um, you know you shouldn't put yourself in the posistion to live check to

the market lost about 2 to 3% of it's value.

in 1987 (much worse) the market lost 25% of it's value.

That would be true if a person is *able* to put away something every
pay period. That's increasingly not happening because of rising costs.

If you try reading the whole thing, it's quite clear that it's rent,
food and heat that are sucking up people's savings.

I realize it's hard to let go of the whole "Cadillac Welfare Queen"

Here's all we need to read:

"And 7-Eleven says its grocery sales have jumped 12-13 percent over the past
year, compared with only slight increases for non-necessities like gloves
and toys. Shoppers can't afford to load up at the supermarket and are going
to the most convenient places to buy emergency food items like milk and
eggs."

So Americans are sooooo poor that they are buying $3.99 milk at 7-11 instead
of $3.29 milk down at the MegaMart? Yeah, makes perfect sense...

If the 7-11 is the only place in your neighbourhood that sells milk and
groceries, and you can't easily get to another neighbourhood that has a
MegaMart, well, then, yes, you will be buying $3.99 milk.....

This is a fucking post to a news group, not a great work of literature. If

Milk here at Winn Dixie is $4.50 a gallon.
At the La Express (7-11 type quick-e-mart) milk is $3.75 a gallon.

I use milk in cooking and every now and then on cereal so I buy it at
the La Express.

They're called CONVENIENCE stores for a reason.

If the 7/11 is down the block but the MegaMart is 5 miles away, it's
probably cheaper to buy local.

Agreed. And this does nothing to prove the point of the article. If people
were truly poor they'd do without the milk until the once a week shopping
excursion "into town". Instead they're willingly dropping the extra 50¢ or
$1 for "emergency" supplies.

The occasional time when you're caught short? Sure. But if you do most of
your grocery shopping at the convenience store then you either deserve to be
poor, or you have enough money to not have to worry about nickels and dimes.

Let's just keep lowering the bar of what "poor" means until nobody in
America meets the criteria. That's almost as good as admitting that
poverty is a problem in this country, and a lot less work!
