This rig has seen little or no use prior to my ownership of it. I only
brought it up once with variac for a test run on 20 meters which it passed
in all modes. Original Carton, Manual and a rig so clean it looks and
smells like the box was just opened.

Subject: RCA AR88/CR88 Help

I just received what I think is a CR88 but I can't find anything
inside or outside indicating what model it is. Also, the round red and
silver RCA emblem is missing from the front panel (anyone know of one or
a reproduction?). There is no case...the front panel is black wrinkle
finish. It has an S meter and a small control in the lower right front
panel that is a crystal calibrator.
Does anyone know how to tell which model this is? Are there any
AR88/CR88 collectors or fans I could visit with to get some help? I
downloaded the CR88 manual from BAMA but mine doesn't match it. Anyone
have a manual covering the models with calibrators?
It looks like I may need the power/mode switch. Anyone have one
from a junker or know who I might contact? Thanks and 73.

Hello Ross, you will enjoy the Collins equipment .. on the 30L1 tubes ,you will
need to get tubes certified to work horizontaly, thats because the internal
elements supports are not strong enough to keep the elements from sagging and
shorting . I would be looking for military Jan 811 tubes ,they were designed
to work in aircraft equipment and all sorts of rough service.. good luck 73

Maybe so, maybe not. The original design specs for 811As provides for
vertical mounting base down, or horizontal with pins 1 and 4 in a vertical
plane (RCA TT-5). If the manufacturer built to those same specs, then the
30L1 is designed for the latter case. I think Svetlana meets most RCA
specs, and I know of several 30L1s using Svetlana tubes. What brand is your
source selling? I have been told that the 572B is a rugged replacement for
the 811A, and is another type to consider.

A friend and I are installing a VHF Marine radio in his 1989 5th wheel.
He's placed a Shakespeare 5206-C antenna on a 15' pole. The camper is
already wired for cable TV, which he would like to use for this application.
. I know some of the cable run is RG-59, but am not sure if all of it is.
The antenna came with RG-8 or RG-58 (the smaller diameter of the two). Can
we mix and match these cables? Will the RG-59
work OK for these marine frequencies? Generally speaking, is cable TV cable
appropriate?
For this application? What cables (types) are appropriate to use
in this application? If this is an inappropriate news group to ask theses
questions, please
suggest another. Thanks.

You should use the RG-58 all the way. Unlicensed use of a marine radio
is not appropriate for a trailer unless the trailer is floating on a
barge. If you want to talk from the campsite to a boat, you need to
check with the FCC to see what kind of license you need or use a
different service.

Subject: WHAT ARE THESE TUBES???????

A pulse triode used in radar modulators and similar applications. Used to
switch a very high voltage (20-30 kV) and moderate currents (tens of amps)
at a low duty cycle. Used to drive a magnetron.

These kind of tubes are often poor performers as modern ham amp tubes, as
they are usually quite non-linear. They might be better suited to class C
amplifiers. I have heard that this type of tube is very good for a tesla
coil driver, if you are into that sorta stuff.

I have a pair of ITT F-7030 pulse radar tubes (clipper diodes) sitting on a
shelf in my shack. With the heavy finned copper anode radiators, they make
great bookends!

I'm wondering what would be a good performing boat anchor receiver for

The only tube receiver I ever owned was a Hammurland HQ-110, and I loved it
but it needed a lot of work so I got rid of it.

Would like to hear comments from some of you more experienced folks out

Thanks for advance notice of this important event. Personally, I find the idea
of "new" vintage gear fascinating. Will the lucky buyer (who probably has paid
a premium for the privilege) actually use the NOS equipment or store it away as
a rare museum piece? Or will they use it once and then re-sell it?

Hey, you could have Geraldo Riveria open it on a live webcast. Or maybe promote
it like the WWF, you know, "Ranger I Smackdown" and have the bidders fight over
it in a wrestling ring on Pay-Per-View. Or you could have 10 people stranded
on a desert island try and outlast each other for a chance at having one QSO
using it. (Just call the show "Ranger").

Anyway, for those of us in the peanut gallery, I say get your side bets down.
I predict the final selling price will be around $1,100.

This list will prove beneficial to anyone who is interested in the
collection,
restoration, and operation of vintage radio equipment. While this list will
deal mainly with American-made amateur radio receivers and transmitters,
other makes are welcome so long as they fit the category of "vintage". To
qualify for vintage status a set must be 25 years old and preferably
contain some vacuum tubes. This category can include military, home
broadcast sets, commercial equipment and homebrew equipment. Any homebrew
equipment using vacuum tubes and operating CW or AM will be considered
"vintage" equipment no matter what the age. Accessories such as keys,
antenna tuners, watt meters, test equipment, etc. is also considered a part
of the Vintage hobby and will be welcome if it is at least 25 years old.

I sincerely hope that you will join our group of vintage enthusiasts. With
your help we can make this a great List.

I'm assuming that you are not looking for perfection, so virtually any of
the old receivers that had a Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) for copying CW
will do a creditable job of copying SSB. It just takes getting used to
tunning both the VFO and BFO when you change from one side band to the
other.

I used an old Hallicrafters S40B with a Heathkit Q multiplier and was able
to copy SSB. .

The Hammarlund HQ-180( ) is a nice one, although I don't like the audio, at
all. Any of the general coverage HQ-series would do nicely, from the HQ-140,
145, 150, and the 160 (The 170 is ham bands only). Any of the Hallicrafters
will do OK, too.. such as the S-85, SX-99, and the SX-100. One has to watch
the prices, however, especially on Ebay. I would recommend going to a hamfest
so you can see and touch what you're buying (and hopefully get to smoke test
it). There are many many more very good receivers, but all too many are
fetching high prices these days. Look around and bide your time..the right one
will pop up in good time!!

To properly demodulate SSB a product detector and not a BFO is much
more desirable. Stability is also a good assit.

You didn't mention if your wanting general coverage or ham bands only.
For Ham only, the SX-111 Hallicrafters was a decent receiver. Had
selectable filters and a product detector.

In the Hammarlund the HQ-180 is a general coverage jobber.

And the HQ-150 has a Q-multiplier that can be used as a remarkable noise
filter for SSB.

Hi All,

I have radio I am working on with small, enclosed, switched phone jacks that
are full of green corrosion that is resulting in bad connections across the
switch contacts. The jacks are enclosed and cannot be disassembled and
there is too much crud in there for Deoxidit 5 to take care of. Anybody
know of a chemical bath I can immerse these jacks in to desolve the
corrossion? I have removed them from the radio so immersion is possible.

I picked up ("rescued") two converters that some FC has removed

First, Tapetone XC - 144, 28-30 MHz IF. The FC didn't realize
that the LO tube and one LO Xtal are inside, so those are there,
but the other tubes (including 417A RF Amp) are missing.

The second one is a Centimeg 432 converter, looks like 10 mtr IF.
No tubes or LO Xtal.
Both are very clean inside, the FC didn't know how to open them up
I guess !!
Interesting pieces from the 60's hey-day of VHF/UHF activity.
I'll pack and ship both for $24 to anyone in CONUS.

It has scene where at a British Intellegance listening post where they are

I believe the receivers used are Racal RA-17 or RA-117. Does anyone agree
or does anyone have any other information on the receiver model.?

I also believe the same model receivers were used in the listening post

I think you're right, they are RA-17's.
Also, I believe in "Diamonds are Forever", Blofeld (sp?) had a Philips
L6X38T large 'transoceanic' style transistor portable on his desk.
Finally, I remember in one of the movies where Bond was on an oil rig (I
think), one of the receivers in the radio room was a Panasonic RF4900.

It's sick to pay attention to the radios when you should be staring at the
T&A, isn't it?

I have that same problem, (although there is ample time to look at both). At
least the bond movies make a reasonable attempt to display accurate
equipment...some movies will try to pass off a stack of CB's or even
non-radio stuff as a complex monitoring post (not that I'm knocking CB,
radio is radio).

I'm afraid I have plead guilty as well.

The hero or heroine is 'homing in' on the villain by carefully turning a dial
and you suddenly realize they are twiddling the front of a BC221 Frequency
Meter! Kind of spoils it for me. I do recall the stage show of South Pacific, in
London, back in the 1950s had a realistic looking radio set up that swung out
onto the stage at the appropriate moment; it definitely included an HRO
receiver, but I couldn't tell the model from the balcony!

About 30 years ago visited one of those NORAD (North American Air Defence) holes
in the ground centres at North Bay Canada..
While there we ( a group of telecommunications managers) were advised that
certain 'old' (circa 1950s etc.) equipment was being replaced by more modern
equipment; in particular some computer racks, full of tubes/valves and some big
screen radar plotter monitors.
When we asked what they would do with such 'old style' equipment the answer was
immediate.
"Oh; no problem. Film studios will always take this old stuff for 'space' and
sci-fi movies!".
So space movie buffs; be alert! "OK; Boat Anchors to Enterprise. Beam this up."

In the 70s, on Hawaii 5-0, McGarrett was forever talking into his
personal police radio during chases, or key moments in a sting, or
when the Governor called to check in with the latest interference du
jour. I was somewhat less than amused to see him talking into a
Shure 527B noise cancelling microphone run into a Masterwork
AM/FM/Shortwave portable T/O clone.

Yes, it was more than a bit distracting.

I traded a 1956 Collins 212F Broadcast console to my equipment
supplier in exchange for some processing hardware. He called me and
told me it had been sold...to Hollywood. I was amused to see it in
Howard Stern's movie.

And then realized that my equipment had gone farther in my career
than I had.

Used to work on that stuff. Yeah man. 9001 front ends, crank tuning. We might
see one of those in the morning and an ARC-73 in the afternoon. The transmitter
was right out of the ARRL pubs, though.

Nowadays the stuff we sweated over is UNDER the tables at flea markets. Sic

Hello, I have some excellent 6146A tubes for sale, most look in like-new
condition but some are used.
They have lost their boxes over the years, I must have at least a dozen around
here.

All will be tested for transconductance on a TV-7 or 600A Hickok tester.
Most are GE, Sylvania and RCA...I think I can make up decent pairs too.
I will supply the test readings if interested.

He has the dates correct. In fact, some even arrive before Wednesday.
By Thursday many of the bargains are gone.

Think of it as sort of the "Woodstock" of ham radio. Woodstock... as in
New York.

It's not just a hamfest, it's a "happening".

You really should go. You won't be disappointed.

Well, once, anyway. After several years it all begins to blend together.
It's officially only Saturday and Sunday, but the dealers will have snatched
up all the bargains by Friday. I think they should clamp down on that.
And 2nd largest???? I don't think so. But it is big.

I agree completely, I've been going to Shelby since 1970.
Missed the last 3 years because of conflicting schedule
with the AWA Conference in Rochester.

I had to drive 1 1/2 hours there this morning to reserve some
flea market spaces just so we could be inside the fair grounds
when we arrive at 6AM Saturday morning. When I got there at
10:15AM there were ALREADY dealers set up and open for
business and all of the prime spaces were already reserved.

If you do go, be sure to stop by and say hello.
We'll be set up on the center row, straight out from
the restrooms in the grass. Look for the CC-AWA banner.

It's quite tight in some spots under the chassis,
especially in the RF box. A good spotlight will come in handy
to get light into the tight corners under the bandswitch. Don't
pass up changing the wax caps in the Rf box, several are AVC line
bypasses and almost certainly need changing.

Several of the IF trimmer caps have B+ on them, use an insulated
tool or great care.

You may find a few cracked trimmer caps near the bandswitch, they're a bit
vulnerable as they're almost flugh with the bottom. Be sure you have a
clean
benchtop when you set the radio down or you might crack some trimmers.

George

I can second everything George has said. Good luck finding the dial lock;
most seem to be missing for some reason, if the number of "Dial Lock Wanted"
ads on the boatanchors NG is any indication.

You *can* replace those caps in the RF section, but it takes a lot of
patience, a set of long hemostats, and a soldering gun with a long tip you
can bend into position.

The IF alignment is pretty tricky. Get the manual and FOLLOW IT TO THE
LETTER. If you don't, the selectivy positions will not track right and one
position will have full gain and the other two relatively dead.

The front panel is pretty easy to restore. Pull it off, clean it with
Westley's, and buff with a light coat of paste wax. If any of the engraved
labeling needs to be re-painted, you'll have to do 'em all since
Hallicrafters used a strange shade of grayish silverish white. It's really
easy to do, however.

Every one I've worked on (at least 12) has had a screwed up or broken dial
cord for the band indicator arrows. As long as you have the front panel
off, lubricate all the bearings and gears. THis will make for much smoother
operation. Re-stringing the dial cord will exercise your four-letter word
vocabulary.

The wrinkle finish cabinet can be cleaned quite well with a stiff toothbrush
and some diluted Westley's. Take it in the shower or bathtub, wet it down,
then go at it with the Westley's. Rinse it really good. The stainless
steel trim panels shine up well with Brasso.

Be careful of the lettering on the knobs. Too much rubbing or too much
abrasive will take the lettering right off. Brasso works but DON'T use too
much pressure.

The "h" bandswitch is prone to breakage. Be VERY careful to lube the
bandswitch bearings, detents, and contacts well so as to reduce the
necessary torque on the knob.

I've had a bunch with busted glass in them also. No biggie, just cut a pice
the right size and glue it in with Liquid Nails.

Electrically, these radios are really robust. Other than the usual suspects
(bypass caps and resistors over 500K), the only thing you're almost
guaranteed to have to replace is the S-meter adjust pot. It's a wirewound
bastard of about 5 watts that likes to open up completely. If yours just
has a bad spot (usually right where you need it for zeroing the meter), put
a 1K resistor in parallel with it, this will change the operating point to a
clean spot on the pot.

Enjoy it, it's a great radio.

The lettering on the knobs is intact, but . . . .after a previous owner
stripped the paint off the front panel (down to bare metal), he gave the
panel *and* the knobs a nice thick coat of varnish, which has darkened with
age. Maybe it was supposed to be a 1960's look -- the seller said it was
like that when he got it from a buddy in the late 1960s. No problem to strip
and repaint the panel, but I doubt that I can remove the varnish on the
knobs without also removing all their lettering. I suppose if I use the set
long enough, the varnish on the knobs will wear away and look almost
original again :-)

The S-meter on mine is not very responsive (OK, almost totally
unresponsive), although the radio receives well on all bands. I'm not going
to worry about that a whole lot until I finish recapping and checking
suspect resistors. I did make a quick check of the S-meter adjust pot and it
is working within the 0-500K range. B+ voltage is also in the right
ballpark.

Thx again for all the advice. No question, those caps in the RF section are
nasty to reach!

hehe; I've also been in that particular "hole" in North Bay, only in the
early eighties. Oddly enough, they were going through a similar retrofit at
the time to thier computers.

Actually, none of the Government departments can sell to any entity
directly. In the Federal Governents case, these items are sold through a
department called "Crown Assets" (unless the name has been changed in the
last few years). Items are grouped into lots and categorized, interested
parties can then make bids on them in sealed auctions, although some items
are occaisionally displayed in a public auction. This still makes that
fellows comments accurate enough; I'm sure Hollywood and the like are on the
mailing list for some of that stuff.

Cheers!

Subject: Speaker Coil Question

Terry, generally PM (permanent magnet) speakers, up to 12" are 4 or 8 ohms
(sometimes 16). If there's a transformer mounted on the speaker frame,
its probably a 600-to-8 ohms type (a la Hallicrafters R-46). Try hooking
it up and see if the volume level is good (not having toi run it up all the
way) and no distortion. If its not good, you'll have to do an impedance
transform. Radio shack has a small 8 to 600 ohm transformer and any of the
small, modern military "LS" type speakers have such a transformer, inside.
All else failing, a small 6.3 volt filamant transformer will do nicely (6.3
side is the 8 ohm side).

Subject: Speaker Coil Question

Terry,

Try it on the radio. Set the volume up only part way. If the sound is very
weak then the speaker is low resistance. Confirm this with an ohmmeter, if
the speaker is low resistance it should be 2-4 ohms, or if it is high
resistance 400-600. There are speakers around that are other values. If the
speaker IS low resistance you can either salvage an output transformer from
an old, defunct 5 tube table radio or get a line to voice coil transformer
from Radio Shack. Wire the output of the transformer to the voice coil of
the speaker and the input of the transformer to your radio's audio output.

Translation:
"Hi; I'd like to pick it up but the battery in my station wagon is flat, I
think the alternator is shot! and I'd fix it but my buddies have borrowed
all my wrenches." (Trunk = Boot; Hood = Bonnet etc.)

Who was it said "We are separated by one common language"!

Anyway 'Vive la difference' as the French say. May our 'common' language
continue to grow and develop and become more colourful (oops, sorry
colorful!). Personally and I know this is 'off topic' tbut here is nothing
better or more descriptive than a terse expressive Americanism or an
ingenious British play on the meaning of a word or expression.
e.g. "Play ball". "Get stuck in". "Right on". "Too true". "Nuts". "Not on".
............... .etc. etc.

Keep those tubes (sorry, valves) glowing chaps.

I would try a hardware store. Not a big chain like Lowe's or Home Depot,
but a smaller "Mom 'n Pop" type store. I think those are either #4 or #6
screws. Take the plug along with you and test-fit as necessary.

Haliicrafters model HT-37 SSB/CW/AM transmitter from the early 1960's in
good condition. All tubes check ok. 6146 finals and some caps were
changed recently and it's getting full output on all bands. Front panel
is very good. There are only a few spots on the outer cabinet that you
might want to touch up. No dents, dings, etc. Comes with a copy of the
manual. The only problem to report is that it is not working on LSB. I
have a picture available. It is heavy and will be expensive to ship; so
local pickup is preferred in the Albany, NY area. Price $265

Phil = the S meter on a properly working '28 should be very responsive, You
have a problem somewhere. IIRC, without looking at the schematic, the
Smeter measures plate current on one of the RF tubes, or perhaps plate
current on one of the IFs. Regardless, check the voltages on all the tubes.
You probably have a bad cap or bad resistor somewhere.

Terry: I'm not sure about this but I believe if you measure a very low DC
speaker resistance, that means the speaker coil has very few turns and
therefore very low inductance. This means that that the 'impedance', which
in any circuit is a complex quantity taking into account; resistance,
inductance and (but not in this case) capacitance, will be almost entirely
the DC resistance alone.

So if you measure two or three ohms DC, say, I think you can assume the
speaker has an impedance of around 4 ohms.

To match 4 ohms to 600 ohms you could use a transformer with a ratio based
on the square root of 600/4 = 150. i.e.around 12 to 1. I think if you used
an impedance matching 'pad' you would lose too much power in the pad.

If the speaker measures higher; possibly one of those old ones, that maybe
doesn't even have a permanent magnet but is energised by a magnet coil;
then it may have what is today a non standard impedance other than 4 or 8
ohms.

Anyone wishing to correct or comment on this please do so.

========================================

Generally, a 12.6-volt filament transformer will provide a decent match
in this application. The approximate 10:1 turns ratio will match 600
ohms to 6 ohms - close enough for either a 4 or 8 ohm speaker to work
well. Apply the 600-ohm output to the 120-volt primary of the
transformer and connect the 12.6-volt winding to the speaker voice coil.
A one-amp transformer is sufficient.

Right- basically use whatever you can come up with that works. After all,
an 8 ohm speaker can be 8 ohms only at one frequency, and unless youi plan
on listening to one tone only it won't stay there.

Everyone, please forgive me if this is a well worn topic. I just joined
the list and am pretty much of a novice at , to coin a word, boatanchoring.

I have been told the best Collins is the 390, the best Hallicrafters the
SX-28, Hammalund and Racal???. But this may be way off the mark.

So if this isn't asking too much, I'd to find out the top 2 or 3 boatanchor
receivers from each major company.

Also I'd like to know if there are any swap meets, ham fests, etc. in the
Southern Calif area so that I can see and purchase one of these great old rigs.

the Collins S-Line series all top runners, Drake B-C line as well if on a
budget. Had them all, Hali, National, Hammarlund, Racal. They are all somewhat
fair to good but the Collins beats them all. That is why they are so up there

I think we have left out one of the best!! That being the ITT MacKay
3010C receiver. This general covers receiver will run circles around a
R-390 and 51J4, I know since I have both of them. This radio is one of
the sleepers out in the market place. Designed for marine service it has
one of the best sensitivity rating going, that being .11 UV. most radio
are .15 and up. IM distortion and 2nd and 3rd order products just don't
exist. The AM audio is fantastic and SSB reception is wonderful. Under
the hood we have , what else, 2 collins mechanical filters, same ones as
used in the 75A-4 another great radio! And of course each his own! When
it comes time to pick it up and take it to the beach or park, well my
Sony ICF-6800W or CRF-1 radio is the best.. Enjoy!!!!

Talking of sleepers - the Racal RA17L takes some beating. Prices here in the
UK (depending on source and condition) up to £200 - or $350.
Performance? I was getting a fair signal on a homebrew antenna (100m solid
core wire wrapped around a 1.5" diameter 8' long pole) on Radio Australia -
in London!

Collins: R-390 (not "A"), R-391, 651S-1
National: HRO-500, HRO-60, HRO-50
Hallicrafters: SX-73, SX-88, SX28
Hammarlund: HQ-180, PRO-310, SP-400
Drake: R-4/C, 2A/B/C, 1A
TMC: GPR90/91/92

My criteria in the above list is build quality, audio quality, ease of
service, electronic performance (sensistivity, stability, etc), usability,
and looks (not necessarily in that order).

The 51J/75A series has horrible audio and crummy front end performance. The
51S-1 isn't a lot better.

Any non-HRO National is definitely a step down performance-wise from the HRO
series.

I think the SX-88 is vastly over rated - nothing much more than a bigassed
SX-100 with a bit better stability. The SX-28 is there because it is, bar
none, the best looking receiver ever. Performance is adequate by today's
standards but doesn't begin to come close to the rest of the receivers on
this list.

The HQ-180 is a good performer, but it's not very attractive. My favorite
looks-wise and performance-wise is is the SP-400 (love that variable IF
bandwidth)

Any Drake is a good bet, as is any TMC GPR-series radio.

Looking forward to the flames!

I have a Harris RF-590, as well as a Harris RF-550. The 550 has an RF
amplifier that the 590 doesn't and is more sensitive. However if you
want real sensitivity, a Sylvania R1414/URR beats anything that I've
used. The noise figure runs about 7 dB, a good 8 dB better than
Harris. The Sylvania is solid state, analog tuned (no synthesizer
noise) and has four tuned circuits before the first mixer.

Well, "best" is one of those highly charged terms that folks are not likely
to agree about. I suspect you'll get a wide range of answers to this
question.

The SX-28 is a fine set and might win in the "best beloved Hallicrafters"
category, but I doubt it would beat my SX-88 in a head-to-head (should that
be dial-to-dial?) performance challenge. The SX-42 is another fine
Hallicrafters receiver, a few years newer than the SX-28 and with FM
capability to boot.

This is a pretty subjective topic. If you want fine overall reception plus
juicy push-pull audio stage, then any of those three receivers will fill the
bill, and the average slob would be hard-pressed to notice big performance
differences. Of the three, the SX-42 is comparatively plentiful and usually
not expensive. The SX-88 is scarce and thus very expensive. None of them is
an easy receiver to overhaul (cramped layout).

It depends a LOT on what you're looking for . . .

The MACKAY 3010C?????!!!!

If I remember my model numbers correctly, that's the Mackay receiver
with the two color "tape" dial.

In fact that tape dial was a nightmare in heavy use with sprocket hole
wear and inaccuracy.

Also, that front end tube (frame grid?) was fragile as hell.
Any lightning strike within a half mile or so would take it out,
as would the RF from any nearby transmitter. In commercial useage,
I had to bypass that front end stage several times due to running out
of spare tubes.

Seems to me that overload resistance or dynamic range was also
poor. If that receiver was anywhere near a 50KW AM bcst station,
forget it.

I used these receivers at sea as a Ship's Radio Officer and was
never impressed. Whenever my ship docked in the Port of New York
area, those 50kw transmitters in the New Jersey meadowlands made the
receiver useless. The only impressive thng about this receiver was
its heavy, cast chassis construction.

The later Mackay receivers such as the solid state 3020, 3030 and
3040's were, and are, very impressive. They solved the front end
overload problem with a built in tunable preselector/filter.

Just my $.02

Of course!

3579.545 is always good, in darkpath and winter. Folks have tended
to have drifted down to 3578, because of 1AW skeds, and that is fine.
Anywhere in the ballpark or the bandwidth of yer tin cans will do.

The generic most recently agreed upon Boatanchors and Glowbugs CW

3578khz 0300Z

although some show up anytime on the above QRG's. In winter we mostly
inhabit 3578 and 1803, which is prime Hartley/regen territory. Folks show
up usually on bugs or on straight sendin' irons running everything from
1920`s Hartleys to anything what glows in the dark. If ye can`t muster

The original reason was the commonality of 3579R545 rocks for the
glowbug gear. In summer the band can be hectic there with the hash,
but, in winter, it really does not bother a good setup. Many of
the folks who have hash problems (mebbie chuck the poor junk tv stuff
and get the XYL a good set?) have moved down to 3578R0 which is fine.
The rest of us inhabit 3579R545 and keep on truckin'. Funny, tho,
the hash doesn't bother my really ancient gear like Hartleys and
regens. Mebbie it is the too modern ham gear with the RF stages
run too wide open for real Boatanchoring or Glowbugging use?.....(:+}}...

That is the classic RCA high powered xtal oscillator set.

Several of the BA/GB folks have built them and run them. They work
just fine. Be very, very careful around the high voltages used, and
always key by relay. The lamp in the xtal line prevents xtal burnout,
but even then, don't use tiny xtals but good healthy sized ones (such
as FT-171 or R1 sizes) if you can.

I built one a few years (decades!) ago. Bought it while on R&R in Tokyo. I
thought I'd test the radio out in the hotel, and was I surprised; not only was
it a kit, but the instructions were all in Japanese. It took only a couple of
nights work to build on a vacant bench in our avionics shop, though.

Alignment is straightforward, really. If the set is on frequency, all you need
do is peak the high end antenna and RF stage caps on the CB or ten meter band
and the coil on the low end. It make take a couple of iterations to get this in
there,. And be wary of peaking on images; with a 455 KHz IF you will hear CB
images around 28 MHz.

Thanks for the tips!

Actually, I'm surprised regarding your comments about this being a kit. If
so, mine was built extremely well with nary a cold solder joint in site! I
also learned that the company that actually produced these was called Trio,
or at least some of them were marketed with this name on them.

Let 'em be, unless they're bad

Definitely let'em be. I've yet to see one of these go bad.

Believe it's 100 ohm. Wouldn't worry about leakage; the run is so short
it's not gonna matter a bit. We're dealing with fairly high level signals
at this point in the radio. I *think* there's a trap in there somewhere
after the first converter to get rid of the 6 mc bleedthru. Find it and
adjust for min bleethru.

> 4. Any suggestions as to a "hotter" tube to put in the 1st RF stage?

Leave it as is. It should be sensitive enough. If it isn't, then you have
bad bypass caps or an alignment problem.

> 5. Is "No-oxid" really that great of stuff to use?

I use "De-Oxit".
