Hi all,

I don't know if anyone else is having trouble with Google Earth and
Windows 8 but I sure was. Long story short I found a workaround.
Apparently Windows 8 and Google haven't straightened out their
problems when I tried to bring it up in your web browser (Internet
Explorer) so you can go to

http://support.google.com/earth/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=168344

and click on Google Earth (free version) Direct Installer Links.
Choose version 7.0.2 for either Windows or Mac
It will install a standalone Google Earth independently from your web
browser and it's pretty slick.

The stand alone version is the only version I've ever used.

I didn't even know there was a browser version of GE.

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.

Well, I use Google as my homepage and when you click on "Maps" the
page that comes up in the upper right-hand corner gives you a choice
of "Satellite" or "Earth". If you click on earth for the first time It
asks you to download the program "Google Earth" and when you do
supposedly you should be able to open "Google Earth" but using
Internet Explorer all of a sudden it's not working at least with
Windows 8. So the workaround I found (which I pointed out in my
original post) is you can download it without going through your web
browser which I'll admit I didn't know until I did it. I now have it
attached to my taskbar just like any other program and I don't have to
go through my web browser. This was all new to me but if the subject
comes up again I can tell everybody I knew it all along ;-).

Windows 8 uses IE 10. There are two versions of IE 10 on Windows 8; one for
the Metro apps and one for the desktop. You can force Windows 8 to always
use the desktop version of IE10. I've forgotten how to do it, but a search
should turn up the instructions.

Also, if a web page doesn't display right in IE 10, click on the
compatibility mode button. It looks like a piece of paper with a horizontal
tear in it.

Another option in IE 10 is to hit "F12" which will allow you to set the
particular website back to an earlier version of IE, if desired, without
putting it into compatibilty mode.

Only if changing from IE 10 to a previous version changes it.
