Intriguing film, albeit the main theme relating to how time perception is affected by
a language seems a trifle unlikely....the language of the universe perhaps? Nonetheless
a film NOT littered with pointless action scenes but rather subtle, emotionally thought
provoking scenes?

Thoughts?

Haven't seen it yet (not even released in Finland yet) but definitely a
sci-fi film which I want to see.

IMDB has it at 8,4 currently. (will drop)
Tomatoes 93% liked it
Metacritic 81

Not that having Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner would promise unforgettable
performances. Not that convinced on Villeneuve either.

How does it compare to "Contact"? Imitation Game? Close Encounters of
the Third Kind? Interstellar?

Villeneuve directed "Enemy." Thus he can do no wrong (at least until the "Blade Runner" sequel).

We know...

And Amy Adams starred in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". Thus she
can do no... never mind...

No, Amy gets "can do no wrong" credit from another of your faves: "American Hustle"!

Jeremy Renner, however, *can* do wrong. He annoyed Court 1 in "The Immigrant," cancelling out his "American Hustle" credit.

Did Renner have a two second pause, Broadway style?

It may in fact have been one of those two-second pauses that did it. You'd think these actors would learn from their predecessors' lethal errors.

I don't even recall Renner's performance in "American Hustle", a movie which I liked. That's how much his performance mattered for me. I thought Renner was badly miscast for "The Immigrant." He's not leading man material for a romance that's for sure. As for most of the movies he's done in the past few years, I haven't seen them. I have no interest in watching stupid movies like Mission Impossible 5 or the Avengers series.

Look at you getting all defensive about a small critique of an actor's performance in a movie. Were you an investor in the movie or something? *rolls eyes*

Watch the movie again and you'll now be cognizant of what I'm talking about. It may not bother you but it slightly distracted me. For me those pronounced actions by Laurie's character should have been edited out. If they were, her performance would have been better IMO. The best performance in that movie was by George C. Scott IMO.

I agree with the part about Scott. He had intense screen presence and delivered every line with precision. The Piper Laurie interview about him was interesting. Seems she was genuinely afraid of Scott at the time because of his reputation. Their only interaction was in scenes they did together.

She was probably afraid he'd beat the shit out of her like he did to Ava Gardner and the other women he had relationships with.

Yes, that seemed to be her state of mind. A little bit too "method" even for a Method actress. I read that after one incident with Scott, Gardner called Sinatra and he had some of his "associates" pick her up. Amazing that Scott came out of it alive and in one piece.

I wouldn't care for the Avengers or any super hero movie. But I did see Mission Impossible 5. It way way better than any of the prequels. And the girl (Rebecca Ferguson) kicked ass. Mission Impossible 4 is rated high but I did not like it. Mission Impossible 2 was probably the worst. Mission Impossible 3 was okay better than 4 I think. I don't remember much of 1.

I just read his wiki page and there was this anecdote:

A famous anecdote relates that one of his stage costars, Maureen Stapleton, told the director of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, "I don't know what to do — I'm scared of him." The director, Mike Nichols, replied, "My dear, everyone is scared of George C. Scott."[16]

END

:)) Looks like he was a scary guy to most people who worked with him.

According to Piper Laurie, he mellowed later in life...

"Laurie 'didn’t set eyes on him' for almost three decades after “The Hustler,” but when she did, in 1990, Scott gave her an enormous bear hug and picked her up in the air. He had given up drinking; the personality that Laurie now got to know was 'caring, warm, funny and charming.'”

I see. Was Renner nominated for any award for his performance? The movie was nominated and won a zillion awards. Renner wasn't included at all. I'm not only talking about the Oscars, I'm talking about the Globes, BAFTA, SAG, and many other awards. The stand-outs were Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Cooper, Amy Adams. When I think about that movie Renner's performance is not the one I think about (although it may have been a good performance.)

I love Mission Impossible movies and the Avengers, they rule! much better than most boring arthouse movies. The first 1 was excellent, haven't really watched 2, but from what I saw it wasn't as good as the rest.

The most recent MI was a good one, certainly memorable because of the Ilsa Faust character.

i don't care what the awards show says.

renner had a smaller role of course.
