No, absolutely not! The more I look into issues on both sides, I'm
ready to stick with oil until something better "actually" comes along
for the long haul. Electric is going to be expensive. And for that
matter totally senseless, economically speaking, To trade a vehicle that
has lots of life left in it for one that is going to be expensive to
purchase. Kinda like those people that run for the dealerships to buy a
compact car for better gas mileage and and pay more for the vehicle than
get in fuel savings.

Basic economics, Lew.

The reason there are no viable alternative energy systems is simply
that they can't compete at $4 a gallon of gasoline.

$4 gas is cheaper

Maybe they can compete at $10 a gallon for gas.

But that pins energy at he $10 a gallon level.

It won't bring the price of alternative energy down.

Check the prices for natural gas for the truck market.

They already beat diesel and provides a "bridge" fuel to reduced
carbon
dumping into the air we all breathe.

The price of electric vehicles continue to drop and will be more
attractive
as alternate sources of electrical generation continue to come on
line.

There are already hydrogen fueling stations here in California that
allow you
to drive the entire length of California in a fuel cell powered
vehicle.

There is no question that energy costs will continue to rise, but what
is the
cost of climate change we are beginning to experience as a result of
excessive use of fossil fuels?

Stop the federal subsidies for fossil fuels and see how long $4/gallon
gasoline lasts.

Off shore wind and hydro offer significant opportunities.

Now that Ted Kennedy is gone, expect the windmill off Cape Cod to
finally
get installed and become operative.

Yes this problem will be solved and as with most tough problems,
California will take the lead in solving it.

The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail.
A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor's dog, then bites the
Governor.

The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie
"Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only
doing what is natural.

He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills
the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.

 He
calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State
$200 testing it for diseases.

The Governor goes to hospital and spends
$3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his
bite wound bandaged.

The running trail gets shut down for 6 months
while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is
now free of dangerous animals.

The Governor spends $50,000 in state
funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the
area.

The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better
treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the
world.

The Governor's security agent is put on administrative leave with full
pay for 6 months for not stopping the attack. The state spends $150,000
to hire and train a new agent with additional special training re the
nature of coyotes.

PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a
$5 million suit against the state.

Actually in the last many years that explanation no longer holds water.
There is a good supply and relatively low demand.

What drives gasoline prices now is "what the market will bare".

I cab buy upper tier gasoline from Chevron at 2.87 and one block north
pay 3.09 at Exxon a lower tier station.

Gasoline prices are pretty much set at what a particular station thinks
it can or wants to charge.

I have a smart phone app that shows local gasoline prices and the prices
differ greatly within a few miles even among the same brands.

<http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2014/02/11/here-how-much-need-to-make-to-afford-new-car/?intcmp=obnetwork>

short quote:
If your entire net worth is $100,000, and you put $30,000 of it into a
vehicle that will lose 60% of its value, you’re just being financially
and mathematically stupid. Your income is your largest and most powerful
wealth-building tool. If you’re buying things that go the wrong way in
terms of value, you’re not gaining wealth; you’re losing wealth.

There’s really nothing special about $1 million. I could have said $2
million or $900,000, but $1 million is easy to remember. Plus, it’s
nothing to sneeze at in terms of an individual’s net worth. When you
lose a lot, and it’s a small percentage of a lot, you don’t have to
worry so much. But when you lose a lot and you didn’t have much to begin
with, that’s a recipe for financial disaster!

By "differ greatly" you probably mean plus or minus 10%. Price
differences in other "staples" such as food and clothing can very MUCH
more than that. When the difference in gas prices is plus or minus 30%,
y'all let us know.

I'm not sure where you were going with that. I was pointing out that
supply and demand is not what is causing the relatively wide fluctuation
in prices in "gasoline" within a one mile radius.

When I say differ greatly, I mean for example you can go one mile west
to the Chevron station and pay 22 cents per gallon less than if you one
mile east to the Exxon station. Which way are you going to go??
In that example it is all about how much are you willing to pay.

Obviously, some are willing to pay more to buy *there*. By the same

Do the prices at Exxon go up and down with the prices at Chevron? If

Ivanpah thermal solar project comes on line.

Three year construction in Mojave desert comes on line.

Will supply power for 140,000 homes in SoCal.

Replaces San Onofre nuclear facility taken off line.

Reduces CO2 emissions by 400,000 tons annually.

We are gaining on it.

Google < Ivanpah thermal solar project > for more info.

BTW, "Ivanpah" is a town near where project is located.

There is a problem with solar panels though Lew, because they absorb so
much sun, they heat up the area.

So all the windmills affected the wind currents.
The solar panels will affect the temperatures.
There's no free lunch. I too am concious of the energy problems, and
waste problems we have. I had read about the super collectors where
mirrors focus the light and follow the sun, that also has problems.
Then there is the current GE commercial showing harnessing the ocean,
that too if built in big farms will have major issues. Imagine that
effecting the ocean currents, or chopping whales in half that venture
too close...
Many options in moderation might be the answer, but no single method
will wind up providing the answer, and thats the problem.

Fuel cells... it's expensive to break up water into hyrdrogen and
oxygen. It requires high amounts of electricty..
NO FREE LUNCH.. not today.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Who said anything about a FREE LUNCH?

Remember Newton?

"For any action there is an equal but opposite reaction", comes to
mind.

Any new technology brings new problems with it.

Solving those problems is what R & D is all about.

Existing coal fired generation has/had lots of problems, (I spent a
major part of my under graduate years studying them) but
federal tax credits helped pay for the development of solutions
many of whom were never implemented because the utilities
didn't want to pay for them.

For years the oil industry received a 27% annual depletion
allowance on existing wells to help pay for continued exploration.

These industries no longer need to receive these tax gifts, it's time
to invest in new energy sources.

Ivanpah is a solar/thermal project as you have read about.

There are over 350,000 computer controlled reflective mirrors
which re-direct the suns rays back to collector towers that heat
water into steam which drives steam turbines that in turn drive
the electrical generations.

Sure there are going to be problems, but they will be solved.

One of the biggest obstacles to overcome was financing.

If it had not been for the federal gov't backing a $1.6 billion
construction loan, the project would never have gotten off the
ground.

Fossil, fuels as we know them, are history.

We can't not continue to pollute our environment.

The sooner we devote ourselves, much like we did
to the space program, the sooner we solve the problem.

We are all in this together, whether we like it or not.

Chalk the "cash for clunkers" program up to the oil company lawyers.

It was the cheapest way to get pollution credits.

Another choice was to buy a pollution generating business and close
it down and use the credits purchased to offset refinery pollution.

It was a way to get a lot of "dirty" businesses shut down and junk
cars off the street.

What the lefties don't like to discuss is that cleaning up the
atmosphere causes more heat to reach the oceans, melting ice and causing
stronger and more numerous hurricanes.

What the lefties don't like to discuss is the history of the climate vs.
the recent past that they seem to focus on more than anything..

No, the rule of supply and demand is when the supply is limited or the
demand goes up the price goes up. We have neither.

Two different places with in walking distance of each other with a price
fluctuation of 10% is simply charging what the market will bare.

Absolutely not! I have seen the Exxon prices go up and the Chevron
prices go down and visa verse, but the Chevron station is always 20+
cents less expensive than the Exxon station. None of the gasoline
prices in the Houston metro area go up and down at the same time or in
the same direction. The stations have plenty of play in their pricing
strategies.

Exactly and if supply and demand was driving the prices the prices would

Yes we do, in fact. You have a limitation on real estate. People are

People are also brand sensitive (for several reasons). Supply and

I understand what you are saying here but the Houston market is
apparently different. The stations in the comparison are pretty much
the same in terms of convenience. Both stations have to be passed at
one of the main entrances to enter the large community. The other
entrance has not stations. So both are passed when entering or exiting
the community from that particular entrance. The upper tier Chevron
station, the one with the better gasolines is always significantly less
expensive than the less desirable Exxon. Neither stations pricing is a
predictor of what the other station pricing is going to do when going up
or down. And again it is not unusual to see a 30 cent price difference
between the stations and the higher price station is typically in line
with the average pricing in the general area.

Both stations offer a convenience store and naturally the less expensive
station has a load oc cars pumping gas. Now yesterday when I filled up
there was only a 10 cent difference, last week there was a 28 cent
difference.

Now if you still think that supply and demand is the driving factor for
the pricing I'll let you be satisfied by that. But It is apparent that
there is a wide difference in pricing so profit margins are greater than
one might think since many stations follow their competitors lead in
raising or lowering prices. So I see that the higher price station is
simply charging more because he wants to make more profit per gallon.

And FWIW, I have seen SAME BRAND stations with in a block of each other
on the same street have a 10 price difference. The only convenience
difference is that the lower price station is easier to afford.

The price differential between different stations in the same region is
where the "supply and demand" argument becomes totally inoperative/bullshit.

Not to mention, when the company raises the price +.10/gallon from
morning to afternoon, as they often do, the unsold gas in the ground
tanks, presumably bought at a "supply and demand" price that would
insure adequate profit/margins, is now worth .10/gallon more to that
profit/margin.

The old argument that this is justifiable because they will have to pay
more to refill the tanks is bullshit. Whatever they pay for the next
tanker load already has their margin/profit built-in to the price the
consumers will pay.

Local/regional prices do have a "supply and demand" component regarding
product price to the consumer, but it certainly nowhere near the
magnitude some would have you believe.

This is one business that operates under one basic, guiding principle,
and one principle only ... "Charge what the traffic will bear".

Right, but its price must then move around with everyone else's.
Supply/demand is part of the cost. Convenience, marketing, or
something other than "gasoline" is making that brand a premium, there.
Supply and demand is *not* suspended.

An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial components in a
phrase or a word. These components may be individual letters (as in
laser) or parts of words (as in Benelux and Ameslan). There is no
universal agreement on the precise definition of various names for such
abbreviations (see nomenclature) nor on written usage (see orthographic
styling). In English and most other languages, such abbreviations
historically had limited use, but they became much more common in the
20th century. Acronyms are a type of word formation process, and they
are viewed as a subtype of blending.

Not quite. Abbreviations are formed by the initial letters of a
phrase. An Acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounceable. If the
abbreviation isn't pronounceable, it's also called an "initialism".

"LASER" is an acronym (though "laser" has been promoted into a word).
"NSA" is an abbreviation or "initialism".

Yes, "LASER" was an acronym that has been promoted into the word
"laser", but that isn't all that common. For the most part, acronyms
don't live long enough in common usage.
