Although John Carroll's Katie Benjamin scored 18 points and collected
6 assists yesterday, she lost out to Shannon Moore by one point for team
and game scoring honors as the host Blue Streaks defeated Ohio Northern.
From today's PD, that story, plus a few other college notes:

Blue Streaks stop their losing streak

Sunday, January 28, 2001

By GEORGE SWEDA
PLAIN DEALER REPORTER

There hasn’t been much to smile about around the women’s basketball
program at John Carroll University lately.

The Blue Streaks had lost five straight games, seven in a row in the
Ohio Athletic Conference and were winless in 2001. Two of those losses
were overtime contests at home. And into overtime was exactly where JCU
went again yesterday afternoon in the Don Shula Sports Center with
struggling Ohio Northern University.

ONU, which had lost three straight and five of its last six, was just
what the Blue Streaks needed. They pulled off a 74-68 overtime victory
to go to 6-11 overall, 3-9 in the OAC. It was the Polar Bears who were
on the short end in JCU’s last conference win, a 67-61 contest on Dec.
16 in Ada.

"We’ve been playing very hard, we’ve just been making young mistakes,"
JCU coach Kristie Maravalli said. "In the last two overtimes that we
had, we just made some young mistakes. We hadn’t experienced playing in
overtime and I think playing in those two helped."

A young team, much like the Blue Streaks, ONU played with plenty of
emotion following Friday’s announcement that coach Kim Chandler would
not be rehired next season after leading the program for five-plus
seasons. The Polar Bears (5-13, 2-10 OAC) went on a 22-7 run after
trailing early, 15-10. JCU got just one field goal in the last 13
minutes of the half, shooting 31.8 percent, while ONU shot 48.1 percent.

"When you lose a few games, your confidence tends to be shaken and our
confidence was definitely shaken in the first half," Maravalli said.

In the end, it was better second-half shooting (50 percent for JCU to
27 percent for ONU) and better defense, plus JCU freshman Shannon Moore,
who stepped up to finally end the team’s losing streak.

Moore, a 5-5 freshman guard from Hinsdale, Ill., came off the bench to
score a game-high 19 points, matching her career high. She scored 16 of
those points in the second half, when JCU rallied from a 32-22 halftime
deficit, and in overtime.

"It was time for us to get a win because we needed our confidence
back," said Moore, who came in averaging 7.7 points per game.

The game was tied six times in the last 4:40 of regulation and once at
64 in OT. A Moore 3-pointer 2:30 into overtime put JCU ahead, 64-63.
Although ONU tied it, a streak of eight straight free throws, including
six by Katie Benjamin, sealed the victory.

Benjamin finished with 18 points.

Kelli Waggoner led ONU with 17, while teammate Allison Neuenschwander
added 15.
