new 2018 RRP Contract that end-users must activate their Windows and/or Office software. However, to make that easier for end-users, refurbishers can preload the 25 digit product key numbers. Here's Harold's explanation and technical directions on how to do that.

Microsoft Registered Refurbisher partners can enter the key so that the end user does not need to. The partner will not need to send the PDF with the product key printed on it if including the key in the installation. The key will not be needed during a reinstallation or recovery as long as the device gets activated using the key. After the key gets injected into the installation, the device is ready for the end user to complete OOBE (out-of-box experience) as normal.

To inject the key into the installation, it can be done in a couple of different ways. Here are some technical directions:

  1. After imaging, boot the device to audit mode
    1. Launch command shell
    2. Navigate to c:\windows\system32
    3. Run slmgr.vbs as follows, replacing the x’s with the 29 character product key, including the hyphens between each 5 characters

                                                               i.      C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

    1. Press enter
    2. Wait for success or error code
    3. Connect to the internet
    4. Run slmgr.vbs as follows, to activate the installation

                                                               i.      C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ato

    1. Press enter
    2. Wait for success or error code
    3. Sysprep the device as normal
    4. Process the device for fulfillment

                                                               i.      Do not capture an image as the device now has a unique key injected into the installation. If you need to capture an image for re-use during deployments, capture an image without injecting a product key

  1. After imaging, boot the device to OOBE
    1. Press shift+f10 at first screen of OOBE to open command shell
    2. Navigate to c:\windows\system32
    3. Run slmgr.vbs as follows, replacing the x’s with the 29 character product key, including the hyphens between each 5 characters

                                                               i.      C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

    1. Press enter
    2. Wait for success or error code
    3. Connect to the internet
    4. Run slmgr.vbs as follows, to activate the installation

                                                               i.      C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ato

    1. Press enter
    2. Wait for success or error code
    3. Shutdown the device by typing the following command

                                                               i.      Shutdown -s -t 0

    1. Process the device for fulfillment

                                                               i.      Do not capture an image as the device now has a unique key injected into the installation. If you need to capture an image for re-use during deployments, capture an image without injecting a product key
