Miniature Basset Hounds?

Is there such thing as miniature basset hounds? My husband really likes
the way basset hounds look, but we need a smaller dog for our
apartment/duplex. I saw a dog featured on our local news station's pet
corner for the Human Society. It was a hound mix, but looked like a
small basset hound.

I know you guys are probably into pure breeds, but does anyone know if
there are two breeds that can be mixed to "produce" a small basset hound
type dog?

Thanks!

a standard sized basset should do wonderfully in an apartment.

if you want a small dog, get a toy breed... if you want a bassett get a
bassett.

there are plenty of both at the pound/recues too.. you can always get an adult
whose size & temperament is already known

No...it would be very not good for the resulting pups, as the dwarfism that
makes Bassets Bassets and not Foxhounds (or coonhounds, or whatever they
would be otherwise) combined with the small genes of a toy breed could
quickly cause more problems than I care to imagine.

If you like Bassets but want/need something smaller, try one of the French
basset breeds (non-AKC registered, unless you want a PBGV) or a Beagle.

the mix I have seen like this was the beagle crossed with the basset - not
so pronounced dwarfism in the dog I saw but all hound and smaller in weight
and length than a pure basset

There is no such thing as a miniature basset, but as you have discovered
there are many, many mixed dogs who might suite you. Also a full size
basset though large is usually great for apartments --- not high energy.
Check out www.petfinder.org and do a search for the breed and your
choice of gender. I just ran a search there for any Basset and it came
up with 215 dogs all needing homes. Even if the entry says just basset
look at the description and picture as many are mixes. I saw a darling
purebred named Emma in Lodi, CA, an adorable Beagle cross puppy in IA,
many loving looking seniors that are probably already housetrained, and
lots of adults. There is an really cute Llasa Apso Basset cross in
there that looks like a PBGV but they said (I think I remember) was only
20 lbs and full grown. With 215 dogs I surely hope you can find one to
suite you within traveling distance. Good Luck.

Because it's not part of the basic ISO character set and may not pass
correctly through some mail servers, may not appear in people's
mailreaders or may be interpreted as a bunch of code/characters that
make the meaning hard to understand.

When I READ a post with the ASCII "cent" symbol it comes out like this:
"Just my 2? worth." Oddly when I respond it magically transforms the
? into ¢ - Anyway, $ is a symbol that will render properly in all
readers, everywhere while the cent symbol will not.

True, that's the problem with using the extended ASCII character
set. Different platforms and systems handle it differently. I
thought trn was one of the newsreaders that did, though (from
what I've seen on some of the technical ngs).

This was a smart ass JOKE !!

I thought most of you knew me well enough for that. And with the <EG>
being an <Evil Grin> I then thought ppl would take it that way.
I have NEVER been so deluged with e-mail, from ppl I don't even know,
telling me they don't have this key on their keyboard, and that's why they
don't use it.

FWIW This is the MOST e-mail I've ever received, about anything I've
said. LOL I was being my regular smart-assed self, and I got so many ppl
pissed. Heh.

There were a few, asking me how to do it, nicely, and a few also, from
regulars explaining why they can't, (as others' puters can't pick it up,
which I already knew <G>), but man, oh, man. I touched a nerve there, I
guess. <chuckle>

I have no apology to anyone that was offended. If you were, it's on you,
not me, I put the obligatory <EG> in there, and am well known for being who
I am, a little smart ass. If you are really *that* upset, you could have
asked nicely rather than yelling at me. <G>

I will now leave you to your regular postings, and will NEVER be a smart
ass again.......

No, that's the termcap not trn which controls the display, and quite
correct, I do not adjust it to take the 8 bit character set, since
it's nonstandard. When keyboards with the cent character start coming
out, then I'll use it :*).

By that time, inflation will have made the dollar the smallest
denomination, and we won't need the cent character.

Well, the closest I've seen is a puppy that our rescue group placed last
spring. Ralphie's mom was a min pin (I saw her, and she was on the large
side, about 10 pounds), and his dad was a basset. Slightly longer legs than a
basset, and slightly smaller, ears, but the face was all hound. I'd love to
see how he looks as an adult, because based upon his puppy features he would
look like a very small basset. I wouldn't adovocate such a breeding, but keep
checking with local rescue groups to see what interesting mixes they have -
you never know what will turn up next week.

First off, apologies to the OP, as this was not about her post, I forgot
to put in the 'OT' designating an off topic post. I try to remember
but......
Anyway, I had a g/f in Ca. years ago. they had adopted from the shelter
a dog that was most likely a GSD/Basset and she was a sweetie. I think you'd
be better looking in the shelters for what you have described here. :)

All the best,

Hehehehehehehehe I had my finger crossed as I typed that. <G

(And yes, some ppl were very nasty about it. Which really surprised me.
It wasn't the ones asking or joking, it was the ones I got where ppl were
really, sincerely mad.)

Ahhhhh but I did say I got some from the regs here, and one of those
were from you, along with a few others, explaining things, and being very
nice, and polite.

Your e-mail was just fine, very polite, and informative, as usual, for
you. :))) You are ALWAYS welcome to e-mail me instead of posting.
As was Karen's. I don't want you to think you were being considered with
the nasty ones. :)))

I should just put together a collage of the e-mails I got......I know, I
know. I usually will post nasty e-mails I get if the debate had been going
on here, but won't with this, but it was just too funny to me. :)
My hub was reading them too, and we were both on the floor. <G> Too
funny.

So now, due to my leetle loverly tampon boy, everyone knows how to use
the ¢ sign. Shoot, I'd been zingin that one in for years now, and no one has
bothered about it. <G> Then post that it's a pet peeve, (which it isn't AT
ALL), I get this. <chuckle>

I'm off to find something else to piss ppl off, I felt very important
this ayem turning on my puter and seeing all this mail !! And I knew it
wasn't spam, as that all goes into a different folder.

Oh well....

Someone else who does this. Over the years I've gotten better at checking
