This has probably been asked in R.P.D. before, but i'm interested in some
of the unusual/amusing/interesting names owners have chosen for their
"babies".
I have a 'tiel named "Miko", and in reading some of the postings in this
group, it seems that there are a lot of birds named "Charlie". Or maybe
I read a lot of articles posted by the same person...

Let's see, five tiels: Merlot, Chablis, Beaujolais, Chenin, and Fume;
CAG: Kenya; YCM: Froggy.
Froggy was named by the breeder who raised him. His mother tore off his
upper beak when he was hatching, and the breeder hand-fed him. After a
while, he feathered out (green) and with his little, flat face, she
thought he looked like a frog. :) Several people suggested changing his
name, but I think it still fits somehow. Besides, he loves to yell, "Hi
Froggy! Hi Frogs!" at his toys while he beats them up. :)
Several of my tiels' babies have retained the names I gave to them.
Still out there are Shiraz, Pinot, Riesling, and Mouvedre. My first
tiel's name was Chardonnay.
An acquaintance of mine was seriously considering naming her budgies
Comet (green one) and Ajax (blue one) after the colour of the cleaner
containers!

I (my parents) has a 'tiel named charlie (not that original really). I know
there's at least my charlie, and one more charlie on this ng. A few weeks ago I
got a new tiel that I at first called spiff (after calvin's alter ego in calvin
& hobbes), but as I talked to him, I suddenly started calling him Rusken
(meaning nothing really), and he seemed to love it, so I renamed him to Rusken.
At least I think that is a bit weird name for a bird.

We gave our Moluccan Cheerion with milk for over a year, until he lost
interest. He and the other birds do eat Cheerios on occasion.
One caution: Rosemary Low in "Cockatoos in Vaiculture"writes about a
bird that was given human dried cereals plus fruits and veggies as a
total diet. The bird died because of teh excessive amount of iron in
the cereal. The moral here is to feed Cheerios, and other human
cereals, in moderation.

My son's first cockatiels (left them in Puerto Rico) were "Feathers"
and "Cherry".
He has decided to name the new bird "Azrael, Angel of Darkness".
(He used to have hamsters when he was 5 which he named "Scratchy"
and "Sniffy", it didn't occur to me for several weeks that we owned
"Scratch and Sniff" hamsters)
I am thinking of buying a mated pair (maybe) and if I do I think
I will name them "Tooth" and "Claw" . . .

Someone asked for funny and different bird names, so here are mine:
The first two budgies were Samson and Delilah (for the Grateful Dead song
of that name). Then Delilah died and there was just Samson. I replaced
Delilah so Samson wouldn't be lonely, but as we couldn't tell if the new
bird was a she or a he, it went nameless for a few months (I was hoping
for a girl so she could just be a Delilah too). Turns out Delilah the
second is a boy, so he remained nameless for nearly a year before my
boyfriend took pitty and named him John Denver (where did that come
from?). Now it's just Sam and J.D. for short :-)
My baby Yellow Nape's name is Puck. No, not like "hockey puck" as many
people seem to ask, but Puck the mischevious fairy in A Midsummer Night's
Dream. No he doesn't quote Shakespeare, but we're working on it! Puck
was named by a highly scientific poll of all my friends who have email;
Puck got the most votes so Puck it is. So far he hasn't learned to say
*uck instead of Puck so hopefully the name will be a good choice!

I have two tiels. The male is named "wolf" (as in wolf whistle) and a female
named shy (obvious name) . Both are literally wild tiels.. they r totally
untrainable or tameable.. Let's give a example.. The vet last time I was there
spent 5 minutes chasing them around their cage then his office. plus if anyone
even puts a hand in their cage they r lival to be bit hard.. I have often
thought of adding a hand raised hand fed tiel... but am almost afraid to. My
male tiel could also have easily been named devil (his crest feathers make him
look like he has horns on his head :) ) so there r three names there for u

Hitchcock (Moluccan): adopted him with the name and hated it. But didn't

Dusky (Dusky conure): because we're totally unimaginative.
Hobbes (Severe macaw): I wanted to name him Hobson (Guilgud in "Arthur")
and my wife wanted to name him Hobbes (Calvin and....). So we compromised
and named him Hobbes. Ain't it always the way.
Chicken (Festive amazon): has a problem with an air sac valve so his chest
puffs up and he looks like, well, a chicken. It was that or Dolly Parton,
but he was born (1970) before she ever left Kentucky.
Budgies: Bud and Gee, Stumpy (one foot), Lumpy (fatty tumor), Sally
Spielbird (used to belong to Steven Speilberg), John and Yoko.
'Tiels: Sweetie (because she is), Dennis (because he never walks, he's a
real Hopper), Arnie (names for Schwarzenneger as he is the most intrepid),
C.S. (afraid of everything) and O.G. (4 of the 5 are Lutinos and this one
looks a little like the others but has not even the subtlest
distinguisging marks, so he's the "Other Guy").

We have a Quaker named "Groucho" because she looks like Groucho Marx
strutting around with his hands behind his back, cigar in his mouth,
besides, Groucho (birdie) is a real smart mouth, so it suits her.

A Citron Cockatoo, named Miss Magnolia Kaye because she was born in
Mississippi and acts like a real southern belle. She rustles (like
she's wearing petticoats) when she walks and she's so pretty and

My older male cockatiel was named Charlie by my great aunt who let him fly wild
in her apartment for his first ten years. Now, as my aunt died a while back,
he lives with Cinna (a male cinnamon) in a comfortable cage and he is quite the
changed bird. Names for my birds didn't get very interesting until I brought
home my new baby last week--an Amazon Blue Front who I have decided to name
Tenar after a LeGuin character....just my two thoughts.

My Senegal and Red Belly get a few tablespoons of Cheerios or Rice Krispies once
or twice a week. They love the Cheerios so much that i'm also able to use them
as treats while training the birds. A half Cheerio (or a whole Cheerio for a
larger bird) is tasty, has a fun shape and consistency, and won't grab too much
of a bird's attention during a training session. Healthier than peanuts too, i
hope.
I've learned to not let my birds eat Lucky Charms out of my bowl, though. Like
children, the birds quickly figure out that they prefer the marshmallow pieces
to the cereal, then they get bored by Cheerios for a time.

These weren't my birds, but when I was working in the pet store, we
were given a pair of 'tiels who seemed to have some kind of infection, and
the vet was ruling out salmonella. So they're named Sam and Ella. (As an
interesting side note, you can always tell when these two are mating
because Sam whistles the Andy Griffith theme during sex!)
My birds are named Kira (sun conure--Kira means Sun in Persian) and Amber
(senegal) for the color of his eyes.
Hey Gloria--did Mark tell you who Rudy and Gomez are named for (you can
probably guess Gomez, but Rudy is a little tougher!)?

My Hahns Macaw is 'Augie' We have Corgis smo my wife named him Augie
Doggie so he'd 'fit in'.
Had a Timneh named OZ Was a shortened version of ostrich because he'd
always try and hide his head when being petted.

My birds are named Briseis (bri SEE iss) and Curly. The most beautiful
woman mentioned in the Iliad, outside of Helen, of course; was the princess
known as "Briseis of the Fair Cheeks." When I bought a Green-cheeked
Conure, naturally I would assume she was female and name her "Briseis of the
Green Cheeks." Curly is a Bare-eyed Cockatoo, and a natural clown if ever
there was one, so I named him after my favorite natural clown of the cinema,
Curly Howard from the Three Stooges.
I had lots of other names I was thinking about, but which my ex-wife vetoed
for various reasons. "Gremlin" was too spooky, but I almost got her to
accept "Scarbo," a little whirligig of a french demon popularized by Ravel
in his immortal "Gaspard de la Nuit." I also desperately wanted to name him
"Onan" because he was always spilling his seed on the ground (the biblically
illiterate should consult Genesis 38 for a good laugh).

I just bought a "used" cockatiel. (my first bird) His name was BABY
(UCK!!) So I decided to give him another name. When he first saw one of
my ferrets, he squaked and fanned all he feathers out. Put his wings up
and out and stuck his crest up full height. His name .......Raptor..bird
of prey.
BTW. I don't let the ferrets near the bird anymore, but he loves to
torment the cats!

I've named my English budgies after composers, the one I have now is
Nickolai Rimski-Korsokov, Nicki or Kolya for short. My mother's English is
Eric Satie, Satie for short (though weve started calling him silly, fatso,
and clod -- he's crippled). My last english was Amadeus, Amie for short.
We've had other budgies (american) too. They were Skeve (named for a
character from Robert Asprin's Myth series, we also called him "the evil one"),
Beaker (like the muppet), Fluff (as in marshmallow), Irene (named for the woman
Sherlock Holmes fell in love with and allowed to escape)
And of course Flotsom and Jetsom two Society Finches.

One of mine is Onan The Destroyer, aka as Terminator. Onan is pretty
clear if you know the Bible; as for the rest of it, he's a Quaker
Conure..
The other bird is Chico, short for Chicolino which is what "@" is in
Italian. I don't know how to say Green @ in Italian.
Another gray cheek was Ollie, for Oliver Twist or Olive Oyl, if she were
female. Alas.

Pickles: Male Quaker parakeet, for obvious reasons.
Loki: Male Congo African Grey. Named after Norse god of mischief.
Nikki: Female Congo African Grey. I don't know why we named her that.
Katy MacCaw: Female B&G Macaw, one of the Scottish MacCaw family.
QuickDraw MacCaw: Male B&G Macaw.
Sampson: Male Hyacinth macaw. We didn't name him. I guess his
partner will be Delilah (sp?).
Lola: Female Greenwing macaw. My wife said "What Lola wants, Lola
gets".
Glide: Male Caninde macaw. We didn't name him. The breeder lived in
Houston when he hatched and was a basketball fan. Need I say more.
Dawny: Female Caninde macaw. So we could have Dawny and Glide.
Mindy: Female Yellow Collared macaw.
Mork: Male Yellow Collared macaw.
Sigmund: Male Senegal parrot. Was originally named Seneca until we
had him sexed.
Cricket: Male Maroon-bellied conure. Because he sounds like one.
Wahoo: Female Blue Crowned conure. She made a noise that sounded
like "Wahoo" a lot when we first got her.
Timmy Timneh: Male Timneh African Grey.
Turee: Female Timneh African Grey, named by Pickles.
Egon: Male Hahn's macaw.
Janine: Female Hahn's macaw. So we could have Egon and Janine (for
you Ghostbusters fans).
Simon: Male Moluccan cockatoo. Named by breeder.
Moon Angel: Femal Moluccan cockatoo. Named by previous owner.
George: Male Green-rumped parrolet
Gracie: Female Green-rumped parrolet
I think that's it, for now.

Cheerios are also great to use as a starter weaning food for baby chicks. It's
like a toy that's also good to eat. :-) As for Lucky Charms, or any other
sweetened cereal, they shouldn't be fed at all. Sugar has been known to totally
shut down a bird's digestive system -- which may result in death. Remember that
what you think is a tiny bit may be a large amount for a bird, especially
depending upon the size of the bird. IMO, there are too many healthy,
unsweetened cereals to risk a health problem with one that contains sugar.
