to Refresh Austin Jobs

The University of Texas School of Law is seeking a Web Developer (official title - Sr. Software Developer/Analyst) to join our small team of developers and designers to help us design, implement, and maintain our suite of in-house web applications.

This position deals mostly with back-end development (we are primarily a PHP / Oracle / MySQL shop), but having front-end experience with modern, semantic HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript would be icing on the cake.

A formal job description and directions on how to apply can be found at  https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/hr/jobs/nlogon/151208019358 .  This is for job #151208019358, a full-time position working at the Austin campus of the University of Texas.

  • Actively collaborate with our small team on the design, user experience, and structure of these web applications and our web content management system.
  • Work on multiple facets of the web development stack: from the back-end (database and application layer) to the front-end (template design and client-side JavaScript) with assistance from others on the team.
  • Seek opportunities to improve technical skills, business knowledge, and coding best practices, for personal development as well as to serve as a technical expert able to recommend directions for future development.

Required Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience designing, developing, and implementing web applications with PHP or a PHP framework.

  • Experience working with clients and stakeholders to convert their requirements into technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, a sense of humor, and an ability to work well with others on a small team.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for front-end technologies (HTML5, CSS, Sass, JavaScript) in addition to back-end expertise.
  • Experience with open source web content management systems like WordPress or Drupal, and with developing plugins or themes for those systems.
  • Familiarity with other web application development languages (e.g. Python, NodeJS)
  • Familiarity with Unix-like operating systems and working with command line tools.
  • Comfort with using version control systems like Git, especially in a team setting with multiple collaborators.

  • Demonstrated understanding of responsive web design principles.
  • A passion for web standards, usability, and accessibility best practices.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of Section 508 accessibility law, and ideally familiarity with the requirements of the WCAG 2.0 accessibility guidelines.
  • Comfortable working either independently or closely with collaborators, depending on the nature of the project.
