From the brochure that comes with the Sinopoli Blu-Ray of Parsifal:

The result is a new kind of orchestral balance, an extraordinary
veiled limpidity that sets this score apart from all the others, and
which makes the sonority an integral part of the music, as the French
Wagnerians Chabrier, Duparc, d'Indy and Fauré discovered when they
leapt on the vocal score, played the Prelude on the piano and were
mystified to find only "Massenet, bad Massenet!" - a judgement they
rapidly revised.
