LaVern Baker records four tracks this day at the Atlantic studio in
New York City. The forthcoming single "Play It Fair"/"That Lucky Old
Sun" (Atlantic 1075, September) is the main result of the session
which also produces "You Better Stop" (first released on "All Star
Rock And Roll" Atlantic EP 575 in 1957) and "Fee Fee Fi Fo Fum"
(Atlantic 1093 1956)..Personnel: Emmett Berry, Shad Collins (trumpets)
Lawrence Brown (trombone) ; Sam Taylor (tenor sax) ; Dave McRae

Another Little Walter session in Chicago. All three tracks are held in
the can for some considerable time. "Crazy For My Baby" is released on
Checker 986 in mid-1961. "Little Girl, Little Girl" and "Can't Stop
Loving You" see their first release on a French LP (Le Roi Du Blues LP
2012) in 1989.Personnel : Little Walter (vocals, harmonica) ; Robert
Lockwood Jr and David Myers (guitars) ; Willie Dixon (bass) ; Fred
Below (drums).Willie Dixon's "Walking the Blues" (Checker 822, his
only R&B chart entry) may also have been recorded at this session, as
the master number (7873) immediately precedes those of the three
Little Walter tracks. It was belatedly released in the UK on London
HLU 8297 (July 1956) and is considered to be the rarest London single.
After Little Walter has left,Bo Diddley enters the Chess studio.
"Pretty Thing"/"Bring It To Jerome" is selected for single release in
November (Checker 827). The instrumental "Spanish Guitar" is first
issued on the album "Have Guitar, Will Travel" (Checker LP 2974) in
1959 and "Heart-O-Matic Love" stays on the shelf until the CD age
(first release on Chess CHD-9331 in 1991). The date given in
Leadbitter / Slaven's "Blues Records, 1943 To 1970" (August

Funnyman Stan Freberg presents a new, weekly, comedy program on
CBS. Freberg is a late entry into the radio program race, though he
was well known for many famous radio commercials over the years. The
Freberg show only lasts a short time and "tele-vee-shun"is blamed for
the show's quick demise.
Justin Tubb continues sessions at Bradley Studio in Nashville to
record the twelve tracks for his forthcoming LP "Country Boy In Love"
(Decca DL 8644, November). This day he cuts "Try Me One More
Time", "I'd Trade All My Tomorrows" and "Silver Dew On the Bluegrass".

September 1998 and is also included on the CD "West Texas Bop" (Ace
CDCHD 699) in 1999. "Look To The Future" is only available on the
bootleg 4-CD Vigotone Buddy Holly box-set ("What You've Been
A-Missing", 1999). There may have been some involvement of Niki
Sullivan (producer?), who wrote "Look To the Future".Musicians : Gary
Tollett (vocals / acoustic guitar) ; Buddy Holly (lead guitar) ; Joe B
Mauldin or George Atwood (bass) ; Jerry Allison (drums) ;Ramona
Tollett (backing vocal). Additional backing vocals by the Picks are

Dean Martin covers Domenico Modugno's "Volare" (aka "Nel Blu Di
Pinto Di Blu"), which has not even entered the US charts yet. Martin's
version, which will peak at # 12, is rush released on Capitol 4028.

Mercury hits on a new idea this day by releasing promo film clips of
The Platters and the Diamonds to local TV stations thus pioneering
some of the first music videos
Elsewhere Johnny Cash makes it official that he is leaving Sun Records
in Memphis
Meanwhile at that same Sun Records Charlie Rich has his SIXTH session
for the label this day at 706 Union Ave Memphis Tennessee. Just as was
the case for EVERY TRACK from his previous five sessions NOTHING
from this session is released at the time. "My Baby Done Left Me"
finally surfaces on the " LP set "Charlie Rich: Original Hits and
Midnight Demos" (UK Charly CDX-10) in 1985."I'll Make It All Up To
You" goes unissued whilst "Those Places Around Town" sees light of day
on DA 300
The Champs record "The Toast" for their second LP, "Everybody's
