the IBF Lightheavyweight championchip between champ Henry Maske and his
countryman Graziano Rocchigiani was more exiting, more competitive and
even much more brutal than anybody in the boxing world expected.
former SM champ Rocchigiani was waiting for his chance to fight against
his rival Maske for at least 5 years. now, as his skills began to rost and
he had his first defeat and his first draw of his career last year, he
finally became the chance to prove what he allways pretended: that he is
better than the german publics champion and clean gentleman Henry Maske.
nobody - except himself - saw many chances for Graziano, who's best time
was in 1988. but everybody - again except him - was wrong!
Graziano, being a bit smaller than Henry, used a great strategy to defeat
Maske and was able to make the champion look very very ordinary for the
whole fight.
he was holding his arms for the whole fight in front of his face, blocking
nearly every straight punch of Maske. it was really unbelievable.... Henry
was hitting allmost only the gloves of Rocchigiani, when he used his right
jab, which frustrated so many good boxers and didn't even find the head of
Rocchigiani with his right-left combinations. blocking in this way, Rocky
went foward and when he was in the half-distance or in the infight, he
used very good, very hard crosses and hooks and uppercuts AND .... I just
couldn't believe it... NEARLY KNOCKED OUT the champion - who seemed for me
up to now as some kind of invincable and not hittable. I saw Maske like I
(and everybody) never saw him: unsteady legs, stumbling and glassy eyes.
at least at three situations I thought he will fall to the canvas - I
really was crying inside my TV chair! it must have been the feeling, the
spectators of Tyson/Douglas had, when "invincable" Tyson went to the
canvas.
but ... although nothing what Henry did was effective, he was working much
more, changing his strategy from the straight punches (which never reached
their target - only Rocky's gloves) to throwing uppercuts and side hooks -
which looked quite static, but which were at least more effective. but...
nobody can have doubts anymore that Maske has a very very big heart.
HE WAS REALLY FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE!
I didn't score the bout round by round, but I would have given it a draw.
the official result was close but unanimouse. Henry Maske won with
something like 116:114... and is still the champ.
after the fight Henry was not able to speak into the microphone. his mouth
was bleeding and he nearly collapsed after the 12th round in the arms of
his trainer Manfred Wolke.
all my respects to Graziano, who proved that he still belongs to the best
lightheavy fighters of the world.
instead of it "The Question of Honour" is still not answered. today Rocky
announced, that he didn't accept the result of the fight. he was sure that
he won.
maybe there will be a rematch.
Fab.
