I was wondering the same thing, Paul. I was looking forward to checking out the
standings last night (Saturday) and was bummed. On a different note, I have a
general question for the group. Is four rounds really enough golf for a
tournament of this magnitude? I understand the organizers are setting up the
USDGC in similar fashion to ball golf events with one round a day and tee
times. Great. I have no problem with this. But six rounds seems to be a better
number, especially if the USDGC is to be billed as disc golf's second "major."
Thoughts?

And how about the words: legitimate par. I heard there was an
established par of 64 (witch included two par 5 holes of over 1000') for
the course used for this event. Anyone know how they established this
number? Was it strictly obective (distance)? Did they take into
consideration subjective criteria (water, trees, elevation change)?
A legitimate par needs to be established in disc golf. When someone says
they shot "par" (a 54 in current DG slang) on our short course here in
Lincoln (<5000 feet), it's not that big of a deal. A "par" on a monster
course of 7000+ feet is a little more impressive.

I have to say that I did not feel at all deprived of golf. I love PDGA
Worlds and the large scale of that event has many plusses. It is inclusive
and large scale, generating its own gravity to draw media and attention by
weight of numbers, and the numbers also generate a big headline prize money
fund. It's a big family get together - nowhere else do you get so many great
golfers together.
The USDGC offers a different experience, players have more time to warm up,
socialise and watch each other play. The golf can be savoured. I think 4
rounds is enough to determine who is best on one course. I also think that
the course was well balanced to test all skills. I had feared that with 2
x1000ft plus holes I would be at a big disadvantage to the big arms, but
power was only rewarded if accompanied by accuracy.
To fit in extra rounds would change the experience unless the tournament was
to start on Tuesday rather than Thursday. As a player I would have had no
problem with that, but it would have been an extra burden on the staff,
particularly the volunteer staff. I was greatly impressed by the fact that
volunteers took precious annual leave to staff the tournament. Given that
the tournament is to be held at the same location for the next two years
there is a danger that we ask too great a sacrifice of time from those
individuals.
My thanks to Jonathan Poole, Harold Duvall, all at Innova, the volunteer
staff and especially Phil and Jennifer Demoeker for looking after me. I had
a great time. You guys did a fantastic job.

Ahh, yes, but then again you put in 18 holes on the pitch and putt. Perhaps
you were really craving 90 holes of golf and those extra 18 hit the spot
just so...

One round a day on this course was plenty. Four rounds was enough to let the
cream rise. Everything about this event was designed to allow players to
produce there best golf, and I believe many of them did. The level of play that
Kenny displayed was truly amazing. He played near perfect golf, and his margin
of victory is a testament to his dominance.
All players had the opportunity to play another round after stroke play was over
and I saw very few players taking advantage. After the rounds where over the
scene definitely took on a relaxed atmosphere which was a wonderful change of
pace. Players laid around the driving range watching Stokely throw trick shots
and Kenny and Greg H freestlye. Jonathan made a statement at the players
meeting that he wanted players to slow down and enjoy the time we got to spend
together. Well I believe his plan succeeded, this was truly a disc golf
vacation. I did not hear a single complaint about the format all weekend or
since I've been back.
As far as par goes, this course was the best example of an established par
greater than 54 that I've seen. The score card listed a 64 as par I believe the
true par by today's hole by hole standards was a 63. 2 par 5's where getting a
5 was a good thing, and 5 par 4's that where not easy 4's. All the par 4's were
around 600' and were skirted by OB so placement was at a premium. I didn't hear
of anyone carding a 2 on any of the par 4's. (Hole 9 was incorrectly reported
on the card as a par 4, the hole was only 385')
I believe all the players that attended felt like they were a part of something
special. This format will only grow and increase in popularity as more players
are exposed to it.
