How many have you seen?
Good/bad list?

I think it's sort of "difficult" list with some personality since the
average is only 67/250 currently.

Isn't there too much Hollywood in there? Don't you watch European, Asian, South American movies? Where are the Finnish movies? Shouldnt you be listing some Scandinavian movies? I didn't even see many Aussie or Kiwi movies in there?

Predator 2??? WTF!

I've seen at least 115 of those. Others it's been too long to be sure. Lots of quality films there, and of course a sprinkling of some I hate too.

Maybe he meant it as a list of top *favorite* films rather than ones he believes are necessarily among the best.

Yeah a distinction has to be made. There are guilty pleasures for everyone. He should have made it clear he is listing his favorites including guilty pleasures.

Nope

I do.

There are two Finnish films:

The Unknown Soldier (1955), which is the definite Finnish WW2 film. The
problem with it though is (according to IMDB) that the brilliance of it
may be hard to understand for non-Finns. I could have of course included
many Finnish films but I don't think that'd be much fun for people
around the world who check the list, seeing obscure titles they never
heard of and can't even find them on internet/torrent.

The other Finnish film I included is Aki Kaurismäki's "Shadows in
Paradise" (1986) which has gotten some international recognition, and is
pretty funny in its absurdity.

There are also two Swedish films:
Bergman's "Persona" plus "Elvira Madigan"

There's a bunch of "foreign" films around #200 or so. Plus Japanese and
Soviet films sprinkled here and there.

> I didn't even see many Aussie or Kiwi movies in there?

Indeed. Could have included Dead Calm, Romper Stomper or Dark City.
They'd certainly make my top 500.
For Kiwi movies only great one I can think of right now is "Once Were
Warriors (1994)" which I have at 8.

Nearly put "The Quiet Earth (1985)" in. I think I have LOTR series rated
as 7, which is not enough for top 250.

> Predator 2??? WTF!
>

:)

I'm one of those people who always liked Predator 2 more for some
reason. Gotta have a Predator in the list. If it was top 500 I'd have
both 1 and 2.

I like about 90 percent of those I've seen. Among those I disagree with...

Four of them star the overrated runt, Dustin Hoffman.
"Tootsie," "Rain Man," "Kramer vs. Kramer," "Family Business."

Also two with the Cruiseman (not including "Rain Man"): "Top Gun" (surprise, surprise) and "A Few Good Men."

As much as I like Eastwood films, I can't see any "Every Which Way" orangutan movie making a "top" list.

"Ferris Bueller"...I'll never get it. Annoying teen film with Mickey Mouse Matthew Broderick. "Glory" with Mickey Mouse also not so great.

"The Revenant"--a beautiful cinematic spectacle that is overlong, somewhat empty, and stars a scowling, cheese-headed, eternal 15-year-old with his face hidden in a mask of fuzz that probably took two years to grow.

"Big"--nice little light comedy that doesn't stand the test of time so well.

"Star Trek: The Motion Picture"--well I'm a real Trek fan and it's not really Trek.

"War of the Roses"--aside from being personally repellent to me, I don't get its rep at all.

And the worst offender of all, "Dances With Wolves," the very definition of formulaic, hackneyed Hollywood horseshit that even gorgeous cinematography and Kevin Costner's killer acting chops can't salvage.

But that said, 90% agreement is quite good!

LOL @ the following for your top 250 list:

War Games
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

3 dumb overrated movies for adolescents.

Star Wars flicks
The Empire Strikes Back
The Terminator movies (being dragged to the cinema to see those when I was a lot younger was bad enough. NO way I could watch them today.)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
First Blood (are you kidding?)
Predator 2
The Matrix
Pulp Fiction

I guess it's true that little boys grow up to be little boys?

Airplane (????) Come on!
Duel (one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen.)
Groundhog Day(good but top 250?)
Falling Down(not terrible but top 250?)
Foul Play (that pick must be a joke)
A Clockwork Orange (I hated it)

A Few Good Men
Top Gun (two overblown Hollywood Tom Cruise movies)

Elmer Gantry (bored me to tears)

But other than those ridiculous movies you have some good titles.

I did a fast count and I think I've seen 85?

I saw "Sully" (2016) on the weekend. It's not a riveting drama by any means, some of the dialogue is silly and it's bland bordering on dull in parts but it's a feel-good story about a real life hero. Probably the best thing about the movie was Tom Hanks who gives a nice low-key performance. Hanks is the go-to actor these days if you want a humble hero. Clint Eastwood keeps it simple and non-flashy trying to focus on Sully as a hero and what obstacles he had to face in the aftermath of the crash(i.e. post-traumatic stress disorder and an intense investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.)

Bottom line: Not outstanding or remarkable but it has its good moments/points.

P.S. I can't believe Clint Eastwood is 86 and still going strong directing these movies. If only everybody could be that productive at that age.

132/250. It's an interesting list that covers the spectrum. I like how you're not afraid of including what others would probably classify as junk. That's actually good and shows off a bit of your character. Walk with kings nor lose the common touch.

I agree with TT about "War of the Roses." It's one of the best black comedy films out there IMO.

I don't hate "Glory," just don't think it's so great. It was one of Denzel's best performances and same with the Magical Negro.

That's one we'll never agree on. I see a story built a standard Hollywood template we've seen in countless films (and you know what some of them are). Characters are cut-outs and relationships superficial. Really painful depictions of "noble savage" Indians tailored for PC sensibilities while insulting those same Indians with their homogeneity. Virtually all Indians good, all whites bad except Costner's character because he's "enlightened" and transcends the evil American mores of his time. Wolf metaphor hits the audience on the head with a mallet repeatedly in case they don't get it the first time. Just pap. Disgusting phony Hollywood pap that was predictably and undeservedly rewarded for zero effort at originality. Little of value in it apart from the cinematography.

But if you like it, that's cool too. ;)

...It's true that I may like them less now, but that doesn't mean
they're worse than they were back then. It's just that I have changed,
not the films - they are still GREAT films for the intended audience.
Star Wars is still 2nd most watched film ever in US cinema (3rd
worldwide). On my list it is currently MOST seen title with 89% check.

So I don't intend to drop Star Wars from my list EVER, no matter what I
think about it at the moment or later on. It fully deserves its status
as the most entertaining and legendary fantasy film ever made... It is
cinema in its purest form. What changes though with age is adding more
and more mature titles in the list... I'm sure you'll find a bunch
there, if you don't then I can help you. But if I like "adult" films for
mature taste, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate less mature ones as
well, the ones I loved when a bit younger.

Wow, didn't realize I have 8 Hoffmans there. And there are still at
least 3 titles which are close (Straight time, all the president's men,
straw dogs).

I reckon I also have a "few" Newman and Eastwood films... (8 Newman, 11
Eastwood) They never were in same film.

No Theron, Watts or Blanchett.

Yes, I think most haven't even heard about it. The boxing scenes are not
that bad in "every which way..." either, with "Tank Murdoch" etc.

I read that when filming "Hard Times," Bronson (who was in his 50s at the time) couldn't fight for more than 30 seconds at a time because he was a smoker. Doesn't show with the editing of course. IMO those bare-knuckle street boxing scenes look very realistic, including the clinches, pushes, and other maneuvers. Bronson looked suitably lean and mean for the era. Then there's Coburn and Strother Martin for support. Just a nice, tightly-wound little film.

Sometimes I get it confused with "The Sting" and remember Redford as the one that adopted the cat. :)

since you're on films, michael moore at it again:
<Some states have made it ‘illegal’ for you to vote any other way than
for Trump,” Moore wrote. “If you don’t vote for him, your state will
fine you $1,000. So here’s my offer to you, I obviously can’t and
won’t give you money to vote tomorrow, but if you do vote your
conscience and you are punished for it, I will personally pay your
fine which is my legal right to do.”>

Teaser trailer for new Blade Runner...

Can't believe they picked clowns like Gosling and Leto as main leads.
