Conures, okay to have round budgies?

Hi -

I am seriously thinking of buying a conure. I have one question that
my conure books don't seem to address - are they okay to be in the
same room (not the same cage) as budgies? I have 6 budgies right now,
and I wondered if they can live peacefully with each other. When they
have play time, is it okay for the conure to play outside the cage
with budgies? They close to the same size (okay, okay, long wise, a
conure is more 'chunky'.) Or, should I have play time with each
species out at a time. (I have 6 budgies, 2 tiels, and 1 pious.) I am
not so concerened with the tiels and pious because they are in a
different bird room. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Regards,

Bentley

P.S. Exactly how loud are conures? I live on a horse farm way out so I
don't have to worry about noise. I just wondered how loud they really
are.

Two points - first, it depends on the birds. second, it can be dangerous even if
they seem to get along in your presence.

My budgie, green cheek, and macaw are out of their cages most of the time. Our
sun conure prefers to remain in her cage. They don't play together, but seem to
accept each other within their own limitations. The budgie is flighted and
spends most of the day on/in the macaw cage. If she gets too close, the macaw
will bat her away. I know it wouldn't take much for that "bat her away" to turn
into a quick bite and no more budgie. They've been together seven years. The
GCC is more aggressive toward the budgie, but she keeps a greater distance from
the GCC.

You could have both but I doubt they would ever be able to interact, it is
possible but I would not hold out much hope. The (I know I am going to spell
this wrong so someone help me out here) Aratingae <sp?> breed can be pretty
loud. I don't mind our Blue Crown, he is noisy but does not bother me except
for that full blown Conure scream. "Noise" is kind of a relative term,
different people have different ideas about it. You should probably try to
visit someplace that has them first and see what you think before you buy
one.
You have to remember even the smaller Green Cheeks are bigger than
Buggies, and could do some very serious harm to them if they are allowed
together, so be careful.

You don't seem to even know what a conure is.

How loud are they? It depends on species, individual personality, and
envirnment. They range from practically mute to ear piercing scream
machines.

conures come in various sizes from budgie sized (almost) to big buggers. The
bigger ones are usually aratinga's and they are very very very loud.
I have several in my living room and I have to wear headphones if I want to
hear the television.
I think you are thinking of the pyrrhura conures like the green cheeked and
maroon bellied.
Hand reared they do make nice pets, but might bully your budgies.
However if they all live in the same room in seperate cages, they might be
fine flying together eventually. I have several different species which
happily fly together.
One tip though. If you let one cage full of birds out, let them all out or
someone will lose toes if it lands on a cage with a bird in!!

A lot depends on the particular bird...I have a GCC and he's fearless.
He's tried to bully a catalina macaw and a goffin cockatoo. I wouldn't
suggest letting the conure out with the budgies. They are very quick
and it doesn't take very long to rip off a beak or bite off a toe...
Just my $0.02.

As far as noise, there are a couple times a day when Kermit likes to
be heard =) However compared to being around a goffin it doesn't seem
like Kermit is very loud at all. I think it just all depends on the
species of conure and individual personality of the bird.

Good luck!

I have Green Cheek Conure, Cocketeil, and Budgie. They have their own
bedroom. Can go in an out of the cage as they wish. All get along very well.
GCC is male and dominant, but accepts and runs herd over the other two
female birds. He preens the cocketeil (can be affectionate and aggressive
with her), and when he sleeps in the cage the Budgie cuddles up against him
at night. That doesn't mean he doesn't bully both of them, but he also
accepts them as his family.

I have four conures (non-breeding pair of blue-crowns and Mitred) and have
fostered a sun, nanday, and Jenday conures. While I am not a conure expert,
I have noticed that my conures are individually picky about who they spend
time with. I have a lovebird that has bonded with a blue-crown but I don't
dare get the lovebird near either Mitred or the other blue-crown.

The Mitred, and Blue-Crowned are large birds while the sun, Jenday and
Nanday are smaller. I would recommend more caution with the larger conures.

As for the noise, my experience has been, "the smaller the conure, the
higher the pitch". The nanday and jenday that I fostered could shatter glass
with their calls but I got used to it after a while as long as they didn't
call out near my ears!

Good Luck
