Hi- I have just been looking through boxes of reel to reel tapes that I got
from a deceased collector about 3 years ago. There are lots of interesting
performances.

I came upon a Tosca from Pasadena, Ca., March 2, 1968. Corelli, Curtin, Rayson.
The conductor is Allen Jensen.

I certainly know Curtin and Ben Rayson, but I had never heard this performance
before. All I can say is that they go crazy for Corelli in California as much
as they did in NY and Italy, and everywhere else. The sound is excellent, and I
will be transferring it to CD.

Is there anyone out there who may recall this performance. I think there were
two performances with this cast.

Thank you, Ancona. Do you know anything about the reviews? Curtin is not a
Tosca voice, but she was a fine artist. I saw her do a Tosca with Tucker with
Met in the Park in the early 70's.

I attended one of those Pasadena TOSCAs. It was the same year, probably the
same month, in which Corelli sang his only Verdi REQUIEM in Los Angeles,
Mehta conducting, Gwyneth Jones the soprano. I don't remember much about the
TOSCA, and even less about the Requiem, only that Corelli was loud and that
Curtin was too light-voiced for my taste. I do remember that she ducked the
low C in "Ioquellaama glipiantai nel cor," taking the last note up an
octave.

The last note of that phrase is actually written up the octave...the low chest
tone usually inserted is a 'tradition', and one I rather like. Ducking the high
C is not!

Thanks for the report on the Tosca. I have the Corelli Requiem on CD, but
thought the year was 1969, not 1968. I'm sure you're right, however. I imagine
he did not sing very often in Los Angeles- at least not in opera.

Kirsten also would frequently "duck" the low C in that 2 octave line. I believe
there is an option written for the soprano in the score.

What about mucking it? Or mucking it up? I have heard that happen on many
occassions. It is such an exposed note, with absolutely no orchestration.

I was there. Corelli was fantastic...far more than his other Toscas.
