when I think of Rio I don't even think of infrastructure or anything
typically city-like. I just think of nice asses with thong floss
running up the cracks. And that's just the guys.

Probably about time S. America gets them. It would also make it more
likely I'd actually consider going.

Rio is beautiful, but does it have the facilities (or does Brazil have
the money?) to manage it? My image of the city is that it's a small
rich area surrounded by a lot of slums.

My understanding is that most of the facilities it will use are
already in place.

Interestingly, Brazil will also be hosting the World Cup in 2014.

Me too, since South America is long overdue, but how will they
handle the fact that our summertime is winter in Rio? How did the
Australians handle it when they had the Olympics? Did they change the
month?

Yes. Sydney was in late September. Melbourne was even later--around
December.

Brazil has buttloads of money...it's just not very evenly
distributed. I can see some really heavy security to prevent
kidnappings. Or maybe they'll just hire the gangs to police everything.

It's official.

Rio wins.

I did some checking, and apparently at only 22 degrees latitude,
the temperatures in Rio don't vary much at all during the year:

If anything, August will have slightly cooler temperatures that
should be ideal.

"Winter" is relative.....winter in Australia, South Africa or Brazil
is not the same as Winter in Minnesota or Denver.

Yay! Events in a comparable time zone. But if NBC still has the
rights they'll probably still just show everything tape delayed just
for their sanitized packaging.

I spent my 21'st birthday in Rio and my friends knew it so they made
sure it was memorable. However I don't remember a lot of it.

Being a tropical city means the events can be held during the NH summer
months if they so desire.

Which is how Olympics should be managed.

If true, they should pay the US the $35 billion we gave them a decade
ago to shore up their dollar. We could use it back.
