There is a _lot_ we can do on a mobile device using the power of Windows!

It's actually surprisingly shocking how much power Windows has on Android:
o From Windows, how can we open a command line on the Android filesystem?

Look at this picture I just uploaded for you of my USB connections:
o <

Notice there is an iOS device, an iPod, an Android device, & others.
o From Windows, I slide files to/from any of those devices to/from Windows
Here's a screenshot I posted yesterday for another copy thread:

Most file copies are done from Windows/Linux - not from the device
o Where Windows/Linux can "see" the entire device visible file system
The key difference is that the "visible" file system is greater for Android
o And, for iOS devices, the "visible" file system is greater using Linux
And, for Apple products, it's usually one-way (by default)
o Although, for me, it's bidirectional read & write for both iOS & iPod
But that's because I know the tricks to make iOS & iPod fully read/write
o Which, interestingly, almost no Apple users ever seem to know. :)
Sometimes I "push" the files over the Wi-Fi LAN from the device though.
o For that, I set up a third-party SMB server on Android or iOS

I agree it's trivial to copy files to/from Android to/from Windows/Linux:
o How do you copy photos over USB from Android to Windows?

As you noted, for some tasks, even ancient FTP works well for file copies.
o FTP can even be used to "mount" the device as a Windows drive letter.
Which means, from Windows, you can make shortcuts to do neat copying stuff.

You'd think SMB would work better with Windows, but there are limits:
o What's the best way to forward SMB TCP port 445 to something higher than 1024 on Windows?

o Do you know of a free Android SMBv2 (or SMBv3) client?

o How can I modify a Windows shortcut to mount as a specified drive letter?
<
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.comp.freeware/6pwyTqYAhE0>
o Does freeware exist on Windows that will mount (as a drive letter) Android connected via USB as MTP?

o KDE Connect is a keeper for sending & receiving files over your Wi-Fi LAN to/from any desktop to/from any Android phone!

o Does anyone have libmtp freeware currently working on Linux or Windows who can show us how to COPY files to/from unrooted Android over USB using libmtp?

o Why would SMB seem to be more reliable than WebDav or FTP or KDEConnect, etc., for Wi-Fi "network connections" between Android & Windows?

That seems like a usable system.
o For me, the only PITA is how long Windows takes to enumerate many photos.
I should set up a freeware Wi-Fi LAN based _automatic_ photo copy.
o I just haven't attacked that problem set in earnest yet.

Linux works quite well, and not only with Android.
o Linux turns the entire visible file system of iOS devices read/write!

In fact, Linux works best with iOS - far better than does even Windows:
o Simultaneously slide Windows Linux iOS Android files back and forth over USB at 7GB per minute speeds using 100% native devices (no proprietary software needed)

Understood. When I say "automatic", I mean local to my own LAN only.
I _never_ want to put anything on the net that I don't have to!
o Do people of reasonable technical ability store their private data on the Internet (if so, for what gain?)

I'm confused whose "file manager" you're speaking about in that sentence:
a. Do you try to see Windows' file system from Android? (which you can do)
b. Do you try to see Android's file system from Windows? (it's the default)
Which direction are you _trying_ to see the other device from?
A. From Android?
B. From Windows?
o When you plug in your phone to usb on your computer, does your file system mount on Windows 10?

The entire Android filesys can be "mounted" as a drive letter on Windows.
