How many 6AU6 and 12SN7 vacuum tubes would it taken to make a circa
1940s cell phone? Just kidding.
One reason the USA was a little late getting into cellular is because
the Bell System backbone that was put in place during regulatory times
was the most advanced reliable peer to peer network ever developed. You
could get a cheap phone line installed here in a few days. When I was in
Israel in 1989 people used to sign up their young children for phone
service because it took years to get it. Same with a lot of other
developed countries. When cellular became really technically feasible
those countries got into it because of their poor telephone networks.
