Hi all,

for a long time now, I've been wanting to set up or find a site similar to
http://freshmeat.net/ (or at least what it used to be) only for artwork,
essays, and other non-software, due to freshmeat.net's natural constraints of
restricting its scope to software.

I had written about it here - http://www.advogato.org/article/529.html -
and recently started working on it here:
https://bitbucket.org/shlomif/web-dir-for-artwork (currently, there's a
functional spec and some other documents).

Now I've been contemplating pursuing this as a potential source of income, in
part because I have been unemployed recently, but lately ran into some
problems. After writing the functional spec, I've thought about using Perl,
which is the language I am best familiar with, and could not decide between its
various web development framework. I was told that using
https://metacpan.org/module/Web::Simple 's Web::Dispatch provides the best
routing so far, which is currently absent from both Catalyst (which is somewhat
baroque), Dancer, and Mojolicious, but not sure I can wait for that. In any
case, this may be a case of implementation paralysis, and I should just pick
one of them and go on from there.

Now I've been introduced to http://fossilbank.wikidot.com/ which seems
nice, but is less structured than the interface I had in mind, and its wiki
syntax seems somewhat confusing.

Anyway, what do you think?

Regards,

Hey Shlomi,

I read through the things that you linked to. Would it be fair to say that you're trying to set up a Wikimedia Commons/Github style of site, with version control, previews of images and sounds and so on? I think that sounds great, and synergises nicely with the FOSsil Bank which I see as more of a 'Wikipedia' that links to content hosted elsewhere.

Might be useful to take this question to the Free Culture Reddit,

Cheers,

No, that's not my intention. My intention is exactly to create a
Freecode.com-like site (Freecode was previously known as Freshmeat - see:
http://freecode.com/ , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freecode ) only for
non-software works, such as fiction, essays, films, albums, etc.

I think there are plenty of resources available for hosting such works
(including as you say, GitHub or Wikia or whatever), but naturally, providing
hosting or backup to such works may prove to be a useful extra source of
income.

My intention with the Web Art Directory is to also link to content hosted
elsewhere, but as opposed to FOSsil bank:

1. The UI will be somewhat more structured and less freeform.

2. There will be comments and ratings and like buttons, etc.

3. There will be a newsfeed of "releases" or updates of these work, as they are
done (contributed by the user).

4. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freecode for possibly more information.

Naturally, I'm planning to also provide APIs for accessing the data, and to
hopefully provide dumps (similar to Wikipedia) of the entire content. As
opposed to Wikipedia, I will make sure that the markup will be available in a
regular language that is easy for machines to parse.

OK, I will consider it.

Ah, that Wikipedia article made it a lot clearer for me: thanks.

Let me know if I can help in some way. I can get you the raw data for the FOSsil Bank if there'd be some way to convert that.

You're welcome.

Well, right now there isn't a lot in the repository except for a skeleton for a
Perl/Dancer application which does nothing useful (it was auto-generated), and
some planning/design documents. I'd like to start working on the code, but I
keep getting distracted.

Regarding the FOSsil Bank data - thanks! That would be appreciated. I see it is
under CC-by 3.0. Very nice. Can you tell me what format it is stored under and
if it is easy to parse and/or structured? Perhaps I can use it as initial data
to jumpstart the site. But I guess I'll wait for when the first live version of
the site will be online to import the final data from FOSsil Bank, so you can
continue to work on FOSsil Bank, if and until my site is ready.

Hi Shlomi,

The site is under a CC BY licence, although 99% of the contributions are by me and I'm happy to relicense those under CC0 if you'd like.

I've attached the site source code so you can check it out for yourself. It's not in very accessible form, but if you open up one of the TXT entries for a source or work you'll see that all the data is entered after certain key terms (e.g. "intro: [Introductory text here], url: [URL here]". One weird thing is that the backup doesn't seem to store the titles of the pages where they differ from the unique locator for the page.

Cheers,

CC-By should be fine.

Thanks for sending it. I'll take a look. Too bad I'm getting so distracted with
lots of other projects (I've got too much I want to do, and that is while still
being unemployed).

I should note that since my idea of a web art directory will be commercial,
I've been contemplating putting the data (a lot of it will be user
contributed) under CC-by-sa instead of CC-by, so if someone reuses it, it will
remain under the same licence, and accessible to us. But I'm not yet sure
about it.
