New Bed Job

Well I started a new bed job today. This one will be another with the
storage under the mattress platform, 18 drawers this time. the last
only had 9 drawers. This will be the fourth bed I have built like this
in the last 6 years.

This bed will not be stained but will be built with white oak and
walnut. The main components in the base that the drawers will fit
between will again be MDO. I love that stuff, no tear out, less chance
of splintering and the material tends to stay very flat.

Would you like a copy of the drawing file? I can e-mail it. But all
details are not there. Enough to build it but methods of attachment and
types of joints are not drawn.

It does sound complicated does it not. LOL Really only 6 pairs of race
ways. Yeah, almost 100 pieces for the drawers and 56 pieces for the
exposed drawer fronts and handles and that does not include Domino's to
reinforce the corners of the drawers, 8 of those on each drawer.

Essentially it has to come apart. Head and foot boards will unbolt from
the bottom base drawer unit. The platform, that the mattress will rest
on, comes off in two pieces, and all the drawers come out.

The base drawer unit stands up right on the drawer opening side and will
go through a door opening, it is 77' tall in that orientation and right
at 81" long foot to head and 18.25" high.

I think it's more about long it takes me to do simple builds vs. you
cranking out masterpieces like clockwork.

I told her that all I need is a 3 car garage, some green tools and
one less full time job. ;-)

The base unit is mostly pocket hole screws to attach the large MDO panels
to the face frames on each side. Dominos for both face frames assembly.
All bracing and tracks are attached to the MDO panels with screws.

The drawer rabbit joints will be reinforced with through domino tenons, 8
for each drawer.

Outer drawer fronts rails and stiles will use stub tenons on the rails into
groves on the stiles.

The head and food boards will have stub tenons into groves on the majority
of pieces with Domino's and screws to attach the legs to the mid panels.

Well I will admit I probably waste a lot of time and if I spent 8 hours
a day working I could do it at least twice as fast. I spend a lot of
time waiting for the 2~3 coats of stain/varnish to dry so I lose a lot
of days with that process. I try my best to prefinish before assembly
and that can happen 2~3 times during a build and adding a couple of
weeks or more of simply waiting for the finish to dry between coats.

That is a start. ;~) It used to take me months on end, sometime a year
or so to finish a project when I was in your shoes. Hang in there!

She was impressed with all the quilts. My wife does them by hand for
each grandchild.

Anyhow, at the end I showed her your new bed design. Guess you're
going to need a nice new dump truck, as she said you must get a ton of
money for one of those. :)

Well actually we do not have any grand children yet. That little girl
is something. She is a neighbors grand daughter. She is 9 or 10 and is
getting into sewing, plays the violin, and this past weekend she moved
up to spot 35 in the top 100 all around gymnasts in her age group in the
country.

My wife started there about 15 years ago. She has been machine quilting
for about 13 years and gets lots of work from the ladies that do not
want to quilt their tops.

Well I'm not cheap but my customers do not hesitate or balk at my prices.
