FRANKFURT GALAXY UPDATE - Issue 01/96
======================================

*** A word from the editor

Hello WLAF fans!

It took some time to put this issue of the Galaxy update together,
mostly because the news came only sporadic to my attention.
Unfortunatly the football monthly i took most of my informations from
seems to have disappeared, but on the other hand a football weekly has
appeared on my newsstand in January and the official "Galaxy
Newsletter" dropped into my postbox shortly after i renewed my season
ticket. (In case you want to meet me at a Galaxy home game, just send
me a short notice to: ku...@Uni-Mainz.DE, and we will arrange something.)

Now what are the prospects for the Galaxy in the coming season?

SuperBowl XXX is history now, and the performance of Pittsburghs QB
should convince the coaching staff to send Jim Miller back to the
Galaxy to gain some more playing time. And from what i heared, the
Indianapolis coaching staff was pleased with what they saw from Paul
Justin, so it seems reasonable to expect him back. Since many of last
years leading players are bound to return, it looks like Coach
Stautner will have an experienced and familiar foundation of players
on which he can build the 1996 Galaxy. But all depends on the college
draft and the NFL allocation. From last seasons results we can surely
be confident in the Galaxy staff to pick the right players, but what
the NFL teams will do is not so sure. As i said earlier, the signs
are good for a return of Paul and Jim, let's hope this comes
true. BTW: Bobby Olive is also on the Colts roster and a possible
subject to NFL allocation, just like Kipp Vickers.

Yours,
Dominik Kubla

*** Key players of last season sign preliminary contracts

Several players, including some key players, have already signed
preliminary contracts with the Galaxy organisation:

* Cecil Doggette, CB
* Nate 'Crazy Legs' Bolton, RB
* Chris Hall, CB
* Brad Bretz, QB
* David Wilkins, DE
* Toby Mills, C
* Tom Cavallo, LB
* Tony Harrison, WR
* Sean Lawlor, WR
* Norm Brown,
* Justin Starck, T

The return of Brad Bretz and Nate Bolton should promise good offensive
performance and Chris Hall, co-leader in interceptions in 1995, is
already a huge danger sign for the other teams.

*** National players for next season announced

The Galaxy has announced the names of the national players for next
season. They are:

* Martin Driever, TE
* Johannes Harisch, DL
* Werner Hippler, TE
* Ralf Kleinmann, K/P
* Daniel Könner, WR
* Frank Messmer, LB
* Ingo Seibert, RB

Martin Driever marked a unique record in 1995 for a european player in
winning three championships in one year: World Bowl, EuroBowl
(european championship for club teams) and German Bowl (german
national championship).

Ingo Seibert wrote history as the first national player to score a TD
and Werner Hippler marked two in Barcelona to help the Galaxy reach
the WorldBowl. Ralf Kleinmann has proven himself to be a reliable
place kicker, while Frank Messmer was the only national player to
achieve a QB sack.

The two new-comers will replace G/T Olaf Hampel and RB Markus Finke in
the lineup, who will both play for the Rhein Fire.

*** Two Galaxy QB's reach the AFC championship game

With Jim Miller, Pittsburgh, and Paul Justin, Indianapolis, both of
Galaxy's starting QB's of last season have reached the AFC
championship game with their team. This means that one Galaxy QB will
reach the SuperBowl for sure.

Here are their regular season numbers (None of them reached the
required 224 passing attempts):

Att. Yds % Avg TD TD% INT INT% lg. Sacks Rate
Miller 32/56 397 57.1 7.09 2 3.6 5 8.9 42t 2/8 53.9
Justin 20/36 212 55.6 5.89 0 0.0 2 5.6 20 3/22 49.8

And just for comparison, here are the numbers of two other WLAF QB's:

Att Yds Pct Avg TD Pct INT Pct Lg Sacks Rate
Weldon (Tampa Bay) 42/91 519 46.2 5.70 1 1.1 2 2.2 40 9/55 58.8
Furrer (Houston) 48/99 483 48.5 4.88 2 2.0 7 7.1 48 5/35 40.1

*** Former Galaxy player wins european bobsleigh championship

Olaf Hampel, former Galaxy G/T and now with Rhein Fire, has won the
european bobsleigh championship together with his pilot Christoph
Langen. They won both the 2- and 4-men championships in St. Moritz,
Switzerland. In the 4-men competition the team set a new all-time
record for the starting time: 4.88 sec. It was the first time ever
that a team has beaten the 4.90 sec mark on the natural icechannel of
St. Moritz.

*** Galaxy has a new offensive coordinator

The Galaxy announced Thomas Coleman to fill the vacant spot as
offensive coordinator. Guy Benjamin, who should have taken over from
last years OC Joe Clark, signed with the University of Hawaii instead.
Coleman was member of the coaching staff of the Sacramento State
Hornets from 1984-89 and worked with Bill Walsh in his "QB Development
Camp" 1993/94. Last year he was affiliated with the Minnesota Vikings
organisation.

*** Galaxy player wins SuperBowl XXX

DB Greg Briggs has won the SuperBowl XXX as member of the Dallas
Cowboys. That makes him just the second to win both SuperBowl and
WorldBowl. The other one is Dedrick Dodge (WB91: London Monarchs,
SB94: S.F 49ers).

*** Already over 7000 season tickets sold

The Galaxy has already sold over 7000 season tickets. This matches
last years sales until actual start of the season, but is still short
of the over 25,000 tickets sold in 1992.
